| 20803 | May be the Benj Fairbanks listed on page 206 of 1790 Massachusetts census living at Sharon, Massachusetts. There is none listed at Wrentham. If so, the household consisted of 2 adult males and 2 adult females (adult=>16), and if this assumption is correct, there would be a Benj junior also, as one is listed in Sharon in the 1790 census with 1 adult male, 1 juvenile male and 1 adult female. Also in macDougall genealogy webfile wga11.html which gives 15 May as birthdate. May be the Benj Fairbanks listed on page 206 of 1790 Massachusetts census living at Sharon, Massachusetts. | 20804 | May be the Joseph P. Fairbanks mentioned in Midwest Pioneers: Michigan Business Directory, 1863: INTERNAL IMPROVEMENTS. page 46 The St. Mary's river is a strait connecting the waters of Lake Superior with Lake Huron. Nearly opposite the village of "Sault Ste. Marie," a fall or rapid occurs in the river, about seventeen feet in its descent and about one mile in length, forming a complete barrier to the water communication between the lakes. This barrier had been overcome, a few years ago, in some degree, by the construction of a portage flat bar railroad around the rapids, over which all article of exchange and commerce between the lower lakes and Lake Superior were transported, and re-shipped in both directions. The growing interest of the Lake Superior region, the development and production of copper and iron ores, and the increasing population, demanded a more easy and natural commercial communication with the lower lakes; and the State of Michigan, by an act of its legislature, approved February 5, 1853, accepted the grant of and made by congress, above mentioned, and, for the purpose of carrying out the objects of the said act of congress, authorized the governor to appoint commissioners to let the building of the canal, and agents to select the lands. The commissioners appointed by the governor, under authority of the act of the legislature of Michigan aforesaid, and an act supplementary thereto, approved February 5, 1853, entered into contract with Joseph P. Fairbanks, Erastus Corning and others, for the building of the canal within two years from the date of the contract, for the consideration of the grant of lands above referred to. This contract was subsequently duly assigned, under authority of the tenth section of the first above mentioned act of the legislature of Michigan, to The St. Mary's Ship Canal Company, which had been incorporated under an act of the legislature of the State of New York, passed April 12, 1853. The organization of the company was effected on the 14th day of May, 1853, in the city of New York, and steps were immediately taken to proceed with the work of building the canal. Another entry: PONTIAC. page 443 Among the first white inhabitants who made Pontiac their home, were Major Joseph Todd, William Lister, Orison Allen, Olmsted Chamberlain, Ezra Baldwin, John Smith, John W. Hunter, David Johnson, Oliver Torry, David Ferguson, Zibba Swan, John Hamilton, Amasa Bagley, Levi Willets, Joseph Fairbanks, William Morris, Samuel Castle, Joseph Almy, Asa Castle, David Stannard, and Charles Howard. | Fairbanks, Joseph (I1395)

| 20813 | Memoir of Rev. Samuel Whiting, D.D., and of His Wife, Elizabeth St. John ... By William Whiting ========================= Step # 1: We start off with a focused goal. In this case study, the question, or focused goal, was to identify the parents of Maxfield Whiting who married Lettice Johnson in 1753. Step # 2: Conduct a broad search of time, location, and associates. In this case study, Maxfield and Martha Whiting were witnesses of a will of an associate. According to Tom, two witnesses with the same last name are almost always related; however I’m not sure I agree with that 110%. In this case, it turned out to be a correct assumption. Step # 3: Understand the documents and the motivation behind why they were created; follow their creation process through to the finish, especially when dealing with probate, court, and land records; In this case study, we examined 7 distinct documents and wrote our analysis and findings down in our research journals: 1779 court document of Mr Fitzhugh, Maxfield Whiting’s landlord which included a deposition of Maxfield Whiting himself in which he said he was 50 years of age, putting his date of birth around late 1720s, early 1730s Church record stating marriage of Maxfield Whiting to Lettice Johnson, Feb 3, 1753 – Tom Jones said that most males in VA at this time married in their early 20s, making Maxfield’s date of birth about 1730 An associate’s will written 1757 which Maxfield Whiting and Martha Whiting both witnessed – Tom Jones says they are probably related 1731 Petition of Martha Whiting to use property given her by her father, Maxfield Brown; says she has small children and her husband William Whiting left her – Maxfield Whiting could fit in easily as one of these small children The will of Maxfield Brown listing daughter by the name of Martha Whiting Marriage record of Martha Whiting to Daniel Fendleston, 1755 Letter from Maxfield Whiting naming his daughter Martha Whiting – indicates similar naming pattern after his mother, Martha Whiting Step 4: After all the documents are understood and analyzed, they must then be correlated. The will of Maxfield Brown above correlates the 1731 petition of Martha Whiting to the court in which she said her father was Maxfield Brown. In the same token, conflicting documents must also be resolved. Can you see what is conflicting in the documents above? The 1757 will lists Martha Whiting as the witness along with her son Maxfield Whiting. However Martha Whiting had already remarried to Daniel Fendleston in 1755. How do we resolve this? Tom Jones suggests that the clerk made an error in the will because he knew both Martha and Maxfield Whiting and probably knew of their relationship and simply wrote both their names as Whiting. Neither of them could probably read or write their own names, so they just placed their marks. It is possible the clerk was not even aware Martha had remarried. I am not sure how I feel about this conclusion, but the rest of the evidence seems to correlate. That leaves us to the next step. http://genealogybyginger.blogspot.com/2011/06/inferential-genealogy-course-in-second.html ============================= | Whiting, Maxfield (I5223)

| 20848 | Millard never married and lived with his mother until her death. He hadbeen a veteran of World War I. Millard was issued Serial Number 218,Order No. 25 and was ordered to report to Columbus Barracks, Ohio on orabout September 30, 1918. Millard owned a gas station in Hillman, Michigan and he was arrested formaking and selling moonshine in the garage in the early 1930's. ThePermanent Injunction dated April 27, 1931 was authorized by theHonorable, Arthur J Tuttle, United States District Judge for the EasternDistrict of Michigan. The Injunction reads in part: '.... we, therefore,in consideration thereof, and of the particular matters in said Bill setforth, do strictly command you the said Millard Wright and LeonardMcConnaughey defendants, and the persons before mentioned, that you doabsolutely desist and refrain from using or maintaining, or assisting inusing or maintaining, the said premises described in said Bill as placewhere intoxicating liquor is manufactured, sold, kept or bartered inviolation of the said National Prohibition Act, which said premises aredescribed as follows: A one-story frame building, used as afilling-station with a garage in the rear of the lot, located on the mainstreet in Hillman, Michigan, the sign over the door reading 'auto livery'and another sign with the name "Millard Wright" also over the door, aremore particularly described as follows: The North one-half of Lot 2,Block 3, Village of Hillman, Montmorency County, Michigan." Millard walked with a shuffling limp and the last several years of hislife walked with two canes. He is remembered by his nephews as being akind, gentle man who always wore a hat the tie when invited over fordinner. His obituary reads: " HILLMAN - Funeral service for Millard Wright will be at 1:30 Sunday atthe home of his brother, Forrest, and at 2 at the Hillman MethodistChurch, the Rev. Ward Preston officiating. Interment in Hillman Cemetery. His death occurred Thursday morning at Alpena hospital where he had beenentered Saturday, death culminating a three-month illness. He was born July 11, 1889, in Mio. He was a veteran of World War I andhad been an auto mechanic prior to his retirement. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Clara Tewell, St Petersburg, Fla., andMrs. James Allen, Alpena airport; three brothers, Floyd and Forrest,HIllman, and Owen, Pontiac and several nieces and nephews. The body was taken to the Forrest Wright home this afternoon from theConnor funeral home, Alpena." The following article was written by Mrs. C. Domby about Millard afterhis death: "MILLARD WRIGHT - A LOSS TO THE COMMUNITY --- Frequently I am asked, "If you know something nice about our departedcitizen, why not let others know?" Most of the articles I have alreadywritten, were handed down by my father. However, the one I am about torelate was an actual experience. Today the folks are saying, "We have lost Millard Wright". Lost is theproper word in this case for I can hardly picture Hillman without Millard. IF the good Book says we are all Brothers and Sisters, the late Mrs.Andrew Wright, Millard's mother, was one woman I knew, who put thoseworks into practice. I am inclined to believe that a child's firstimpression is everlasting, otherwise we would have forgotten our firstmeeting with a fine woman. Is was Spring, so three young members of our family, equipped with cattail torches and shoes tied around our necks traveled Southward towardthe horizon for the pot of gold. Hours later, we turned towards home whenthe Heavens opened up. The rain lashed out, while the lightning keptshowing up the damage it had already done. Threes were stretched acrossthe road. Terrified, we huddled near a fallen tree and couldn't believeit was a real voice we heard. There was a lady we had never seen beforeextending her hand. She took us into her house where we faced a largefamily. She gave us dry clothes, a hot supper and had one of her olderboys drive us home, so as to bring relief to our parents. After we grewup, all three members agreed that on that memorable night we had foundthe pot of gold. But is wasn't a hard, glittering substance - it was awoman's voice - that of Mrs. Andrew Wright. She would be pleased to knowher son, Millard with his limited strength was just as kind andconsiderate of his home town folks. It was two years ago when we watched him daily with the aid of two canesmake his way to the door of his good friend, the late Thomas Lakeoffering his services. Who, I ask could offer more? I never spoke to Millard but what he wasn't thinking of the welfare ofhis fellowmen. Most of all he wanted a home in Hillman for men who areleft alone. A place where they could be together, in fire side fishing orlumbering. He wasn't thinking of himself; it was for the much older men.So son, like mother leaves a message. For people like them make this amuch better world to live in. Yes, lost is the word." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sources Title: Oscoda Co, Michigan - Vital Records Media: Microfilm Page: bk1pg13#148 Birth Rec Funeral Card. | Wright, Millard Edwin (I10957)
