Name: Hannibal Allen Hopkins late of Spring Lake, Michigan, was born in Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York, September 5, 1821. He was the third son in a family of seven children. His father, Captain Benjamin Hopkins, moved to Canada, in 1831, and from there, in 1837, to Michigan, at a point on Grand River, now the site of the village of Eastmanville. His son early became actively engaged in agricultural and lumber enterprises at Eastmanville and Spring Lake. In 1845, the firm of Hopkins and Brother erected two large saw-mills and entered extensively into the manufacture of lumber, In 1848 Mr. Hopkins was elected Sheriff of Ottawa County. In 1868 he was elected the first President of the village. Both of these offices he held two years. He was the originator of the project which resulted in the discovery of the medical properties of the mineral springs of Spring Lake, in 1870. In politics he adhered to the Democratic party. Mr. Hopkins was a man of high literary attainments. His most marked characteristic was a modest reserve; he never obtruded his opinions or advice unless they were frankly solicited. He was a safe counselor and a warm-hearted, reliable friend. The wants of the poor never appealed to him in vain. Socially, he was genial, tolerant of the opinions of others, and possessed of a fund of information, which made his conversation entertaining and instructive. Inflexible truth and honor were the groundwork of his character. In 1851, he married Emma C. Comfort, sister of Rev. W. Comfort, and removed to Spring Lake, where he died, July 18, 1871, leaving a widow and five children.
