Whiting, Susannah (I1536)

26728 Susannah/Mary was previously married to William Whiting-they lived in Hartford, CT and had several children before his death. Susannah and Samuel married in Hartford where Samuel taught school 1650-1653. "Parents were required to provide 'either a little load of wood or three shillings toward procuring it". He was also a representative to the General Court in 1654 and 1655.
After Samuel's death after only nine years of marriage, Susannah married again, to Alexander Bryan and lived in Milford, CT. She died at the home of a daughter.

There was a Samuel Fitch who was in Milford, CT in 1644, but he supposidly moved to Norwalk, CT. The Samuel, son of Thomas of Bocking, was born in 1626- far too young to be married to Susanna.

1820 census Robertson Co., TN shows no Whitings.
1828 tax list - Arkansas state census - Arkansas Co., Mississippi Township, also George Whiting (father/brother?) 1830 census Arkansas Co., Mississippi Township, #077 age 20-30 alone, also George Whiting (father/brother?) 1832 tax list - Arkansas state census - Arkansas County, Mississippi Township, also George Whiting (father/brother?)
1830 census Robertson Co., TN thoroughly researchd shows no George Whiting, only James T. Whiting age 20-29, Ruth Snowda {Snody} age 30-39, and Sarah Whiting age 50-59. George could be deceased and Sarah his widow?

The court names children Ruth Snody {Snowda}, James Thomas Whiting; Elijah Whiting; Allen Whiting; William Whiting & Elizabeth McIntosh. It shows the land division to his children dated 21 Aug 1834. He is already dec'd. It was presented in open court at the November 1834
TN Land Grant No. 6011 for 50 acres dated 24 Aug 1829.
Purchased 53 acres that was another's land grant dated 7 Sep 1829.
Deed recorded 3 Sep 1829 he bought a young slave girl named Mary about 12 years old. This is recorded in Deed Book X, pg 431. This same slave is mentioned as being hired out in 1834. If you look at Sarah Whiting in the 1830 census she has only one female slave between the age of 10 to 24. The girl was sold on 20 September 1834 at public sale and purchased by Reuben Rose for $378.00, signed by W. Haley, Administrator.
Three surveys that were dated 1826 and 1831. Total of all three is 203 acres. The witnesses on two of them was Bazel McIntosh (his s-n-law) and Allen Whiting (son).
12 May 1834, page 488; Court Minute Books Volume 10 is found on microfilm roll #123 is the first entry about George W. Whiting, dec'd; "Letters of Administration is granted to William Haley on the estate of George Whiting, a good indicator that George died shortly prior to that date.
George Whiting's Inventory & Account Estate Sale dated 14 Jun 1834. Half the items where hand tools & equipment and half where literary works , there is a Bible, psalm book, marriage ceremony, dictionary, English grammer, volumes on Washington, Franklin, Thos. Jones and many more books to project a well read person and possibly a preacher. Only one family member bought six items and is listed as Sarah Whiting (there is a Sarah Whiting in the 1830 Robertson census age 50-59 with two young male 10-14 & 15-19 [could be his wife?] living next to daughter Ruth Snowda {Snody}). All jurors in his land partiton purchased several items. A John G. McIntosh (related to Bazol?) is listed as buying three items.
15 Aug 1834 Elizabeth McIntosh represents to the court that George W. Whiting has died, possessed of considerable property. She with Elijah and Allen Whiting, heirs, petition the court. Allen and the children of William Whiting are under 21. Sarah Whiting to be appointed special guardian of Allen and James T. Will Book 9, pg 237, 30 April 1836; William Haley, Admr of the estate of George Whiting, dec'd, settlement was made for $350.00.
Will Book 9, pg 424, June 1837; Richard W. Mantlo, Guardian of four of the children of William Whiting, dec'd.; Sophia, Sally, Elijah and Betsy Ann Whiting, children of William Whiting and heirs at law of George Whiting, dec'd.
Will Book 10, pg 476, 1 January 1837; Richard W. Mantlo, Guardian for the heirs of George Whiting, dec'd. (no names, referred to as "minors")
Will Book 10, pg 123 & 125, 6 May 1837; Richard W. Mantlo, Guardian for the heirs of George Whiting, dec'd. Refers to amount paid "ward", no name given; also amount paid for schooling and boarding, no name.
Will Book 10, pg 214, 6 May 1838; Richard W. Mantlo, Guardian for the minor heirs of George Whiting, dec'd
Will Book 11, pg 52, 1 January 1840; Richard W. Mantlo, Guardian for the heirs of George Whiting, dec'd (no names, referred to as "Wards")
Unfortunately, none of these reports name these minor heirs of George Whiting, but in 1840, there was still at least one minor heir. At some point during this time, looks like between 1834 and 1837, Richard W. Mantlo became the Guardian for the minor heirs of George Whiting. This could indicate the death of Sarah. I will need to read more of the un-indexed County Court Minutes. I still have found no mention of a Dower being set aside for his widow (Sarah?). Hopefully, some of these answers will be found in these Court Minutes. There is the question as to whether these minor heirs are actually children of George, himself, or are they the children of William Whiting, who are also heirs of George due to the death of their father? It was not uncommon for the widow to buy items at the Estate sale. However, a Dower or provisions should have been set aside for Sarah and her minor children. I have searched the Index to the Loose Chancery Court Records for Robertson County, 1844-1946, but unfortunately, there were no cases in these files for this Whiting family. I was somewhat disappointed because if there was a law suit in these files, they are filled with lots of good information. I also have searched the Loose Settlements and Guardian reports, 1839-1900, but found no cases for the Whiting minor heirs. There is no index to the Probate Deeds, 1833-1836.
