When she was young, she used to sneak pet lambs into her bedroom on the farm. She graduated valedictorian at Spring Valley, Wisconsin High School. She had a B.A. in Journalism and an M. A. in International Relations from the University of Minnesota. She was a housewife, very active in volunteer and church work, and a "great Mother".
