25827 | Re: Doughty/Duke/Bell Kim (View posts) Posted: 25 Apr 2006 5:02AM GMT Classification: Query Surnames: Doughty/Bell/Whiting/Bird So, perhaps it was kind of a joke between friends then? Sounds like it. The letter was so cordial and kindly. You believe it was your Samuel who wrote it then? The will I have not seen. It is on jhafner's site? Yes, you must be referring to the census I just spoke of, racking my brain trying to remember things. No, John and Mary had no child named Samuel; their children were John Jr, Raymond, Burt and Maude. Mary M. Whiting was married before to Jackson Bell. They had 4 children: Lowell Bell, AC (Cordaro?) Bell, Rena Bell, Eugene Bell (1st white child born in Colorado. Eugene's middle name was St. Vrain after the river he was born by. He was quite a guy. Somehow, the Bell marriage ended after Eugene was born. Jackson Bell ended up in Washington and remarried (?) Bird, having 2 daughters together. Mary married John not long after their split. We wonder if they met each other in Ohio. Anyway, there was no Samuel in their families, together or combined so the Samuel on the census is a mystery. However, there were some mistakes on that census if I remember correctly. As to the date of death, I will recheck what I do have...I have no memory of where I got that date...at the time, I must've had it in front of me...could've been a typing/reading error on my part. | Bell, Gene (I45266)

However, I do have some information about a Jabez Whiting . I have not verified any of this yet but it should be fairly reliable. It comes from a family history collected by my great-aunt. According to her records, the Jabez Whiting Whiting in our family was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England England on 4 April 1790. His father was Peacock Whiting and his mother was Elizabeth Hall. He emigrated to the United States, arriving in Philadelphia Philadelphia PA on 20 June 1817. He married Betsey Betsey T. Ambler on 24 August 1837. He died on 17 April 1878.
