26751 The Deacon Joseph Mygatt was a merchant, a worthy and pious man. Elected to many offices in the town of Hartford. Like a son to the Rev. Thomas Hooker, Joseph Mygatt took the concerns of Rev. Hooker as his own. His home was on a hill, Trinity College stands in it's location now. He was known to be honest in his dealings with his fellow settlers and with the native people.

notes

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griffin_(ship)_

Griffin was the name of a 17th-century ship known to have sailed between England and English settlements in Massachusetts. Several historical and genealogical references show the Griffin making such journeys in 1633 and 1634. The 1633 journey left at Downs, England and landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts on September 3. This 1633 journey carried religious dissidents, including Thomas Hooker,[1] John Cotton, and others totaling 200 people. The ship Griffin weighed in at 300 tons and she saw the birth of at least one child, Seaborn Cotton, during the 1633 voyage.[2] In 1634 the Griffin carried Anne Hutchinson to the Massachusetts colony. Huthcinson's oldest son had preceded her the previous year, also on the Griffin.

This biography may be longer than some in the past issues have been, but then it covers more years. Ellis and Cora Murdock are the oldest couple attending Second Church.
Ellis was born in Clitherall, Minnesota and baptized there at the age of eight. Cora was born in Freeborn, Minnesota of Danish Parentage. Her family moved to Clitherall in 1915, where she met Ellis and was baptized in the church in 1917. The story of her conversion was printed in the "Stepping Stones", September 3, 1950. They were married April 27, 1917 by Lester Whiting, Ellis's uncle (who later moved to Independence and also attended Second Church). Cora and Ellis moved to Independence in 1919 and lived on West South Avenue when the street was not yet paved.
Their five children, Orison, Fae, Alva, Matie and June were all born within a three block radius of Second Church. They attended Second Church from 1919 until 1933. Ellis was called to the office of Deacon in 1922 by Arthur Allen, the third pastor of Second Church. After their first son was born, they lived in Lamoni for one year while Ellis attended Graceland College (he had attended before in 1915 at what was called the Academy-equivalent to high school). While Ellis attended Graceland, Cora cooked and kept house for their landlord to pay the rent.
During the depression they lived on a farm in the Ozarks, then moved back to the family farm at Clitherall, Minnesota in 1936. While attending the Clitherall branch, Ellis was called to the office of Priest by Lester Whiting in 1936. In 1943 they sold the farm and again returned to Missouri, Odessa for two years and then back to Independence in 1945. They moved into the house at 403 South Avenue where they are still living. In 1952, Howard Timm, then pastor of Second Church, called Ellis to the office of Elder.
Cora has worked continuously in the Primary Department since 1945. She started baking the sacrament bread in 1957 when Chris Hartshorn was pastor, and is still doing this for us.
Although they were never "rich" by world standards, they helped all five of their children attain a college degree. Three attended Graceland.
Ellis has been a farmer, where his greatest joy was trading horses. He never farmed with a tractor. He also has been a horse and/or truck delivery driver, but his most enjoyable job was in the mail room at the Auditorium for fifteen years, from where he retired in 1968.
All of her children will testify that Cora was a hardworking, kind and understanding mother. She loves cats and could milk a cow, ride a horse or bicycle with the best of them. When she was sixty years old, she was still demonstrating to her grandchildren how to ride a bicycle.
Ellis and Cora have attended Second Church for a total of 47 years, under 22 of the 24 pastors. This surely must set a record.

ETHAN ELLIS WHITING, an intellegent and enterprising citizen of the town of Waupun, who is now engaged in farming and stock-raising on section 10,is a native of the Empire State. He was born in Erie County on the 25thof January, 1845, and is a son of Warren and Lorinda (Keith) Whiting. When he was a babe of two years, his parents left their Eastern home and emigrated to the Territory of Wisconsin, locating in Fond du Lac County. His boyhood days were spent in much the same manner as those of other farmer lads, and he was reared to manhood under the parental roof. In the common schools of the county he acquired his primary education, which he completed at Hillsdale College, Michigan, pursuing his studies duringthe winter term, while in the summer months he assisted in the labors ofthe farm.

On ariving at years of maturity, Mr. Whiting chose for himself a helpmate in the person of Miss Julia Towne, and on the 23rd of October, 1867, their marriage was celebrated. The lady was a native of Catttarugus County, N. Y. , born Feb. 11, 1842, and four children, one son and three daughters, graced their union: They are Walter F., Wilhelmina, Nellia W.and Ida C., all of whom are yet at home. In 1879 Mr. Whiting was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife, a most estimable lady, and a member of the Free-will Baptist Church, who died on the 26th of June of that year. On the 17th of November, 1880, he was again married, his second union being with Miss Ella F. Grennell, who was born in this county July20, 1856. They have two interesting children, Ethel M. and Arthur E.

At the time of his first marriage, Mr. Whiting located upon the farmwhere he still makes his home. It comprises 181 acres of land, which hehas placed under a high state of cultivation. Diligence and industry arenumbered among his chief characteristics and he labors assiduously in theinterest of his home and family. In connection with general farming, heengages quite extensively in stock-raising and also owns and operates adairy. He has been very successful in that line of business and welldeserves a liberal share of the public patronage. Religously, Mr.Whiting is a member of the Free-will Baptist Chruch, while his wife is acommunicant of the Congregational Church. They hold a high position in the social world and are greatly esteemed by those who know them fortheir upright lives. In political sentiment, Mr. Whiting is an advocateof the principles of the Republican Party, and as ever true Americancitizen should do, feels an interest in political affairs. He has, however, never sought or desired public office, preferring to devote his entire time and attention his business interests. He has witnessed almost the entire growth of Fond du Lac County, and is a worthy andvalued citizen.

In 1879 Mr. Whiting was calledupon to mourn the loss of his wife, a most estimable lady, and a memberof the Free-will Baptist Church, who died on the 26th of June of that year.

They hold a high position inthe social world and are greatly esteemed by those who know them fortheir upright lives. In political sentiment, Mr. Whiting is an advocateof the principles of the Republican Party, and as ever true Americancitizen should do, feels an interest in political affairs. He has, however, never sought or desired public office, preferring to devote hisentire time and attention his business interests. He has witnessedalmost the entire growth of Fond du Lac County, and is a worthy andvalued citizen.

26768 The Legacy of TGM

Tomas Garrigue Masaryk - founder and first President of the Republic of Czechoslovakia - is a hero whose world significance and moral authority are unsurpassed among the distinguished figures of his time, a man remarkable not only because of his personal courage and devotion to democracy, but for the harmony between his personality and work - the astonishing unity of his words and deeds.
He was dead before the twin terrors of Nazism and communism took temporary control of his country, and both regimes tried to sweep his memory under the rug. He was ignored at best and vilified at worst during the decades of totalitarian domination.
The communist propaganda machine portrayed him as an enemy of the Soviet Union and of communism, and condemned his leadership in Czechoslovakia. His writings were on the list of forbidden books; his name was removed from streets and monuments in his honor were melted down.
Today, eight years after the fall of communism, Masaryk has become the subject of a modest revival of interest.
Someday the Czech people will realize that Masaryk has surreptitiously exercised a moderating influence upon them because they have lived, so to speak, in his state. For those old enough to remember the first half of this century, or wise enough to have read its history, Masaryk, who founded the republic in 1918, is one of the most important pioneers of what the philosopher Sir Karl Popper called "the open society."
Up from serfdom

His early life would not have hinted that Masaryk was marked to be a world leader. He was born in 1850 in southern Moravia, the son of a Slovak-speaking coachman working on an Imperial estate, and a German-speaking housewife. Encouraged by his parents, Tomas took the long step from his father's illiterate serfdom to becoming a professor of philosophy. After his first term of primary school, he was apprenticed to be a blacksmith. Then he gained an education in the secondary schools in Brno and Vienna. As a high school and university student, he had to seek support from wealthy families by tutoring their children. His studies were finished at the University of Vienna, where he took a doctoral degree in philosophy in 1876. Six years later, he was made professor of philosophy at the Czech university in Prague, and began living in the city for the first time. He taught there until 1914 when war broke out.
Throughout his teaching career, Masaryk thought centered around the crisis of European civilization. He refused to consider its history a play of meaningless, irrational forces, as Leo Tolstoy had argued in War and Peace. Nor did Masaryk embrace a deterministic view of history, explaining everything by economic conditions, technological changes or the class struggle, as Marx did. In fact, Masaryk always maintained--insisted--that history is shaped by ideas in the minds of men and women who can make the future better than the past.
Philosophy and religion

Earlier in his career, Masaryk had diagnosed the crisis of European civilization as the decay of religious beliefs, with the increased incidence of suicide and homicide as its most visible signs. For him, this decline of faith was a sad phenomenon whose explosive social consequences were a serious problem. It appeared to him "as a historical process, as something for which a society is collectively responsible." The remedy offered by Masaryk was simple: people must regain their religious faith, be they Christians, Jews or Muslims.
Masaryk himself was a deeply religious man. His religious feeling was first nurtured by the naive piety of his Catholic mother. Then came school and the intellectual cultivation and justifications produced by contact with his teachers and by his own reflections. He himself joined the protestant church in 1880. To use Max Weber's simile, Masaryk didn't feel himself God's vessel; he rather sensed himself an instrument of God's will, as he drew his moralism from the certainty that he was the God-sent agent of Providence.
A modern view of women

In 1878 Masaryk married Charlotte Garrigue, an American student he had met while at the Leipzig university. After their marriage in New York, he incorporated her maiden name into his own - a radical move even by today's standards, much less those of a century ago. By all accounts, Masaryk loved women, and they, in turn, adored him. But he loved them in a Puritanical way. What he had to say about women in general was often regarded as mildly heretical by some guardians of social mores. Masaryk argued that social development was leading toward democratic equality of opportunity for the sexes.
"The modern woman," Masaryk proclaimed in one of his speeches, "must be active; she must engage herself in public debate while ignoring the old-fashioned mentoring but having, as the French put it, the courage de son opinion. Clearly, such an audacious attitude may be perceived as heresy. But the modern woman must struggle against both prejudice and bluff.
Masaryk is most emphatic and very eloquent on the sexual question, which he sees with the eyes of a firm believer in woman's moral equality with men. In his view, woman as a household drudge or sexual object is destroyed externally and impoverished internally. But Masaryk adds: "I do not preach a sermon about enjoying ascetic life, nor about any act of raping nature or the human body... What I urge is true love between man and woman."
Unmasking Czech anti-Semitism

An intrepid critic who measured the soundness of national life by the criterion of truth, Masaryk's intervention was often without popular backing, especially when he defended the rights of minorities in the Habsburg Empire. For instance, he substantially contributed to the unmasking of Czech anti-Semitism. When an East Bohemian girl was killed in 1899, it revived the superstition of Jewish ritual murders for the purpose of using Christian blood in religious ceremonies. A young Jew, Leopold Hilsner, was arrested and, despite his protestations of innocence, was sentenced to death for committing the crime. In a series of articles, Masaryk refuted the allegation of ritual motives, and urged a revision of the verdict. In a subsequent decision the court dropped the accusation. With unfaltering courage, Masaryk sought justice and to debunk anti-Semitic legends, be they in the minds of the common folk, the schoolmaster or the jingoist, even when going against popular opinion made him a target for the hatred of others.
War, exile and culture

On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo, an act that set off World War I. Shortly afterward, Masaryk, aged 64, went into exile. He became the leading opposition figure abroad, where he strove for the liberation of the Czechoslovak people from Austrian shackles. During the war, he was made the commander in chief of the Czechoslovak Legion, troops assembled from Czechs living abroad--particularly in France, England and America--who were joined by Czech and Slovak conscripts who had become prisoners of war in Russia or who had defected from the Austrian army. These armies fought fierce battles against Austria and Germany on various European battlefronts.
Today, one may be amazed at the fact that these stateless soldiers summoned the will, marshaled the resources, made the sacrifices and rebounded from their blunders in order to fight for their cause under Masaryk's leadership. After the Allied victory in 1918, Masaryk brought his valiant soldiers--an army of 80,000 men--home on an arduous path made necessary by the civil war raging throughout Russia: through Siberia to Vladivostok, and across the Pacific Ocean and the United States. They finally returned to a European homeland where the many deaths caused by the war had given birth to a new republic.
To be sure, the triumph of the Czechoslovak nation was the result not only of Masaryk's leadership but also of Allied support. Toward the war's end, Masaryk had visited Woodrow Wilson in the White House and convinced him that it would be in the interest of the United States to help liberate the Central European nations from the debilitating climate of the Habsburg Empire.
Unlike other European leaders, Masaryk had an advantage in his links to the United States. Not only had he visited there several times and taken an American wife, but he felt at home in the culture and admired what he called American pragmatism.
Masaryk also loved Russian culture, yet there he did have an ax to grind. He was highly critical of the oppressive Czarist regime, the Orthodox Church, mystical Slavophilism, atheistic radicalism and the Marxist quest for power. On cultural matters he was critical but scrupulously fair, the result being an evenhanded evaluation of the interplay of Russian and West European artists and thinkers.
In three volumes titled Russia and Europe, written in German before World War I, he analyzed, with what seems today a remarkable clairvoyance, those various demons of Russian history. In his view, Russia missed the advent of the modern nation-state in the 17th century, bypassing the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution. Those blank spots in its history set the stage for the tragedy to come: The Bolshevik coup that plunged Russia into misery, brutality, isolation and confrontation with the outside world. Masaryk was most insightful when he defended the European interest in his charming and moving book World Revolution (1925), in which he argued that Europeans wished to see the ascendancy of those Russian adherents of democracy who sought the signposts of national revival by looking outward and forward, rather than inward and backward.
The legacy of TGM

After founding democratic Czechoslovakia, Masaryk set about implementing his lofty and guiding principles on the multiethnic and multicultural European continent. During his presidency (1918-1935), Czechoslovakia became an island of democracy, a great educational workshop and a powerful industrial country. It developed a political system marked not only by free and fair elections but also by the rule of law, separation of powers, and the protection of fundamental liberties of speech, assembly, religion and property. In spite of shortcomings and problems, the country gave asylum to many who faced persecution elsewhere, namely in the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, because of their political, national, religious or cultural allegiances. The collaboration among Czechs, Slovaks, Germans, Hungarians and Jews, who had lived in the Central European region from the Middle Ages, produced at that time a uniquely free society with a cosmopolitan culture, one which was tolerant and nearly untouched by the nationalism and xenophobia that mark many multiethnic societies today.
As Sir Karl Popper put it, "Masaryk's Czechoslovakia was the most open of all societies ever to develop in Europe. It lasted for only 20 years. But what difficult and marvelous years! In the shortest time, this open society had built a solid economy and the most solid military defence system in Europe."
In 1938 Britain and France, under the governments of the appeasers, cooperated with Hitler in destroying Czechoslovakia with the notorious Munich Agreements. Masaryk, who had been in poor health for a few years, did not live to see his life's work crushed under the enormous impact of Nazi forces. Nevertheless, his spirit lived on in thousands of quiet "Masarykian" heroes who risked everything to help rescue the lives of persecuted Jews or who struggled against the enemy. The struggle continued until 1989 and the re-establishment of the independent state of Czechoslovakia, with Vaclav Havel as its president.
What, then, is the most significant element of Masaryk's message today, when European history provides no indication that the incredibly diverse peoples of this continent will be able to merge peacefully and voluntarily into a single polity?
Without pretending to be a prophet, Masaryk offered--and still offers--to Europeans a brighter future in terms of his moral insight and universal ethos, one which is the very opposite of the current, dominant secular-hedonistic and nationalist trends. Masaryk calls for a concern for truth and authenticity; a concern for our fellow man and woman; and a passion for justice and freedom and thus for democracy, conceived as a tolerant, open society with equal rights and duties for all citizens, regardless of sex, colour, religion or cultural background.
The creation of a united and prosperous Czech Republic as a multiethnic model in Europe is as central to the policies of Vaclav Havel as it was to those of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk. Both presidents put their faith in democracy, diversity and multiculturalism. This is and will be their lasting legacy.

26775 The only documentation we have in our research for Mary Swift are thefollowing - 1. Chauncey's record of death, where Mary is listed as his mother, and, 2. Paul and Rhea Peck's book "Ancestry" (pp.530-531) whereWilliam Whiting and Mary Swift, both natives of Connecticut are listed as the parents of Price Whiting. In the death records of Bethana and Calistana, Elsie Scribner is recorded and in Ruana's an Elsey Runey is recorded. It is my belief that Mary Swift was the mother of all of Williams children with the exception of Calistana whom was Elsie Scribner's and the second wife to William. I further believe that Mary died soon after Philander's birth in Hampton, NY and that there were complications in his birth due to the fact that he was listed as"idiotic" in later census taken in Castile, NY prior to William's death. William probably married Elsie in Warsaw, NY where together they had Calistana and Elsie undoubtedly played a large part in raising William's young family. One other thing that seems to point in this direction is the fact that Williams Daughter Lizana married a T. J. Scribner which may have been one of Elsie's from a previous marriage. Swift, Mary (I6763)

26789 The Treat Family, by John Harvey Treat, A.M., The Salem Press Publishing & Printing Company, Salem, Massachusetts, 1893. p. 35. Mr. Treat was the oldest son of Richard Treat. By his father's will in 1668-9, he inherited the great farm of Nayog, or Nayaug, of some 900 acres. I find the following record in Vol. 1, Wethersfield Land Records, p. 120. There is no date to the entry: "The lands of Richard Tratt junior, lying on the East sid of the Great River, at a place called Nayake, wh was given by the Townse to his Father for a farme, and is now given to him by his said Father. The bredth by the River sid, meadow and swamp, is three hurndred and ten rods; from the River to a markt tre, being a white oke, is two hundred eighty six rods, on the South sid of that farme. Upon this farme stands his house and barne, upon a parcell of upland wh lys within Mr. Hollister's farme, containing seaven acrs, more or lese. The ends abuts on Mr. Hollister North, and his owne land South; and the sids next the said Mr. Hollister East, and West." This was long called the "Treat Farm," situated in Glastonbury, Conn., and some portion remained in the family to the present generation. March 11, 1657-8, Mr. Treat was chosen corporal of the Train Band in Wethersfield, the first body of cavalry in Connecticut. He is supposed to have died between Feb., 1690, and 1693, as his name appears in a petition of the former date for the incorporation of Glastonbury, but does not appear in a similar document in 1693.

26790 The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Volume 12
edited by Philip Alexander Bruce, William Glover Stanard

Sarah L. Brooke, daughter of Dr. Lawrence Brooke, U. S. Navy, married John Wishart Taliaferro, of which marriage there were ten children. Mary Brooke, daughter of Edmund Brooke, of "Stepney," was the second wife of Hay Taliaferro, of which marriage there were four children. This Edmund was a son of Robert Brooke III, who was the oldest son of Robert Brooke, Jr. (" Knight of the Golden Horseshoe"); his mother was Mary, daughter of William Fauntleroy, and his wife was Harriet Whiting. He was a Revolutionary officer, was in the Virginia Legislature, l798-'9, and voted against Mr. Madison's celebrated resolutions, (Howison's History of Virginia.) It was in his possession that Judge Brooke (his first cousin) says he had often seen the gold horseshoe that was given by Governor Spotswood, in 1716, to Robert Brooke, Jr. The late W. W. Corcoran, of Washington, D. C., said that Edmund Brooke (who then lived in Georgetown) had often shown him the horseshoe. An older sister of the present writer has told him that when she was a young girl, in the summer of 1856, while on a visit to "St. Julien" (home of Mr. Francis T. Brooke), she was shown that horseshoe and had it in her hands several times. What it was doing at "St. Julien " she did not know. It had then been in the family about Mo years, but seems now to be lost. Edmund Brooke and Harriet Whiting certainly had the following children (there may have been others): (i) Mary, married Hay Taliaferro; (2) Susannah, married Dr. Brewer, of Georgetown, D. C.; issue: Mrs. Thomas Carter, Mrs. Harriet Getty, Miss Matilda Brewer and Mrs. Graves. (3) Edmund Brooke, an officer in the U. S. N.; (4) Dr. Mathew Whiting Brooke (educated in medicine in Edinburgh), married a daughter of Warner Lewis,of "Warner Hall," Gloucester county; issue of Dr. Matthew Whiting Brooke and his wife, Elizabeth Lewis, is as follows: (i) Dr. John Lewis Brooke, m. Maria Louisa Ashby; (2) Elizabeth, m. May 15, 1834, Henry Marshall; (3) Courtney, m. November 12, 1836, Robert Selden; (4) Mary Lewis, m. Richard Byrd, of Gloucester. The late Rev. John Ambler, when rector of the Episcopal church in Morgantown, W. Va., told the present writer that he attended the marriage of Elizabeth Brooke to Mr. Henry Marshall, and also the marriage of Courtnay Brooke to Robert Selden, and that Elizabeth, Courtney and Mary Lewis Brooke were three of the prettiest women in the State.
There were six intermarriages between the Brookes and the Taliaferros, including, of course, the two marriages of Richard Brooke, of "Smithfield," to two Taliaferros.

Whiting, Charles Milton (I13583)

26792 There were two Margaret's born to Henry Smith and Ann Pynchon.

The first Margaret born 26 April 1646 died 24 June 1648.

Second Margaret was born 1 November 1648 death unknown.

There are several Margarets (9H7Y-4WM, 94H9-QCX,LZNV-5GR, --records now combined with second Margaret above. However those ID #'s show them as dying 24 June 1648 (1st Margaret's death date) before they were born 1 November 1648 (2nd Margaret's birth date). Someone wasn't paying attention. Since no such person exists, I combined her with the one with the unknown death date since it is obvious she did not die before she was born and by not combining her it showed as another sibling
Smith, Margaret (I26745)

Dennis Kroll (California cousin) October 2008 (From Ancestry.com )"Family Book of Remembrances and Genealogy with Allied Lines" published Dec 25, 1952:
Almira Mehitable Meacham went through all kinds of hardships endured by the early day converts of the Mormon Church. Her parents and their family in their westward migration had made a temporary stop at Springfield, Illinois, where Almirira, at the early age of fifteen, was married to Andrew Warren Palmer. To this marriage were born two sons, Almond Babbitt Palmer, who came to Utah and settled at Nephi, and Warren Palmer, who died in infancy. Soon after the death of this son the father, Andrew Warren Palmer, died (1843).
Two years later Almira was married to Edwin Whiting as a plural wife (Married 3 January 1845, Sealed 27 January 1846 Nauvoo Temple). To this marriage were born the following children, most of them in Sanpete and Utah Counties, Utah: Edward Lucian Whiting, Ellen Emerett Whiting, Catherine Emeline Whiting, Cornelia (Dolly) Whiting (my great grandmother), Elisha Franklin Whiting, Edwin Lafayette Henry Whiting, and Sylvia Almira Whiting.
The Whitings had come to Utah with Captain Morley's company in 1849 and settled in Manti where Edwin Whiting became quite prominent. In "Pioneers and Prominent Men of Utah" he is listed as the first mayor of Manti and as having held other important positions of public responsibility.
In 1861 the family moved to Springville where they lived during the early Indian troubles known as the Black Hawk and Walker Indian Wars.
Almira became one of Utah County's early nurses and midwife and did much in that way to provide a living for her family.
Plural marriage did not bring happiness. There was great pressure by the law and in 1861 Almira and Edwin Whiting separated.
July 24, 1863, Almira married Henry Packard and to this her third marriage was born a daughter, Sophia Olive Packard. Later the Packards moved to Healdsburg, California, where they lived until 1896 when Henry Packard died.
After the death of Henry Packard Almira moved to San Bernardino where she lived in a home given to her by her son-in-law, Nathan Henry Barton, and her daughter Sylvia Almira (Whiting).
Almira Mehitable Meacham passed away 1 October 1898 and is laid to rest in the Pioneer Cemetery in San Bernardino, California.

Dennis Kroll (California cousin) October 2008 (From Ancestry.com)"Family Book of Remembrances and Genealogy with Allied Lines" published Dec 25, 1952:
