Colonel Whiting, Mrs. Fremont's father, Was one of
the most wealthy and prominent men of his day in
Virginia; he was a leading member of the House of 'Bur-
gesses, and during the Revolution was President of the
Naval Board at Williamsburgh (then the seat of govern-
ment), officially the most exalted position, at that time,
in the Colony.* Prior to the revolution he had been
king's attorney.

Elizabeth Sewall (Seawell) married, had five children--lst Thomas
Whiting & by him [number left blank]' 2nd Samtl Cary & by him had
four children, dying left Sam'l Cary guardian to her children by both
marriages.
Sam'l Cary was sued by the five children of the 1st marriage for their
father's estate.2:
Anne Beverley Whiting, the youngest child of ThomasWhiting and
Elizabeth Sewall (Seawell], was but six months old at the time of her
father's death. Consequently her share of the property and slaves which
should have increased greaty before her coming of age was the most
defenceless in the hands of Sam'l Cary.
Mrs. Lowry (Catherine Whiting) was married when Mrs Elizabeth
Sewall (Seawell] Cary died,l and the stepfather's home being disagreeable
from the vexations of law suits, Anne Wfiiti!ll went to her sister
Catherine to live.
Catherine (Mrs. Lowry) arranged a marriage between her sister &:

The Whiting history is so confused in its different accounts, it is better not to rely on it. There is no doubt that (Wh8) Thomas Whiting married (Th6) Elizabeth Thruston (1740-l766) as she is mentioned. in the will of her father (Th7) Colonel John Thruston in 1763. None of his grandchi1dren were mentioned.
The will is in the Robert Reude (?Reade) Thruston collection at the Filson C1ub, Louisville, Kentucky.
The Beverley ancestors are not in the index, but should be added.
