Birth: Jul. 21, 1847 Wisconsin, USA
Death: Apr. 22, 1900 Illinois, USA
The Moline Daily Dispatch Monday Evening April 23, 1900: Mrs. Sampson Kennedy, in her 53d year, died at the city hospital early Sunday morning, after a surgical operation had been performed Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Kennedy's strength did not prove sufficient to withstand the shock. Mrs. Kennedy had lived many years in Moline, and had come to be known and respected as a most exemplary and lovable woman. Her death will be sincerely mourned by all who knew her. Adaline Whiting the oldest of three children, was born in Marquette County, Wisconsin, July 21, 1847. When about 7 years old her father, a prosperous pioneer farmer, was killed by a stroke of lightning. Her mother soon after disposed of the farm and returned to her former home at Keokuk, Iowa, and later moved to Monmouth, Ill., where Miss Adaline grew up to womanhood. November 6, 1866, she was married to Mr. Sampson Kennedy. After several years spent in Monmouth and Chicago, Mr. Kennedy came to Moline in 1871, and here, with the exception of five years spent in Davenport, the family has since made its home. Six children were born of the union, the first dying at birth. The others, Robert B., Adaline, Philip S., Alice and Sam W., survive with their father to mourn the loss of a loving and self-sacrificing mother and companion. Her mother, Mrs. W.N. Cook, Ocean View, Cal.: her sister, Mrs. Chas. Carr, New Monterey, Cal., and her brother Julian also remain to sorrow for her death. The funeral takes place tomorrow forenoon at 10:30 from the residence, 421 Eleventh street, the Rev. W.W. Willard officiating. (IX) William Whiting, Son of Dr. Augustus Whiting (8), was born in Haverhill. Massachusetts, September 13, 1826. He attended the public schools of Charlestown, Benjamin Greenleaf school and Bradford Academy. He resided for a time after his marriage at Merrimac, Massachusetts; he bought' a residence on Main street, Andover, where his children were born. Afterward he bought a fine estate of one hundred acres at Billerica, Massachusetts, which he still retained at the time of his decease. While he and Mrs. Whiting were travelling and spending the winter in Florida, he was accidentally killed on the railroad at Sorrento, January, 1888. His body was brought home to Billerica for burial, and rests in the family lot. He had placed in Billerica Unitarian Church a marble tablet in honor of his ancestor, the Rev. Samuel Whiting, the first minister of Billerica, 1658. Mr. Whiting was a staunch Republican in politics, and was greatly interested and generous in public affairs, but owing to a difficulty in hearing declined to accept public office. He was a close observer, read widely and thought deeply. He was a faithful member of the Unitarian church and active in church work.
William Whiting married. December 30. 1852, Anne Stickney Brown, of Bradford, Massachusetts, a member of the old families of Kimball-Harton. Children, born at Billerica: 1. Augustus Harton, died 1889: he was interested in medicine, studied at Harvard Medical School and with Dr. Bachelder, of Boston. 2. Millard Weston, died May 4. 1878; he was a student at Phillips Academy. Andover. 3. Wilfred Elton, died 1867. 4.

Samuel Whiting Staley, born October 2, 1896, died January 23, 1907; he was a rarely beautiful child, of a lofty and rare spiritual personality. He was a member of the Asa Pollard Society, Children American Revolution. Mrs. Whiting resides at "The Apple Boughs," Old Concord road, Billerica. her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Staley. sharing the home with her. She has in her possession land which has been in the family for over two hundred and fifty years.
