COLONEL WILLIAM WHITING

WILLIAM WHITING. third son of John Whiting and Sybil
Col1ins, was born in 1659. Goodwin's Genealogical Notes,
p, 331, gives the following account of him:

“William Whiting represented Hartford in the General
Court from 1710 to 1715 and speaker in 1714. In 1693 he
went as Captain of a company of whites and Indians to Maine.
"In 1705 he held the title of Major.
"In 1709 he bore the rank of Colonel and led a body of
horse and infantry into the county of Hampshire to repel the
French and Indians. In 1710 he was in command of the troops
at Port Royal in 1711 in the expedition against Canada.
Colonel Whiting was sheriff of Hartford County in 1722.

He removed to Newport, R. I., late in life and probably died
there."
William. Whiting married October 6, 1686, Mary Allyn
( 1657-1724), the daughter of Colonel John Allyn and the
great-granddaughter of William Pynchon.

CHARLES WHITING
The second child of Colonel William Whiting and Mary
Allyn was born July 5, 1692, and was christened Charles. This
is the first time the name “Charles" appears in the Whiting]
family. The name was seldom bestowed. upon Puritan chil-
dren. This may have been due to the antipathy felt through-
out New England to the Stuart kings who played with the
destinies of the New England colonies as with pawns in a
game of chess. It became, however, a popular name with the
Whitings, and after this one child in each generation was called

“Charles." This Charles Whiting bore the title of Lieutenant.
, (Goodwin, p, 334).
He married January 10.1716, Elizabeth Bradford (I696-
1777), daughter of Samuel Bradford of Duxbury, Mass., and
great-granddaugbter of Governor William Bradford of Plym-
outh. Her mother. Hannah Rogers, was the descendant of
John and Priscilla Alden. In the children of these two the
blood of the Bradfords, Aldens, Rogers, Mullins, Whitings.
Pynchons and Allyns was united.

Archibald McNeil, founder of the Connecticut line, was of Branford, where in 1735 he purchased lands. Subsequently he was a prominent citizen of New Haven, was assessor in 1740 and surveyor of highways in 1746, and was conspicuous in real estate transactions. A circumstance of particular interest is his participation, as one of the "brothers" in founding the first Masonic lodge in Connecticut (now known as Hiram Lodge, No. 1), at a meeting "held at Jehiel Tuttle's in New Haven on the festival of St. John the Evangelist, 1750". This was only seventeen years after the first institution of Masonry in the American colonies (which occurred at Boston, July 3, 1733).

Archibald McNeil was successfully engaged in the trade with the West Indies, in partnership with Samuel Cook (who was named as executor of his will), and was owner and supercargo of the ship "Peggy and Molly". He died in the island of Jamaica in the latter part of 1752 (see "Connecticut Colonial Records", vol. X, p. 577), and his will was probated in July, 1753, by his widow, who was placed under bond of three thousand pounds sterling, indicative of a very considerable estate for those times.

GAMALIEL WHITING the sixth child of Charles Whiting
and Elizabeth Bradford, was born September 17, 1727."He
held a commission in the Revolution from John Hancock and
commanded a company in the neighborhood of Boston soon
after the battle of Lexington. Two or three of his sons who
were old enough to carry a musket served in the Anny." In

investigate the political character of new comers to the town.
He married, June 18, 1752, Anne Gillette, daughter of Jona-
than Gillette, an early resident of Canaan, Conn. This very
prolific lady became the mother of eleven children:

He died in the island of Jamaica in the latter part of 1752 (see "Connecticut Colonial Records", vol. X, p. 577), and his will was probated in July, 1753, by his widow, who was placed under bond of three thousand pounds sterling, indicative of a very considerable estate for those times.

George died at Canaan, N. Y., March 20, 1784. Phebe
died at Canaan, April 17, 1791. She was the adopted
daughter of William Bradford Whiting and Amy, his wife,
and at the age of nine years went with the Whitings to
Canaan; where at nineteen years of age she married George
Hinsdale. Both are buried at Canaan, N. Y.

GAMALIEL WHITING the sixth child of Charles Whiting
and Elizabeth Bradford, was born September 17, 1727."He
held a commission in the Revolution from John Hancock and
commanded a company in the neighborhood of Boston soon
after the battle of Lexington. Two or three of his sons who
were old enough to carry a musket served in the Anny." In

He married, June 18, 1752, Anne Gillette, daughter of Jona-
than Gillette, an early resident of Canaan, Conn. This very
prolific lady became the mother of eleven children:

Looking for info on James Wolf Whiting aka Dr. James Whiting, born in Newport,RI, Jan 27, 1760. Looking for spouse and children. James is son of Col. John Whiting, born Aug. 3, 1719, and Philena Cogswell, born 1726. They moved back to Montville, CT in late 1760's. Col. John died in 1770 in New London, CT. James Wolf's sister, Elizabeth Whiting Leffingwell was named as guardian; but her husband, Daniel, died shortly after.
It is believed James went then to live with other relatives. The next information we have is that James Wolf Whiting was a doctor in Norwich in 1790's. He petitioned and was granted permission by Town Assembly to open a hospital for the first permitted small pox innoculations.
James Wolf Whiting died in Jewett City on Sep. 14, 1823, and is intered in the Pachaug Cemetary on Rte. 138 in that town. He had a brother also named James who died young, the name was reused. Would appreciate any information. We think he may have gone to Canada during the Revolutionary War.

History of Norwich

Laurel Hill.

Along the river, running down toward Brewster's Neck, were two farms;.
the upper belonging to .John Downs, and the lower to Joseph Elderkin.
These farms, after several times changing owners, were purchased at dif-
ferent periods, the upper by Jabez Perkins, and the lower by Nathaniel
Backus. Capt. Perkins bought also the Fitch farm and other lands in the
neighborhood. His wife was the daughter of Mr. Backus, and on the
decrease of the latter in 1787, the Elderkin farm fell to her by inheritance,
which brought the eastern bank of the river for a considerable distance
into the ownship of Capt. Perkins and his wife. The only child of this
couple that lived to maturity was Mary, the wife of Capt. Daniel Whjt-
ing, and the two children of his daughter dying without issue, the estate,
agreeably to the will of Capt. Perkins reverted in fee simple to their
father, Captain Whiting.
The Indian name of this tract WaS Shipscattuck. In l860 the road to Poquetannock was called the Shipscattuck path. The original grantees in
this quarter were Robert Roath, Owen Wi1liams, Josiah Rockwell, Benjamin
Fitch, John Eldcrkin: these were Shipscattuck proprietors.. At a
later period the dwcllings of Thomas Danforth and Micheal Pepper were
said to be at These grants were all in East or Long Society. which in 1786 was dis-
severed from Norwich by legislative authority and annexed to Preston.
Perkins and Whiting were the proprietors on this bank of the river for
more than sixty years. A large proportion of the land was rugged and
unptoductive; it was therefore but partially cleared and cultivated. After
coming into the possession of Capt. Whiting, the only dwelling was A
small farm-house pleasantly situated on tile river, but with no road lead-
ing to it except. a pent-way through the woods. The farm-house has since
expanded into the costly and eccentric villa of Sunnyside.
