      Born in Medfield, Mass., May 27, 1822. At the age of eleven years he was deprived of his father by death, and went to live with his sister, Mrs. Milton Holden, of North Groton, N. H. There he worked on a farm and received his education. Afterward he became a teacher in Hebron Academy. He went to Natick in 1845, and engaged in shoe-making. He was postmaster of Natick from 1862 to 1866; was elected to the Legislature in 1874, and served two years. He has held many town offices, and has always been interested in politics; was a personal friend of Hon. Henry Wilson.

      He married, July 4, 1843, Caroline Cummings, of North Groton, N. H., who was born Apr. 10, 1824, and died, in Natick, Feb. 6, 1891. She was a daughter of Henry and Sarah (Cheney) Cummings.
