| 1522 | Came to America on the "Griffin" with Thomas Hooker in 1633. Took Freeman's Oath May 14, 1634, and settled first in Cambridge. Samuel Stone was the teaching colleague of Thomas Hooker at Hartford, CT. Hartford was named for Stone's home in England, Hertford. He was a firm opponent of the "half-way covenant." Chaplain of troops under Captain John Mason in Pequot War. After Hooker died he got into a squabble with church members which was described by Savage as "equally bitter and unintelligible." Mather considered the origin "undiscoverable." The dispute could not be resolved, and in 1659 about 35 families left Hartford to found the town of Hadley in Massachusetts. When Stone died 1/5 of his estate was in books. Studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. On March 1 1654/55 Walter Filer (#3208) charged Samuel Stone in court with "breach of a fundamental law" and the "elders in general sin and wickedness", but Filer's conduct was deemed insufferable and his charges baseless. John D. Baldwin of Worcester, Mass., in 1883, printed his incomplete notes of Thomas Stanton and his descendants. Baldwin says of Thomas' 'It is supposed, with strong probability, that he was the son o Thomas and Katherine (Washington) Stanton, of the Long! bridge family.' This supposition was suggested to Mr. Baldwir- by Mr. B. L Stanton, then of Albany, N. Y., but now of St. Paul Minn. Mr. B. L Stanton for years has been preparing genealogie; of the descendants of Robert Stanton of R. L and of Paul Stantor of Maine. He is a descendant of Paul. In his search amont English records he found a Thomas Stanton, born 1616, in Wolver ton, Warwickshire, Eng., son of Thomas and Katherine (Wash ington) Stanton. "Thomas, the father, was born 1595 and was in turn the son of Thomas Stanton, who was the son of John and Elizabeth (Townsend) Stanton of Longbridge, Warwick Co. No further record of Thomas, born 1616, has ever been found than the one! made in the Visitation of the County of Warwick in 1619. He' was then three years old. "xMr. B. I. Stanton thought this might be Thomas Stanton of Connecticut. Mr. Baldwin adopted the suggestion and so printed it. "It may be true, but it is not proven. If this was our Thomas he would have been 19 when he embarked at London in 163^^ but he gave his age as 20. This could be explained, however, bv the existence of a law forbidding emigration, without parent or guardian, under 20 years of age. It was not uncommon, there- fore, for young men to 'borrow time,' as they termed it, and add a necessary year or two to their true age. Thomas may have borrowed time' to make himself 20 years old in 1635. "This family of Stantons came to Wolverton from Long- bridge near the city of Warwick, in 1576, and became extinct m the first half of the 18th century." http://archive.org/stream/bookcalledouranc00stan/bookcalledouranc00stan_djvu.txt ===================================================================================== http://www.mocavo.com/visit?q=Born+1599+England&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archive.org%2Fstream%2Fnewenglandfamili11cutt%2Fnewenglandfamili11cutt_djvu.txt&m=d09e602c1004151bae584738b5217f33&i=13291508375837407161&title=Full+text+of+%22New+England+families%2C+genealogical+and+memorial%3B+a+record+of+the+achievements+of+her+p first wife John Stanton had seven children and by his second one child. The surname Stanton is derived from a place name, and is identical with Stonington in origin. The family is of ancient English ori- gin. Robert Stanton, an early settler of New- port, Rhode Island, was the progenitor of Hon. Edwin M. Stanton, of Lincoln's cabinet; died in Newport in 1672, aged seventy-three. There was a John Stanton in \'irginia in 1635, and Thomas Stanton, aged twenty, sailed for \'irginia in 1635 'n the merchantman "Bona- ventura". The family historian thinks he went to \'irginia, but many ships whose rec- ords state that Virginia was the destination came to New England. The "Bonaventura" may have landed some passengers in Mrginia, others in Connecticut or Boston. http://www.mocavo.com/visit?q=Elizabeth+Townsend&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archive.org%2Fstream%2Fnewenglandfamili01cutt%2Fnewenglandfamili01cutt_djvu.txt&m=843877457c9047baa4ada2c295a6ab0a&i=11460507547789092876&title=Full+text+of+%22New+England+families%2C+genealogical+and+memorial+%3A+a+record+of+the+achievements+of+her http://www.archive.org/stream/newenglandfamili01cutt/newenglandfamili01cutt_djvu.txt ============================================================================================================================================= https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=ohwwAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA9 Thomas Stanton Family History. Talks about Robert Stanton being Brother to Thomas Stanton*** A SKETCH OF THOMAS STANTON, TnE FIRST OF THIS FAMILY IN AMERICA, 1635-1677. Part I. A compilation of such facts relating to our first Stanton an cestor in America, as have been gathered from a multitude of sources, will form a proper introduction to this genealogy and history of his descendants. From the New England Historical and Genealogical Register (vol. ii, p. 113), we learn that January 2, 1635, Thomas Stan ton took passage for Virginia in the merchantman Bonaven- tura, and that he recorded himself as being twenty years old. The ship's record shows no other passenger named Stanton. It is certain, therefore, that he came unattended by any relative bearing the same name. There was a John Stanton in Virginia prior to 1635; from 1652 to 1688 there are records of a Robert Stanton of Dorchester, Mass., and another Robert Stanton, a Quaker, was a resident of Newport, R. I., prior to 1645. This Robert of Newport died in 1672, aged 73 years. His descend ants are now very numerous in the United States, and many of them are still Friends or Quakers. As Edwin M. Stanton, Lin coln's great Secretary of War, has been thought by many to be a descendant of Thomas, I will state here that he is in direct line from Robert of Newport. Savage and many of the older New England genealogists guessed that Robert was an older brother to Thomas, but there is not the slightest evidence to that ==================================================================================================== http://www.mocavo.com/visit?q=devonshire+repository&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.archive.org%2Fstream%2Fhistoryantiquiti04lips%2Fhistoryantiquiti04lips_djvu.txt&m=4fac0e10c2781319462dd4460875fd5e&i=08627137625349462677&title=Full+text+of+%22The+history+and+antiquities+of+the+county+of+Buckingham%22 A SECOND MANOR, called the Manor of Rroughton, which had belonged to that family from 1219 to about 1529, has been very unintelligibly described by Browne Willis, as having passed to William Lord Lovel, of Morley, who died seised, 23 July 1475; leaving a son, Henry, and a daughter, Alice. Henry died s. p. and was succeeded by his sister, Alice, who was married to Sir William Parker, created, in her right. Lord Morley, in 1510; and his widow married, secondly, Sir Edward Howard, K.G., second son of Thomas Duke of Norfolk, and died in 1518. On the death of John Broughton, Esq., s. p., the ]\Lanor passed by the marriage of Catharine, his daughter and heir, to the Hon. W^illiam Howard; whose son conveyed it to Henry Morton, Esq. circ. 1598 ; for he then held his first Court here, and soon afterwards sold the estate to Robert Stanton, Esq., who was in possession in 16-20. About ten years subsequently, Stanton sold it to William Knight, Esq., who held a Court here in 1632 ; and in 1634-5, he sold it to Bernard Gregory, Esq., of whose grand-daughters it was purchased by William Lowndes, sen. Esq. of Chesham, who bequeathed it to his son, William Lowndes, Esq. | 1537 | Page 493 [208] Will of William Whiting died 24 July 1647 William Whiting was at Hartford in 1636, a wealthy merchant who had been engaged in a patent for lands at Swamscot with Lord Say and Lord Brook. He had wife Susanna, son William and perhaps John before leaving England. Savage says that possibly he came with Thomas Wiggin in 1633, and probably he came from Cambridge MA, since other prominent persons removed thence that year. He was an early member of First Church, and his name is on the Founders Monument of Hartford. In 1637 Whiting was one of the first representatives; in 1641, Assistant; and he served as Treasurer of the Colony from 1643 to his death in 1647, when he was called Major. Inv. | 1538 | PILG006 P 25 David inherited his father's property at Plymouth, but they lived in Kingston,,Massachusits. He died there His widow subsequently married a Mr. Ludden of Boston. I no longer believe that David Bradford is the father of Samuel Bradford (husband of Sarah Bradford). New research indicates that that Samuel Bradford and his brother James (father of the famous Whiskey Rebellion David Bradford), were of "Scotch-Irish" background, their families having come from Northern Ireland. I do not believe that current research supports Samual and James tie into the Gov. Bradford line through this David Bradford. !PRF CD #35- per Mayflower Increasings by Susan ROSER. | 1549 | Will of William Whiting 20 March 1643 Whereas by the Providence of God, I William Whiting doe intend a voyage presently unto sea, mans life being allwayes incident to change, but so much the more in regard of my voyage, therefore, I did think good, if God should not returne mee with safety, to leave some lynes in general, as my last Will and Testament. And whereas that estate I have doth lye in such a manner as it is uncerteine that it will be, therefore my will is it should bee thus devided: I give unto my loving wife, halfe my houshould stuffe of all kinds, and one fourth parte of my whole personal estate; and her widdowes estate in my now dwelling howse and lands at Hartford, until my sonne William be the age of twenty and one yeares, and after, if shee continue a widow, I give her the one halfe of my said howse and land for her life. I bequeath unto my sonne William, one hundred pound more then I give unto either my sonne John or my sonne Samuell. I bequeath unto my sonne John one hundred pounds more, and my sonne Samuell, one hundred pounds more a peece, then I give unto my daughter Sarah or unto my daughter Mary. The fourth parte of my estate being taken out for my wife, one hundred pound for my eldest sonne not being accounted with the rest, hee having an equal proportion with my two other sons in the estate, my other two sons and hee taking one hundred a peece, I bequeath the rest of my estate thus: first, to have L20 paid unto Mr. Hooker, towards the furtherance of setting forth for the benefit of the church his worke upon the 17th of John, * with any else he doth intend. I desire Mr. Stone may have added unto the L5 I did promise him, L5 more. Allso, I bequeath L5 towards the mending of the high ways betwixt my howse and the meeting howse. Allso, I give L5 to some godly poore in the Towne. These sums being taken out, I doe bequeath the rest of my estate unto my five children to bee equally devided amongst them, that is every one a like proportion; and this my said estate to bee improved unto the best advantage for the breeding up of my children in learning, to schoole, and in the feare of God; and theire portions to bee paid before the age of twenty and one years, as the providence of God shall give occasion. And my will is that if any of them dye before the said tearme of yeares, the portion shoul bee devided among the rest of my children. And that this my will may bee performed, I doe earnestly intreat my much honored frends and beloved in the Lord, Mr. John Haynes, Mr. Edward Hopkins, Mr. John Webster, with or deare and loving Paston, Mr. Thomas Hooker and Mr. Samuell Stone, to bee ovrseers of this my last will and Testament, not doubting they will endeavor the performance of the same. In testimony of my love to them, I doe bequeath, out of my whole personall estate, L10 a peece: Allso, I doe bequeath unto my Father and Mother L20 , and if they bee dead my mind is it should bee given unto my brother and his children. My meaning is, my land and howse shall bee accounted a parte of my sonne William, his portion. And my will is, if those my ovrseersdoe thinke my second sonne fit to make a scholar, for his natural parts, and also in the gifts of his ind hopefull to keepe the fire upon the jAlltar, my will is hee should bee sett aparte for that service.
