Home | Relationship Chart | Book Abstracts | Recollections | Daniel Whiting Research | Daniel Whiting The Ingalls Connection Revised May 30, 2010 Comments, corrections, questions? Contact me. Interestingly, the Whitings share a connection to Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House books, in more ways than one. One interesting aspect is that the Whiting homestead is mentioned in the book "Little Town on the Prairie." It seems one night while Pa Ingalls was asleep, a mouse had gotten in his hair and chewed some off to use for a nest. The next day he had to attend a meeting at the Whiting homestead to help organize the county, Kingsbury, in the newly-formed state of South Dakota. He was concerned about having to take his hat off if Mrs. Whiting were present. As it turned out, he came home with a little kitten for which he had paid 50 cents, a sizable sum in those days, and was glad to get the kitten to help keep the mice under control. Laura Ingalls Wilder and Education in Kingsbury County, 1880-1885 (12 pages), by Nancy Cleaveland, gives a comprehensive account of the time Laura taught in Kingsbury County and also covers the tenure of Amos Whiting as Superintendent of Schools. In addition to the fact that Amos Whiting was acquainted with Charles P. (Pa) Ingalls, Laura's father, Laura had two cousins, Alice and Ella Ingalls, who married Whiting brothers, Leslie Lee Whiting and Arthur Leland Whiting. I have traced the Whiting brothers to their grandfather, Daniel Whiting, but have not yet made a connection to a specific Whiting line. However, after much research, I am quite certain Daniel Whiting is a descendant of Caleb Whiting, the Revolutionary War soldier. Everything I have documented fits nicely, but I do not have a birth record or an adequate reference to his parentage (primary source preferred). Descendants of Giles Whiting, published online (PDF format) by Jeff Maass, indicates that Daniel is the grandson of Caleb M. Whiting, through his son Caleb (# 99), and carries the line down to Leslie Lee and Arthur Leland Whiting. It does not give documentation however. See Daniel Whiting Research for an overview of problems and discrepancies encountered in connecting the line. In the Recollections of Susan (Fairbank) Whiting, Susan Whiting mentions Uncle Daniel and Aunt Rilla (Aurilla) and goes on to say that Uncle Daniel died in 1849 (Part 2: The Wisconsin Years, Paragraph 12), which agrees with the information I have on Daniel Whiting. She also mentions Uncle Dorris in the same paragraph and Amos elsewhere in the account. Amos and Dorris are brothers of her husband, Newell. This, along with BLM land records, shows that Daniel and Aurilla Whiting do have some connection to my Whitings. It is also interesting to note that a brother of Charles Phillip Ingalls (Laura's father) and Peter Riley Ingalls (Alice and Ella's father) was George Whiting Ingalls, and the father of these three brothers was Lansford Whiting Ingalls. The fact that George and Lansford both bore the middle name Whiting is an indication that a past relative may have been a Whiting. Sometimes a child was named after someone famous, such as a president. For instance, Andrew Jackson Whiting, father of Leslie and Arthur Whiting, may likely have been named after the president, Andrew Jackson. Also, it is possible that a name may have been used to honor a local celebrity or hero, or just a notable person in the community. People often refer to second and third cousins, etc., as "cousin," or somewhat of a blanket coverage for a "relative." In her "Recollections," Susan (Fairbanks) Whiting may have referred to Daniel and Rilla as Uncle and Aunt in the same sense as cousin. Note that Susan had a sister also named Aurilla. This is likely the Rilla mentioned in the very beginning of her Recollections. What follows is information I have on the family of Peter Riley Ingalls. PETER RILEY INGALLS was born October 28, 1833 in Cuba Twp., Allegheny, New York, and died March 22, 1900 in Milaca, Mille Lacs, Minnesota; bur. Forest Hill Cemetery, Milaca. He married ELIZA ANN QUINER June 6, 1861 in Concord, Jefferson, Wisconsin. She was born April 21, 1842 in Brookfield Twp., Waukesha, Wisconsin, and died June 6, 1931 in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California; bur. Hemet, California. See The Ingalls Inquirer, Vol. 5, No. 2 - July, 1988, for Eliza Ann (Quiner) Whiting's obituary. Also see The Ingalls Inquirer, Vol. 9, No. 2 - July, 1992, for a short note concerning the grave of Peter Riley Ingalls at Milaca, Minnesota. Some sources have given the place of death for Peter as Mazeppa, Minnesota, and others as Milaca, Minnesota. I checked Milaca and found this entry in a ledger at the registrar's office at the Mille Lacs County Courthouse (Book B, page 3, line 30): Bogus Brook (township), Name - Peter Riley Ingalls, Date of Birth - October 28 - 67 years, 5 months old, Died - March 22, 1900, Cause of Death - Fatty degeneration of the heart, Duration - 6 months, Occupation - Farmer, Born - New York, Father - Lansford Ingalls, Last Residence - Milaca, Parents' Birthplace - Canada. The entries in this book are original entries (entries made as the events occurred). The stone gives his birth year as 1834 but the information in the ledger matches everything else. I located his grave at Forest Hill Cemetery, Milaca, on the west bank of the Rum River. It is just inside the gate (about four car-lengths) and on the river side, just before the water spigot. It's a flat stone within six feet of the lane. Judging from the style of the stone, it was likely placed there several years after Peter died in 1900. A photo of his grave and a short bio has been posted on Find-A-Grave. It also includes a picture of Peter and Eliza, which was posted by an Ingalls fan. Children of PETER RILEY INGALLS and ELIZA QUINER are: i. ALICE JOSEPHINE INGALLS, b. April 23, 1862; d. January 30, 1934. She married ARTHUR LELAND WHITING March 20, 1881 in Wabasha, Minnesota, son of ANDREW JACKSON WHITING and URANIA BROWN. He was born was born December 3, 1859 in Claremont, Dodge, Minnesota, and died January 3, 1949 in Ventura, California. Both are buried Bellevue Cemetery, Ontario, San Bernardino, California. ii. ELLA ESTELLA INGALLS, b. January 23, 1865 in Wiconsin; d. March 9, 1945. She married LESLIE LEE WHITING November 29, 1883 in Dakota Territory, son of ANDREW JACKSON WHITING and URANIA BROWN. He was born March 8, 1858 in Claremont, Dodge, Minnesota, and died June 3, 1927 in Riverside, Riverside, Californi iii. PETER FRANKLIN INGALLS, b. November 16, 1866; d. September 23, 1932. [The (1) means they lived in the county 1 year.] This property is believed to have belonged to his father, Peter Riley Ingalls, originally. Some of Peter's descendants later located in Burnett County, Wisconsin, which is basically straight east of Milaca, just a few miles into Wisconsin. v. EDITH FLORENCE INGALLS, b. June 29, 1872; d. July 13, 1951. She married HEIL NELSON BINGHAM June 9, 1892. vi. EDMOND LLEWELLYN INGALLS, b. 1880. He married EDITH MAE ________. Also, listed in the Birth Record Search Site For South Dakota Birth Records With Birth Dates Over 100 Years is Bruce Ingalls Whiting, born 01/12/1889 in Beadle County to Katie May Ingalls and Wilfred Barron Whiting (state file number 566058). Beadle is the next county west of Kingsbury County. From information obtained from another Whiting researcher, it doesn't seem that he is closely related to my Whiting line. The relationship, if any, to Laura Ingalls Wilder is still unknown. As an added note on the Ingalls family, a very interesting article concerning Mary Ingalls and her years at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton, Iowa, is located on the Benton County IAGENWEB Project site. I. Hallagan, Canastota, Bruised About Shoulder in Accident on Seneca Turnpike. SPECIAL TO THE POST-STANDARD. CANASTOTA. Nov. 30. - J. I. Hallagan of this village and a Mr. Manton of Rome were thrown from a carriage, in which they were riding in Seneca turnpike last night, when a heavy lumber wagon drawn by a team of horses collided with their rig. Mr. Hallagan was driving east near the Canastota creek bridge and the wagon, which is claimed to have struck the carriage, was going in the opposite direction. Mr. Hallagan was bruised about the right shoulder. His companion escaped with minor injuries. The horse, which was from a local livery, freed itself from the wagon and ran away. At the Central railroad crossing in Peterboro street the animal demolished the south gate, which was down, and ran into the bumpers between two freight cars standing on the crossing, then turned and ran into Clockville, where it was stopped. William Whiting was a very wealthy merchant who had received a patent for land at Sevanscot with Lord Say and Lord Brook. He served as treasurer of Connecticut colony from 1642 to 1647 and died in July of the latter year. His wife passed away July 8, 1673. Their son Joseph Whiting , who was born October 2, 1640 and died October 8, 1717, was married in 1676 to Anna Allyn, who was born August 18, 1652, and died March 3, 1735. She was a daughter of Colonel John and Ann (Smith) Allyn. Her father, who was secretary of the Connecticut colony for twenty-eight years, was born February 24, 1630, and died November 11, 1696. John Whiting, son of Joseph and Anna (Allyn) Whiting, was born December 15, 1693, and died February 12, 1766. He married Jerusha Lord, who was born in 1699 and died in 1776. Their son Allyn Whiting was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, being a private in Major Sheldon's'Regiment of Light Horse and Colonel Enos' Regiment on the Hudson. He was born June 23, '1740, and died February 9, 1818. He and his wife Elizabeth joined the church at West Hartford in 1758. Their son Joseph Whiting was born in August, 1763, and died February 16, 1842. He was 'married in 1784 to Mary Goodwin, who was born in 1766 and died in 1835. Their son Allyn Whiting, who was the grandfather of our subject, was born July 4, 1788, and died in Aurora, Illinois, November 3, 1871. He married Amanda Alford, who was born June 6, 1796, and died May 3, 1849. Their son Samuel Phelps Whiting, the father of our subject, was born September 19, 1821, in Hartford, Connecticut, and was married, in Litchfield, that state, May 28, 1845, to Miss Lucretia Morse who was born in Litchfield, August 22, 1823, and died April 5, 1901. She was a daughter of Jacob and Harriet Morse, who were married March 14, 1821. Her mother was born March 17, 1800, and died February 28, 1882, in Litchfield. Her father was born in that city March 6, 1792, and was a son of Levi and Thalia (Sanford) Morse. Levi Morse was born in Litchfield, September 19, 1775, and died January 20, 1841. His wife was born October 26, 1776, and died July 16, 1854. Mrs. Lucretia (Morse) Whiting belonged to a very prominent old New England family and a monument has been erected which bears the following inscription: "To the memory of seven Puritans who emigrated from England to America in 1635-9. John Morse, born 1604, settled at New Haven and died at Wallingford, Connecticut, 1707, aged one hundred and three years. Samuel Morse, born 1585, settled at Dedham, 1636, died at Medfield, 1654. Joseph Morse, settled at Ipswich, where he died 1646. Anthony Morse, born at Marlboro, England, 1606, died at Newbury, 1686. William Morse, born 1608, died 1685. Robert and Peter, their brothers, settled and died in New Jersey." Samuel Phelps Whiting, the father of our subject, conducted a meat market in his native city until coming to Victoria, Illinois, in 1851, with his brother Richard and family. They engaged in mercantile business for two years and at the end of that time Samuel P. Whiting removed to Altona, where he opened'a meat market. In addition to that business he also engaged in the raising and shipping of cattle, horses and hogs, becoming one of the leading men engaged in that enterprise in the locality. He disposed of his stock in Peoria, which was the nearest market. His was one of the first frame houses built in Altona and was situated on Main street, opposite the present place of business of Samuel M. Whiting. In 1878 he admitted his son Samuel as a business partner and subsequently purchased and edited for five years Altona's only newspaper -the Altona Journal. He took an active interest in public affairs and was a supporter of the republican party. After a useful and well spent life he passed away in March, 1907. In his family were four children: Samuel M.- of this review; Della, the wife of A. H. Miles, a druggist of Des Moines, Iowa; Inez, the wife of A. G. Edwards, a druggist and ex city treasurer of Omaha, Nebraska; and Angie, the wife of Ernest R. Smith, of Palo Alto, California. Samuel M. Whiting has been engaged in the meat market business since he finished school at the age of fifteen years. In addition to conducting his market he has also bought and shipped cattle to the near-by markets. For one year he ran a restaurant and from 1892-to 1897 he conducted a meat market in Galesburg but then returned to Altona. In his dealings he has maintained the strictest business integrity, realizing that satisfied customers are the best advertisement. He keeps in touch with the trade, knows what the market offers and carries a good line of meats, while his prices are reasonable and his treatment of his patrons always courteous. Mr. Whiting was married to Miss Ella M. Pierce, of Walnut Grove township whose birth occurred January 5, 1860. She is a daughter of Mathew Pierce, who came to Altona from New York state when very young and is now living retired at Galesburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Whiting four children have been born: Claude N., an electrician, who married Jennie Nelson and is residing in Cairo, Illinois; Harry S., the assistant cashier of the State Bank at Victoria, Illinois, who married Lillian Wenstrom, of Altona, and they have a little daughter, Lucile, born January 11, 1912; Inez, who is engaged in teaching music and is residing at home; and Mathew Pierce, who since his graduation from school has assisted his father in the meat market. Mr. Whiting is an active and enthusiastic republican and has frequently been elected to ofiice. He has served as village clerk and has four times been elected supervisor, his first election being in 1889. For nine years he served as county committeeman and during that time did much active work in furthering the interests of the republican party. Practically his whole life has been spent in Altona, where he has the distinction of being one of the two oldest business men. He occupies a place of prominence as one of the energetic business men, succeeding in what he undertakes by reason of his forceful character and his strict conformity to modern business methods. http://books.google.com/books?pg=PA871&lpg=PA871&dq=John+Whiting+Jerusha+Lord&id=OU00AQAAMAAJ&ots=zibB_7Xqps&output=text | Whiting, Allyn (I6496)
