Nancy was born in Ontario, New York. She is the daughter of Rufus Roderick Barnum and Eliza Aldrich. The family migrated to Montrose, Iowa sometime in the early 1840's. She married George Whiting, on September 15, 1844 in Lee County, Iowa. She and her husband moved to Middletown, Marquette County, Wisconsin, shortly after their marriage where George farmed. The couple had three children: Adeline (Kennedy), Viola (Carr), and George J. Her husband was killed by a stroke of lightning in 1854. Shortly thereafter, Nancy sold the farm and removed to Keokuk, Iowa. There, she married Charles Henry on Jan 22, 1855 and moved to Oakland California. Her husband died sometime after 1880. Nancy married a W.N. Cook after the death of Charles. He appears to have died before 1900. (Birth information, parents, and date of first marriage is from http://barnum.org.
