In the pioneer section of Warsaw Village cemetery there remains
a marble slab to William Whiting, born at Hartford, Conn, in ",1758s>
who died at Warsaw, March 22, I8I4.9, aged 90 years. The Wyoming
County Mirror, recording his death, stated that at the commencement
of the Revolution he lived in Connecticut, near Hartford. In 1776,
he went to New York in the militia company of Lt. George Kellogg and
Col. Chester. In April 1777> he enlisted for three years and served
under Capt. Elisha Kimball, Col. John Chandler and Col. Joseph Hoit.
He was in the battles of Germantown, Ft. Mifflin and Monmouth.
During 1781 and 1782, he was in the team service under Capt; John
Waters, Conductor of Teams.
After the Revolution, he removed with several children to Granville, N.Y., then to Hampton and from there to Warsaw in 1821. He
was an honorable man and retained his faculties up to near the end
and the time of his death. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
His wife, the mother of his children, was Abigail Flower, who died
Aug. 25, 1832, aged 73 years. One of his sons, Nathan Whiting, and
a brother-in-law, Col. Chauncey Sheldon,were among the Americans who
joined the Canadian patriots in 1837» were captured and banished by
the British Government to Van Dieman's Land. They were pardoned and
returned to the United States some few years before the father's
death. DAR application papers state that Mr. Whiting saw three years
Revolutionary service as Private under Capt. Nehemiah Rice in Col.
Chandler's 8th Connecticut Regt. In I8l8, he apnlied for a pension
which was allowed. After his first wife's death, the old veteran
married three more times; his second wife, Lucinda Whiting, his
brother's widow, died Sept. 10, 1838, aged 67; his third was Mrs.
Phebe Rich, widow of Peter Rich, and his fourth, the widow of Lyman
Noble.

The following summer they were visited by an uncle of our subject, Demmon Whiting. and Mr. Sheldon relates what was to him, a three-year old boy, a most interesting experience, the killing of a woodehnck. The animal was discovered in a field of clover not far from the house and his uncle securing a handspike or billet of wood which was used in rolling logs together, preparatory to burnmg them, managed to get between the chuck and his hole and droye him in a cleft in a rock near by, from which there was no escape

Dec 1827 in NY his father was born in New Hampshire I do not know who his parents were and have a hard time trying to match him up with any of the typical Whiting lines I have found. Hello Scott, There may or may not be a connection here. This is what I came up with using Calhoun Co., MI and the name Anson L. Whiting: I've been researching Jeremiah Bumpus Whiting (Baumpheous, Bompasse?) 1774 - 1850. He was born in Litchfield Co., CT, married in MA, practiced medicine in VT and NY and died in Lee, Calhoun, MI. He settled for several years in the Spafford, NY area. We have found other Whitings in the Spafford/Scott area and think he might have come to NY with other family members. My late cousin's research on Spafford found a Thomas Whiting who came to Spafford in 1811with a wife and 8 children. There was also an Anson L. (Lord) Whiting who was born in Litchfield Co. CT in 1807 and came to Spafford when he was 4 years old. (I think this was from A History of Spafford 1903 by Capt. George Knapp Collins). Perhaps Anson is a family name? There was also mention of a Theophilus Whiting who was born in England and settled in CT. >From other sources, there was a Thomas Whiting (about 1777) of Spafford, NY, son of Theophilus. Thomas is buried in Onondaga Hill Cemetery, and had a son Anson Lord Whiting. The county lines have changed several times, so there may be information in Onondaga, Cayuga and/or Cortland Counties. Hope this is of some help. I'd appreciate more information on Jeremiah B. Whiting. Who were his parents and siblings? (I have some guesses but nothing verified.) While researching my Timmons ancestors at the Liverpool, Onondaga County, New
York, public library, I found a book "The Liverpool Legend", by Thetis (Mrs.
Edward F). Group, the Village Historian at the time of publication in 1962.
One chapter contained information about the Patriot's War. It stated from
recollections of the late A. H. Crawford "During the Patriot War of 1838-1839
Liverpool contributed both men and means in aid of the Patriot cause." They
belonged to an organization called The Hunters, named for the famous Canadian
rebel who had conceived the idea for the liberation of Canada from the
British. A Hunters Lodge was organized and was turning out bullets for
arming the force to cross the St Lawrence River.

On Sunday, November 10, the steamer United States set out from Oswego with a
large number of men, and then stopped at Sackets Harbor where more men, many
of them from Watertown boarded. General J. Ward Birge of Cazenovia (in
Madison Co.) met them at Ogdensburg, promising 20-40,000 American recruits;
however, less than 200 were landed near Prescott. General Birge promised to
return to Ogdensburg and bring back thousands more volunteers but did not
return. In the fight that followed the Canadian militia fought against
them--not a single Canadian joined the Americans. "The American saviors of
Canada had found Canada unwilling to be saved." The small band of Americans
was captured at confined at Fort Henry near Kingston.

The book states that the following men from Liverpool were killed: William
McKellop, James Pease, James Miller, Leman Leach and Nathan Coffin. Banished
to Tasmania were Nathan Whiting, David Allen and "High" Loop.

Also written is that one historical record states that Chauncey Sheldon made
a Masonic signal of distress as he was on his knees waiting for the signal to
fire. This saved his life and that of Nathan Whiting. "Nathan Whiting's
wife, Rhoda, by law, was free to marry again. She married Richard Goodwin who
later died and when Whiting returned years later from banishment to
Liverpool, he and Rhoda were reunited."

Note that Roda Toles apparently had a daughter, Julia, by Mr. Goodwin while
Nathan Whiting was in Tasmania. By the time of the 1855 Census Rhoda had
died and Julia was living with Nathan Whiting, her half-sister, Mary Whiting
and the Timons family.

I am not related to Nathan Whiting. I am a descendent of James Timmons. I
have a cousin who is a descendent of Nathan and Rhoda Whiting, and Nicholas
and Jane Timmons. She is not on the net and has asked me to find out more
information about her side of the Timmons family.

There is quite a bit more information in the book but I was unable to find
out if the book was copywrited. An account about Niles Szoltevki Von
