p, 331, gives the following account of him:

“William Whiting represented Hartford in the General
Court from 1710 to 1715 and speaker in 1714. In 1693 he
went as Captain of a company of whites and Indians to Maine.
"In 1705 he held the title of Major.
"In 1709 he bore the rank of Colonel and led a body of
horse and infantry into the county of Hampshire to repel the
French and Indians. In 1710 he was in command of the troops
at Port Royal in 1711 in the expedition against Canada.
Colonel Whiting was sheriff of Hartford County in 1722.

Rev. Samuel Russell, second son of the Rev. John and Rebecca (Newberry) Russell, born Nov. 4, 1660, graduated at Harvard in 1681.
After graduation, for a while he taught the grammar school

On the 12th of September, 1687, he was called to the pastorate of the church at Branford, Connecticut, and there he served for the remainder of his life. "He became the second father of the town. His ministry, peaceful and prosperous, was prolonged forty-four years, though he was disabled from preaching during the last six years of his life."
"Tradition makes it probable that the proposed meeting [for considering the establishing of Yale College] took place in the south parlor of the house of the Rev. Samuel Russel, and that the few then assembled, by engaging to give books from their scanty libraries as a nucleus of College property, constituted themselves the founders of the institution, and in this capacity presented their petition for a charter to the General Assembly the next week"* [second week of October, 1701]. He was one of the most active supporters of the project and became one of the trustees of the new college.
In May, 1699, he preached the election sermon and received the thanks of the General Assembly.
Rev. Samuel Russell married Abigail Whiting, born 1666, daughter of the Rev. John and Sybil (Collins) Whiting of Hartford, Connecticut.
He died June 25, 1731. His widow Abigail, died May 7, 1733.

John Russell, eldest son of the Rev. Samuel and Abigail (Whiting) Russell was born January 24, 1687, graduated at Yale in its first class, that of 1704, and lived in Branford, Connecticut, where he was one of its most influential citizens. He was town clerk for more than twenty years, justice of the peace for nearly thirty years, and deputy to the General Assembly for forty-five sessions, serving as speaker of the lower house in 1751.
He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Militia, and was for the last twenty-four years of his life a deacon of the First Church in Branford. He married December 17, 1707, Sarah Trowbridge, born November 26, 1686, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Winston) Trowbridge of New Haven, Connecticut, who died January 23, 1761. He died

Hon. Wm. Whiting, the American ancestor of the Connecticut branch of the Whiting family, came to New England in 1633, and resided for three years in Newtown (now Cambridge), removing thence with Rev. Thomas Hooker and others to Hartford, Conn., of which he was an original proprietor. Frequent mention is made of him as "one of the fathers of the colony." He was referred to in the town records as "William Whiting, Gentleman." He was several times representative to the General Court; was one of the Magistrates in 1642, was chosen Treasurer of the Colony in 1641, and continued in that office till his death. By his wife Susanna, he had issue, John.

Samuel Whiting and Elizabeth Adam

Samuel3 (John2 William1) the youngest child of John and Sybil Whiting was born on 22 Apr 1670 in Hartford, CT. He received his early education from his father and afterwards moved to Norwich, CT where he finished his education for the ministry under the direction of Reverend James Fitch. Soon after this apprenticeship he followed his father's footsteps and went into the ministry. It should be noted here that while researching our heritage, we've come across many occasions where records and articles have confused the two Reverend Samuel Whitings. Our Reverend Samuel Whiting resided in Windham Connecticut and Reverend Samuel Whiting who married Elizabeth St. John resided in Lynn Massachusetts.

Shortly after his apprenticeship, sometime around 1692, our Samuel was called upon to be the first minister at Windham. "As an inducement he was promised œ50 annually, and a dwelling to be eighteen feet square and two stories high! After he was ordained at Windham December 4, 1700, his salary increased to œ100 with a supply of fuel." In a record kept by himself Samuel wrote, "I preached my first sermon at Windham, from the first verse of Genesis, on the first day of January, 1692-3. I was ordained at Windham, on the 4th day of December, 1700." (Autobiography of W.S. Tyler)

The life and ministry of Samuel Whiting is described in a book published by the town of Windham in celebration of its bicentennial. The book describes Windham's first century during which the Whitings were a distinguished family, describing our Samuel as "a man of uncommon fervor in the pulpit, who mingled greatly with the people in their everyday transactions and who had large interests in real estate."

Down through generations of Whitings and their Allied families there have been many notable individuals and historical connections. When our Samuel married Elizabeth Adams our Whiting heritage was forever bonded with the descendents of the "Mayflower". Elizabeth was born on 23 Feb 1680 in Norfolk, Mass and was the daughter of Reverend William Adams, of Dedham, Massachusetts. Her mother, Alice Bradford, was the daughter of Deputy Governor William Bradford, and the granddaughter of Governor Bradford of the Mayflower. Samuel and Elizabeth were married in Norwich, on Sept. 14, 1696 and a passage taken from their marriage ceremony gave the following quote: "This marriage gives beautiful ascent. It starts with the 'Mayflower' through the Bradfords and takes in the great men of the Adams family, and coming down reaches descendants who give far more to life than they demand." (New England Families Genealogical Memorials).

As a clergyman, Samuel's growing reputation and sincere dedication to the community helped spawn one of three early religious revivals in colonial Connecticut. "In 1721 there occurred a remarkably precious and powerful revival in Windham, under the ministry of the Rev. Samuel Whiting, in which eighty persons were added to the church in that town." (Congregational Church of Windham) Also in the same year, (1721) while Samuel & Elizabeth were residing in Windham, they visited family or friends in Stonnington, Connecticut where his name appears in the records of their church. The following excerpts were taken from those records: Baptised: June 23, 1721 Mr. Samuel Whiting, Pastor of ye Church of Christ at Windham Preacht. A Lecture, and baptized Daniel, son of Daniel Denison; Oliver, son of James Babcock; and Benadam, son of William Denison. (History of the 1st Congregational Church Stoningtin, Connecticut).

Samuel and Elizabeth, much like their parents and grandparents, held considerable amount of real estate. In one transaction we've researched, a Thomas Huntington, granted a huge parcel of "wilderness land in the county of Hartford" to Samuel and Elizabeth, a holding he kept until his death. During their 29-year marriage, Samuel and Elizabeth had 14 children. Six of those children, Samuel, Joseph, Lidea, Martha, Mary and Eliphalet died at an early age. Samuel was 18 when he died at sea, and Joseph died in Windham in 1721 at the age of 17. Lidea, a twin to Sybil, died one day after she was born on May 05, 1708. Martha was only 9 when she died. (Her headstone can be found in the Windham Cemetery) Mary Whiting married Thomas Clap and we believe she died of childbirth complications. Mary died at age 24, less than 2 weeks after giving birth to her son Saltonstall. Eliphalet Whiting died in Windham, CT just a few months after his 21st birthday.

Sixteen months after their last child, Nathan Whiting, was born Samuel Whiting died at Enfield, while visiting his cousin Reverend Nathaniel Collins, on September 27, 1725. (Mr. Collins was also his brother-in-law, having married Alice Adams the sister of his wife.) Family records state Samuel was buried in Hartford, but his actual grave site is located in the Enfield Street Cemetery, Enfield Connecticut. Samuel was 55 years old when he died. Samuel's headstone inscription at Enfield Street Cemetery reads: Samuel, Rev, minister of Church of Windham, d 27 Sep 1725, ae 55 yrs.

Twelve years after Samuel died, the 56 year old Elizabeth married Reverend Samuel Niles of Braintree, Mass., in December 2, 1737. After Reverend Niles died, (May 1, 1762), she moved to New Haven where she lived with her youngest son, Col. Nathan Whiting, and died on December 21, 1766, two months before her 86th birthday.
Children of SAMUEL WHITING and ELIZABETH ADAMS

ANNE WHITING was born 2 Jan 1697/98 in Windham, CT., and died 18 Sep 1778 in Lebanon, CT. She married JOSEPH FITCH on 29 Dec 1721 in Lebanon, CT. During their 20-year marriage Anne and Joseph had six children all born in Lebanon. We have found no records indicating Anne, who was 43 years old at the time of Joseph's death, never remarried. Anne (Whiting) Fitch, died in Lebanon at 80 years of age in 1778.

SAMUEL WHITING was born on 20 Feb 1699/00 in Windham, CT., and died at age 18 in 1718 when he was lost at sea.

ELIZABETH WHITING was born on 11 Feb 1701/02 in Windham, CT., and died 2 Sep 1730 in New London, CT. She married WILLIAM GAGER 1 Nov 1725 in New London, CT. Elizabeth died two and half years after their youngest child was born at the young age of 28, and is probably buried in New London. During their 5-year marriage Elizabeth and William had two children born in New London.

WILLIAM WHITING was born on 22 Jan 1703/04 in Windham, CT and died 1787 probably in Norwich, CT. He married ANNA RAYMOND on 5 Mar 1723/24 in Norwich, CT. During their 49-year marriage William and Anna had 6 children all born in Norwich. He later married ALATHEA (WOODWORTH) SMITH on 8 Mar 1774 in Norwich, CT.

JOSEPH WHITING was born on 27 Feb 1704/05 in Windham, CT., and died on 1 Mar 1721/22, while residing in Windham, CT. Joseph died unmarried.

SYBIL WHITING was born on 5 May 1708 in Windham, CT., and died 7 Aug 1755 in Windham. She married JOHN BACKUS on 12 May 1725 in Windham, CT. During their 30-year marriage Sybil and John had 12 children all born in Windham CT.

LIDEA WHITING was born on 5 May 1708 in Windham, CT., and is believed to be Sybil's twin. Lidea died as an infant in May 1708.

MARTHA WHITING was born on 12 Mar 1709/10 in Windham, CT., and died at age 9 on 29 Jun 1719, Windham, CT.

MARY WHITING was born on 24 Nov 1712 in Windham, CT., and died there on 9 Aug 1736 at the age 24. She married Reverend THOMAS CLAP on 23 Nov 1727 in Windham, CT. During their 8+ years of marriage, Mary & Thomas had 5 children, all born in Windham CT.

ELIPHALET WHITING was born on 8 Apr 1715 in Windham, CT., and died there on 9 Aug 1736. According to Autobiography of W.S. Tyler, Eliphalet died unmarried.

ELISHA WHITING was born on 17 Jan 1716/17 in Windham, CT., and died on 15 Feb 1805.

Rev. Nathaniel Collins, son of Rev. Nathaniel Collins, of Middletown Connecticut; graduated at Harvard College, in 1697: was the first settled pastor of the church in Enfield, Connecticut 1699 to 1724: was town clerk of Enfield 1729 to 1735. He married (1st) 7 June 1700/1701 Alice Adams daughter of Rev. William Adams of Dedham and great granddaughter of Gov. William Bradford of the Mayflower. She died 19 Feb. 1735, in her 53d year (gravestone). He married (2d) Rachel Smith daughter of Samuel Smith of Glastonbury, Connecticut before 22 June 1737. She outlived him. The land records of Enfield and Glastonbury, CT, indicate that the last twenty years of his life he resided in Glastonbury. He died 31 Dec 1756 in his 80th year and is buried by his first wife. Nathaniel Parsons, son of Philip and Anna Parsons, was born at Enfield, March 11, 1709-10. He or a son of the same name fought as a soldier in the French and Indian War in 1758 in Lieutenant David Parson's company, under General Phinehas Lyman, Third Company, First Regiment. He bought land on the Scantic River, January 26, 1728-29; and various other property at Enfield. Another Nathaniel Parsons appears to have lived at Enfield at the same time. He moved to Somers, Connecticut, and his wife Mary died there in her eighty-second year. They had a son, Stephen, born February 20, 1730-31. Nathaniel Parsons, son of Philip Parsons, married Alice Collins, January 29, 1735-36.

Alice (Collins) Parsons was born March 14, 1716, the daughter of the Rev. Nathaniel Collins, minister of the Enfield Church, who was graduated from Harvard College in 1697; married, in 1701, Alice Adams. She was the daughter of the Rev. William Adams, of Dedham, Massachusetts; and died February 19, 1755. The Rev. Nathaniel Collins was born June 13, 1681, died February 6, 1758. He was the son of the Rev. Nathaniel Collins who was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, March 7, 1642, and died at Middletown, Connecticut, December 28, 1684; was graduated at Harvard College in 1660; and was ordained minister at Middletown, Connecticut, November 4, 1666. He was married August 3, 1664, to Mary Whiting, daughter of William Whiting. Deacon Edward Collins, father of the Rev. Nathaniel Collins, Sr., appearing in Cambridge as early as 1638; was deacon of the first church there. He was admitted a freeman, May 13, 1640; lived many years on Governor Cradock's plantation, which he finally purchased. He was deputy to the General Court for many years; died in Charleston, April 9, 1689; aged eighty-six years.

Alice (Adams) Collins was a descendant of Henry Adams, the immigrant, of Braintree, Massachusetts, ancestor of John Adams, and John Quincy Adams, presidents of the United States. Alice (Bradford) Adams, wife of the Rev. William Adams, was the daughter of Major William Bradford and of Alice (Richards) Bradford, a granddaughter of Governor William Bradford, and his wife, Alice (Carpenter) Bradford. Governor Bradford, the most distinguished of the "Mayflower" Pilgrims, was a son of William Bradford, of Yorkshire, England. Children of Nathaniel and Alice (Collins) Parsons, born in Enfield: Nathaniel; Asa, born February 4, 1742; Edward, born in 1745; died in Springfield; Ebenezer, born in 1748; William, born in 1750; Shubael, of further mention; and Alice.

Rev. Nathaniel Collins was the son of Edward and his wife Mary England

On the ship, The Defence, the Rev. Shepherd with several parishioners, including John Russell and Roger Harlakendon, set sail for New England in 1635. Accompanying them in this settlement was Mr. Edward Collins.

Edward Collins went on to establish himself in nearby Medford, where he acquired Gov. Craddock's massive estate, and later sold 1600 acres of his plantation to Richard Russell. The first preserved documentation from England that Daniel Markham, born in June 1641, in Earls Colne, was the same as the Cambridge, MA. Resident is provided by the will of a Daniel Collins, written in 1639 and probated in 1643. In it, he leaves fifty pounds British currency to "the wife of Cousin Markham." In the same will, he mentions his brother, Samuel, Vicar of Braintree, and Edward Collins, "now in New England," and names several children of Edward Collins.

He also mentioned his mother was buried at Braintree. The town of Braintree is in Essex, next to Earls Colne. Daniel Collins referred to "the lease of the Dolphin." There is property named, "The Dolphin, in Halstead, which also borders Earls Colne. This same property is mentioned in the records of Earls Coln in association with other plots of ground, which have been identified with James Markham, which also was held by a John Collins prior to James Markham.

In 1670, Daniel Markham, then also of Medford, MA, was deposed to testify on behalf of Edward Collins, plaintiff, involving an alleged theft of a mare and colt by a neighbor. During his testimony, he, Daniel, on several occasions referred to Mr. Collins as his uncle. The court reporter mentioned that the deponent, Daniel Markham, "was aged 25 years or thereabouts," which is consistent with the christening records of Earls Colne, which would put him at the age of 27 at this time. (Ref: Court records of Middlesex County, MA)

By his own words, as recorded in the MA Court records, Daniel Markham identified his uncle Edward Collins. From England, Daniel Collins, in his will, identified his cousin Markham (referring to James Markham and his wife Martha Collins) as his relative, Edward Collins, in New England. And, in Earls Colne, Essex, there is a documentation of the marriage of James Markham and Martha Collins, who had a son, Daniel, born in 1641.

The church around which Captain Abbey beat the long roll was completed in the January preceding, and stood near the present church. It was used as a church for the town until 1849, when it was bought by the town and moved to the west side of the street, where it now stands and has been used as a town hall ever since. A memorial to Captain Abbey and others of the family is about to be erected by Mr. Alden Freeman with his mother and sisters.

The Abbey Memorial will be on the Green in Enfield, on the site of the church out of which Captain Abbey drummed the congregation at the Lexington Alarm. The actual site of the old church is just in front of the present edifice. The design calls for a marble statue on a pedestal surrounded by four marble seats in the Greek style. On the backs of these seats are inscriptions commemorating the achievements of some of the best known descendants of the Abbey family, in the fields of war, literature and science. The sculptor, Sherry E. Fry, used as a model for the face and figure for the statue of Captain Abbey, a daguerreotype of his grandson, Seth Alden Abbey, taken at the same age.

Daniel C. French, sculptor of the "Minute Men" unveiled at Concord Bridge in 1875, has taken great interest in the work of Mr. Fry, and loaned him the simple Colonial suit used for the presentation of Captain Abbey.

The following is an extract from a letter written by Seth Alden Abbey to his son, Henry G. Abbey, dated June 15, 1872, telling something of Thomas Abbey: When a small boy, I was frequently at his house for a week at a time and have heard him tell many a thrilling tale of his hairbreadth escapes, hardships, sufferings, etc. During the French War he received a commission as Ensign in the Colonial troops and saw considerable service against the French and Indians. At the breaking out of the Revolution, a volunteer company was formed in his neighborhood and he was elected their captain and they were soon ordered to join Colonel Willett's Regiment in New York. I have heard him say, frequently, that he had chances of promotion, often, but his men would not consent to his leaving them. When a boy I saw many of his old soldiers who had served during the war; and the neighbors were as particular in addressing any of them, in giving them their title, as Corporal such a one, or Sergeant such a one, as they would be in addressing a General. Thomas Abbey died in 1811, and was as anxious for a fight with old England, which was then much talked of, just before his death, as in his younger days. He died suddenly with apoplexy.

Samuel Morse Whiting
Samuel Morse Whiting, who engaged in mercantile pursuits in Altona, was born in that town on the 11th of August, 1857, and traces his ancestry back to William and Susannah Whiting, who settled in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1632, having come from Boxford, Suffolk, England. William Whiting was a very wealthy merchant who had received a patent for land at Sevanscot with Lord Say and Lord Brook. He served as treasurer of Connecticut colony from 1642 to 1647 and died in July of the latter year. His wife passed away July 8, 1673. Their son Joseph Whiting , who was born October 2, 1640 and died October 8, 1717, was married in 1676 to Anna Allyn, who was born August 18, 1652, and died March 3, 1735. She was a daughter of Colonel John and Ann (Smith) Allyn. Her father, who was secretary of the Connecticut colony for twenty-eight years, was born February 24, 1630, and died November 11, 1696. John Whiting, son of Joseph and Anna (Allyn) Whiting, was born December 15, 1693, and died February 12, 1766. He married Jerusha Lord, who was born in 1699 and died in 1776. Their son Allyn Whiting was a soldier of the Revolutionary war, being a private in Major Sheldon’s'Regiment of Light Horse and Colonel Enos’ Regiment on the Hudson. He was born June 23, ‘1740, and died February 9, 1818. He and his wife Elizabeth joined the church at West Hartford in 1758. Their son Joseph Whiting was born in August, 1763, and died February 16, 1842. He was ‘married in 1784 to Mary Goodwin, who was born in 1766 and died in 1835. Their son Allyn Whiting, who was the grandfather of our subject, was born July 4, 1788, and died in Aurora, Illinois, November 3, 1871. He married Amanda Alford, who was born June 6, 1796, and died May 3, 1849. Their son Samuel Phelps Whiting, the father of our subject, was born September 19, 1821, in Hartford, Connecticut, and was married, in Litchfield, that state, May 28, 1845, to Miss Lucretia Morse who was born in Litchfield, August 22, 1823, and died April 5, 1901. She was a daughter of Jacob and Harriet Morse, who were married March 14, 1821. Her mother was born March 17, 1800, and died February 28, 1882, in Litchfield. Her father was born in that city March 6, 1792, and was a son of Levi and Thalia (Sanford) Morse. Levi Morse was born in Litchfield, September 19, 1775, and died January 20, 1841. His wife was born October 26, 1776, and died July 16, 1854. Mrs. Lucretia (Morse) Whiting belonged to a very prominent old New England family and a monument has been erected which bears the following inscription: “To the memory of seven Puritans who emigrated from England to America in 1635-9. John Morse, born 1604, settled at New Haven and died at Wallingford, Connecticut, 1707, aged one hundred and three years. Samuel Morse, born 1585, settled at Dedham, 1636, died at Medfield, 1654. Joseph Morse, settled at Ipswich, where he died 1646. Anthony Morse, born at Marlboro, England, 1606, died at Newbury, 1686. William Morse, born 1608, died 1685. Robert and Peter, their brothers, settled and died in New Jersey.”
Samuel Phelps Whiting, the father of our subject, conducted a meat market in his native city until coming to Victoria, Illinois, in 1851, with his brother Richard and family. They engaged in mercantile business for two years and at the end of that time Samuel P. Whiting removed to Altona, where he opened'a meat market. In addition to that business he also engaged in the raising and shipping of cattle, horses and hogs, becoming one of the leading men engaged in that enterprise in the locality. He disposed of his stock in Peoria, which was the nearest market. His was one of the first frame houses built in Altona and was situated on Main street, opposite the present place of business of Samuel M. Whiting. In 1878 he admitted his son Samuel as a business partner and subsequently purchased and edited for five years Altona’s only newspaper —the Altona Journal. He took an active interest in public affairs and was a supporter of the republican party. After a useful and well spent life he passed away in March, 1907. In his family were four children: Samuel M.- of this review; Della, the wife of A. H. Miles, a druggist of Des Moines, Iowa; Inez, the wife of A. G. Edwards, a druggist and ex city treasurer of Omaha, Nebraska; and Angie, the wife of Ernest R. Smith, of Palo Alto, California.
Samuel M. Whiting has been engaged in the meat market business since he finished school at the age of fifteen years. In addition to conducting his market he has also bought and shipped cattle to the near-by markets. For one year he ran a restaurant and from 1892-to 1897 he conducted a meat market in Galesburg but then returned to Altona. In his dealings he has maintained the strictest business integrity, realizing that satisfied customers are the best advertisement. He keeps in touch with the trade, knows what the market offers and carries a good line of meats, while his prices are reasonable and his treatment of his patrons always courteous.
Mr. Whiting was married to Miss Ella M. Pierce, of Walnut Grove township whose birth occurred January 5, 1860. She is a daughter of Mathew Pierce, who came to Altona from New York state when very young and is now living retired at Galesburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Whiting four children have been born: Claude N., an electrician, who married Jennie Nelson and is residing in Cairo, Illinois; Harry S., the assistant cashier of the State Bank at Victoria, Illinois, who married Lillian Wenstrom, of Altona, and they have a little daughter, Lucile, born January 11, 1912; Inez, who is engaged in teaching music and is residing at home; and Mathew Pierce, who since his graduation from school has assisted his father in the meat market.
Mr. Whiting is an active and enthusiastic republican and has frequently been elected to ofiice. He has served as village clerk and has four times been elected supervisor, his first election being in 1889. For nine years he served as county committeeman and during that time did much active work in furthering the interests of the republican party. Practically his whole life has been spent in Altona, where he has the distinction of being one of the two oldest business men. He occupies a place of prominence as one of the energetic business men, succeeding in what he undertakes by reason of his forceful character and his strict conformity to modern business methods.

COLONEL JOHN WHITING, son of Joseph and Anna (Allyn) Whiting, was born in Hartford, December 15, 1693. He succeeded his father in 1717 as treasurer of the colony, holding the office for thirty-two years. He was a merchant in Hartford and a man of wealth and standing.

He commanded a regiment in the French and Indian wars. He died February 12, 1766. He married Jerusha, daughter of Richard Lord of Hartford, grandson of Thomas Lord, one of the first settlers of the town of Hartford. She was born February 25,1699 and died October 21, 1776 in Windsor, Connecticut.

Children of John and Jerusha born at Hartford are: (1) Joseph, born January 1715, died February 1715; (2) Abigail, born July 24, 1718, died December 21, 172; (3) Jerusha, born September 16,1720, married Daniel Skinner. She died July6, 1803. (4) Joseph, born February 14, 172, died November 1725; (5) Anna, born February 16, 1724, married Lieutenant Benjamin Colton, died May 31, 1762; (6) John, born June 17, 1727; (7) Mary, born August 25, 1729, married John Skinner; (8) Susan, born February 10, 1732; (9) Sarah, born April 6, 1734; (10) William, born October 12, 1736, died October 19, 1775; (11) Allyn, born June 23, 1740, died February 9, 1818.

He was a soldier in the revolution in John Skinner's company, Major Sheldon's regiment of light horse, in Captain Ozias Bissell's company, Colonel Roger Enos' regiment in New York in 1778, resided at West Hartford, Married Elizabeth _________ with whom he joined the church at Hartford; (12) Elizabeth born June 25, 1743 and died August 14, 1750.

He commanded a regiment in the French and Indian wars. He was Captain of the Troop of Horse in Hartford County in May 1730. He was made Colonel of the First Regiment in Oct., 1741, and a member of the Council of War in 1745.

Saturday morning, May 14,1994 we left Windsor Locks, Conn., to drive to Somersworth, New Hampshire to visit our daughter Linda. We stopped at Windsor and visited the Palisado Cemetery, an "old and new cemetery" behind the United Church of Christ (Congregational). This building was erected in 1794, but the organization is among the oldest gathered congregations in North America. The cemetery contains tombstones dating from the 1600s. The first stone we found was that of Jerusha Lord Whiting, (see notes on her for inscription). Beside this stone tablet was an all white stone for Col. John Whiting.

We also visited the Windsor Historical Society, 96 Palisado Ave. It is the site of the Lt. Walter Fyler house, built in 1640, one of the oldest frame houses in Connecticut. We were surprised to find it open on Saturday morning. The gentleman who opened the door was very cordial, and assisted in helping us find records of 'cemetery inscription' of some of my ancestors. I also met a lady from Charleston, South Carolina who was working on Matthew Allyn's line.
Matthew Allyn went to Windsor after the founding of Hartford. His name is on the Founders's Monument in the gold Street cemetery in Hartford.

COLONEL JOHN WHITING

Col. John Whiting was born on Dec. 15, 1693 in Hartford, Connecticut and died on Feb. 12, 1766 in Hartford, Connecticut. He was the son of Joseph and Anne Allyn Whiting. Col. John married Jerusha Lord who was born on Feb. 25, 1699 at Hartford, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Richard Lord III and Abigail Warren Lord. She died on Oct. 21, 1776 in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut.

Col. John succeeded his father in 1717 as treasurer of the colony, holding the office for thirty-two years. He was a merchant in Hartford and a man of wealth and standing. He commanded a regiment in the French and Indian Wars.

1.) According to Cutter p.1665 " he was a man of wealth and standing, and that Col. John Whiting commanded a regiment in the French and Indian Wars(1754-1760)." Also in "The Journal of Constantine Hardy, in the Crown Point Expedition of 1759" there is mention of Col. Whiting's Regiment.

John Whiting succeeded his father in 1717 as Treasurer of the Colony of Connecticut, retaining the office thirty-two years. He was a merchant in Hartford and a man of property. Captain of the Troop of Horse in Hartford County, May 1730.Colonel of the First Regiment October 1741. Member of the Council of War 1745. Col. Whiting died February 12, 1766.

COLONEL JOHN WHITING, son of Joseph and Anna (Allyn) Whiting, was born in Hartford, December 15, 1693. He succeeded his father in 1717 as treasurer of the colony, holding the office for thirty-two years. He was a merchant in Hartford and a man of wealth and standing.

He commanded a regiment in the French and Indian wars. He died February 12, 1766. He married Jerusha, daughter of Richard Lord of Hartford, grandson of Thomas Lord, one of the first settlers of the town of Hartford. She was born February 25,1699 and died October 21, 1776 in Windsor, Connecticut.

Children of John and Jerusha born at Hartford are: (1) Joseph, born January 1715, died February 1715; (2) Abigail, born July 24, 1718, died December 21, 172; (3) Jerusha, born September 16,1720, married Daniel Skinner. She died July6, 1803. (4) Joseph, born February 14, 172, died November 1725; (5) Anna, born February 16, 1724, married Lieutenant Benjamin Colton, died May 31, 1762; (6) John, born June 17, 1727; (7) Mary, born August 25, 1729, married John Skinner; (8) Susan, born February 10, 1732; (9) Sarah, born April 6, 1734; (10) William, born October 12, 1736, died October 19, 1775; (11) Allyn, born June 23, 1740, died February 9, 1818.

He was a soldier in the revolution in John Skinner's company, Major Sheldon's regiment of light horse, in Captain Ozias Bissell's company, Colonel Roger Enos' regiment in New York in 1778, resided at West Hartford, Married Elizabeth _________ with whom he joined the church at Hartford; (12) Elizabeth born June 25, 1743 and died August 14, 1750.

ASHLEY, JOHN, the 3d son of David, b. in 1669; had three wives, first, Sarah Dewey, m. 1692, she d. in 1708;

he m. for his second wife, widow Mary Sheldon in 1703, she d. in 1735;

for a third wife, he m. Hannah Glover, in 1735. The second wife, widow Mary Sheldon, was the relict of Joseph Sheldon, Esq., of Suffield, (who went from Northampton ;) she was the daughter .of Joseph Whiting, of Hartford, who was the Treasurer of Connecticut, for some years. This Joseph Whiting resided a few years in Westfield, and m. Mary Pyncheon,

the only daughter of Col. John Pyncheon, of Springfield, Oct. 5, 1669; she was born Oct. 28, 1650. Mr. Whiting had by Mary Pyncheon in Westfield, Mary, b. Aug. 19, 1672, and Joseph b. 1674, who d. young.

Mr. Whiting returned to Hartford, and his wife soon after died, and he m. a daughter of Hon. John Allyn, for his second wife. This Mary Whiting, b. 1672, the grand-daughter of Col. Pyncheon, m. Joseph Sheldon, about 1694; she had a son Joseph b. in Northampton, 1695; the other children most or all of them were born in Suffield, Conn., viz: Amy, Mary, Joseph b. in 1700, (the first Joseph died,) Rachel, b. 1703; Benjamin, 1705. Joseph Sheldon d. July 2, 1708, at Boston, where he was attending the General Court as Representative of Suffield. His widow, (the grand-daughter of Col. Pyncheon,) rn. This John Ashley, who afterwards settled at Sheffield, was a great-grandson of the first Robert Ashley; he was also the great-grandson of Col. John Pyncheon, of Springfield, and of William Whiting, one of the first settlers of Hartford.

CHARLES WHITING
The second child of Colonel William Whiting and Mary
Allyn was born July 5, 1692, and was christened Charles. This
is the first time the name “Charles" appears in the Whiting]
family. The name was seldom bestowed. upon Puritan chil-
dren. This may have been due to the antipathy felt through-
out New England to the Stuart kings who played with the
destinies of the New England colonies as with pawns in a
game of chess. It became, however, a popular name with the
Whitings, and after this one child in each generation was called

“Charles." This Charles Whiting bore the title of Lieutenant.

He married January 10.1716, Elizabeth Bradford (I696-
1777), daughter of Samuel Bradford of Duxbury, Mass., and
great-granddaugbter of Governor William Bradford of Plym-
outh. Her mother. Hannah Rogers, was the descendant of
John and Priscilla Alden. In the children of these two the
blood of the Bradfords, Aldens, Rogers, Mullins, Whitings.
Pynchons and Allyns was united.

Archibald McNeil, founder of the Connecticut line, was of Branford, where in 1735 he purchased lands. Subsequently he was a prominent citizen of New Haven, was assessor in 1740 and surveyor of highways in 1746, and was conspicuous in real estate transactions. A circumstance of particular interest is his participation, as one of the "brothers" in founding the first Masonic lodge in Connecticut (now known as Hiram Lodge, No. 1), at a meeting "held at Jehiel Tuttle's in New Haven on the festival of St. John the Evangelist, 1750". This was only seventeen years after the first institution of Masonry in the American colonies (which occurred at Boston, July 3, 1733).

Archibald McNeil was successfully engaged in the trade with the West Indies, in partnership with Samuel Cook (who was named as executor of his will), and was owner and supercargo of the ship "Peggy and Molly". He died in the island of Jamaica in the latter part of 1752 (see "Connecticut Colonial Records", vol. X, p. 577), and his will was probated in July, 1753, by his widow, who was placed under bond of three thousand pounds sterling, indicative of a very considerable estate for those times.

Rev. Samuel Russell, second son of the Rev. John and Rebecca (Newberry) Russell, born Nov. 4, 1660, graduated at Harvard in 1681.
After graduation, for a while he taught the grammar school

On the 12th of September, 1687, he was called to the pastorate of the church at Branford, Connecticut, and there he served for the remainder of his life. "He became the second father of the town. His ministry, peaceful and prosperous, was prolonged forty-four years, though he was disabled from preaching during the last six years of his life."
"Tradition makes it probable that the proposed meeting [for considering the establishing of Yale College] took place in the south parlor of the house of the Rev. Samuel Russel, and that the few then assembled, by engaging to give books from their scanty libraries as a nucleus of College property, constituted themselves the founders of the institution, and in this capacity presented their petition for a charter to the General Assembly the next week"* [second week of October, 1701]. He was one of the most active supporters of the project and became one of the trustees of the new college.
In May, 1699, he preached the election sermon and received the thanks of the General Assembly.
Rev. Samuel Russell married Abigail Whiting, born 1666, daughter of the Rev. John and Sybil (Collins) Whiting of Hartford, Connecticut.
He died June 25, 1731. His widow Abigail, died May 7, 1733.

John Russell, eldest son of the Rev. Samuel and Abigail (Whiting) Russell was born January 24, 1687, graduated at Yale in its first class, that of 1704, and lived in Branford, Connecticut, where he was one of its most influential citizens. He was town clerk for more than twenty years, justice of the peace for nearly thirty years, and deputy to the General Assembly for forty-five sessions, serving as speaker of the lower house in 1751.
He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Militia, and was for the last twenty-four years of his life a deacon of the First Church in Branford. He married December 17, 1707, Sarah Trowbridge, born November 26, 1686, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Winston) Trowbridge of New Haven, Connecticut, who died January 23, 1761. He died

Nathan Whiting (b. 4 May 1724 , Windham, Connecticut - d. 1771was a soldier and merchant in Colonial America .

Whiting's parents died while he was a child, and he was raised by father's sister Mary and her husband, Reverend Thomas Clap . Whiting would graduate from Yale in 1743 while his uncle Thomas was president of the University.[1]
In 1745 Ensign Nathan Whiting joined the New England army being raised to capture Fortress Louisbourg from the French . After his service in King George's War , he became a merchant in New Haven, Connecticut . In 1750 Nathan married Mary Saltonstall. They would have eight children together.
At the start of the French and Indian War , Whiting was appointed as Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Connecticut Militia Regiment. During the Battle of Lake George on September 8 , 1755 , Col. Whiting's Regiment and the Massachusetts regiment of Col. Ephraim Williams were marching between Lake George and Fort Edward 14 miles away, when their column was ambushed by an army of French and their Indian allies. With the death of Col. Williams, Col. Whiting led the survivors back to Sir William Johnson 's camp at Lake George.[2] There the Colonial army held off the French attacks until men from Joseph Blanchard 's New Hampshire Provincial Regiment attacked the rear of the French army and captured the French commander Jean Erdman, Baron Dieskau .
In 1756 Whiting was promoted to full Colonel in the Connecticut militia . In 1757 his regiment was at Fort at Number 4 on the Connecticut River in New Hampshire guarding the frontier.
After the war Col. Whiting served in the Connecticut General Assembly until his death on 9 April 1771 .[3] He is buried at the Grove Street Cemetery, New Haven .

Samuel Whiting was a Colonel in the French War and also served in the Revolution. Dr. Samuel Whiting was a surgeon in the Army of The Revolution was taken prisoner by the British and confined in the old prison ship Wallabout where the Brooklyn Navy Yard is now located. He received his commission as a Lieutenant on the 21 of April 1780. The original commission signed by Samuel Huntington President of Congress of the United States is in possession of Dr. Fred Whiting of New York City. The Commission dates from Feb 1st 1777.

History ~ Whitingham

On the seventh day of January, 1767, a petition was presented to the lieutenant governor of New York by Nathan Whiting and twelve others for the grant of a township covering a portion of the territory then known as Cumberland.

After much delay and a re-petition on March 12, 1770, the final grantees were seven British soldiers, Colonel Whiting and six others, who recieved the grant as a reward for their fidelity in the King's service. The township, 36 square miles, thus granted and chartered was named Whitingham. The first census in 1771 reported a population of 14, increasing to 1,177 in 1900 and after some decline increased again to the 1,177 in 1990.

He married MARY SALTONSTALL 12 Jul 1750 in New Haven, CT, daughter of ROSWELL SALTONSTALL and MARY HAYNES. Notes for COL. NATHAN WHITING:
The youngest child born of Samuel & Elizabeth, Nathan was born in Windham CT in May 1724 and graduated from Yale College in 1743. Much like his two brothers Nathan served in the defense of the colonies and rose to the rank of Colonel.

Nathan moved to New Milford, CT where he resided for most of his life and entered military life shortly after graduating from Yale. Extracts taken from the book "Two Centuries of New Milford 1707-1907" gives a little insight into Nathan and his township. "New Milford was, during most of these first fifty years of its existence, a frontier town, a line of guards was established which reached across the country from Woodbury to the New York boundary, and the members of the company had to take turns in patrolling this line. The second company in New Milford was organized in 1744, and both of these companies continued to exist until the Revolution." In 1744 Nathan commanded the Eleventh Company of the Second Regiment in which they responded to a military crises outside New Milford. The first recorded service of the New Milford men beyond their own borders occurred about 1758. The greatest accumulation of men found on the record is a company raised for the French and Indian War in 1759. It was commanded by Captain Whiting and was known as the "Tenth Company of Colonel David Wooster's Third Regiment of Connecticut Levy." Shortly after this excursion, Nathan was elected as a Colonel of the Second Regiment and saw action outside New Milford in 1759 and 1761.

Nathan married Mary Saltonstall in New Haven CT on July 12, 1750. Mary was the daughter of CPT. Roswell Saltonstall, of Branford, Connecticut. Her mother, Mary Haynes, (widow of Elisha Lord,) was the granddaughter of Gov. John Haynes of Hartford. During their 21 years of marriage, Nathan & Mary resided in New Milford and had nine children. Three of those children died as infants. There are conflicting dates concerning their daughter Mary. Majority of the records reviewed has her death listed either in 1761 or 1781, yet she married Elisha Hale in 1782. It is believed Nathan's mother, Elizabeth, moved into their household sometime around 1761/62 and lived with them until her death. After Nathan's death, it is believed Mrs. Mary (Saltonstall) Whiting married Rev. Warham Williams, of Northford, CT., but various records has her death listed for 1771.

Wolcott was born in Windsor, Connecticut, the youngest of fourteen children of the colonial governor Roger Wolcott. He attended Yale College, graduating in 1747. He was commissioned to raise a militia company to fight in the French and Indian War, and he served the King as Captain in this unit on the northern frontier. At the end of the war, Wolcott studied medicine with his brother, Alexander,[1] then was appointed sheriff of the newly created Litchfield County, Connecticut, serving from about 1751 to 1771. He married Lorraine (Laura) Collins of Guilford, Connecticut, on January 21, 1755.[2] They had five children, Oliver (who died young), Oliver Jr., Laura, Mariann, and Frederick.

Oliver Wolcott The descendants of Henry Wolcott have acted a conspicuous part in the field and in the legislative hall. Oliver Wolcott, was the youngest son of Roger Wolcott, who was appointed governor of Connecticut in 1751. Oliver was born the 26th of November, 1726, and graduated at Yale College at the age of 21. The same year he was commissioned to command a company which he raised and marched to the defense of the northern frontier, where he remained until the peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. He then returned, applied himself to the study of medicine, until he was appointed the first sheriff of the county of Litchfield, formed in 1751. In 1755 he married Laura Collins, an amiable and discreet woman of great merit. In 1774 he was appointed counselor, which station he filled for twelve successive years. He was also chief judge of the common plea court, and, for a long time, a judge of the court of probate. As a military officer he rose from the grade of captain to that of major-general. In the summer of 1776, he commanded the fourteen regiments raised by Governor Trumbull to act with the army in New York. He headed his brigade at the memorable battle that resulted in the capture of Burgoyne and revived the drooping cause of the bleeding colonies. He was uniformly consulted on important military movements, and was listened to with great confidence and respect. From his common ways he was a big and ardent supporter of the revolution. In 1775 he was appointed by congress a commissioner of Indian affairs for the northern department, a trust of high importance at that time. During the same year his influence was happily shown in reconciling disputes between the neighboring colonies relative to their respective boundaries. Admirable and persuasive in his manners, aided by a sound hatred and a correct sense of justice, he was well calculated to be a mediator between contending parties. In 1776 he took his seat in congress, and remained until he affixed his signature to that Declaration which burst the chains of slavery, gave birth to a nation in a day, astonished gazing millions, made the British king tremble on his throne, and stamped the names of its signers with a fame that will endure, unimpaired, through the rolling ages of time. He then returned and took his station in the field, and on all occasions proved himself a brave, skillful, and prudent officer. When he deemed his services more useful in Congress, he occasionally took his seat in that body until 1783. In 1785 he was associated with Arthur Lee and Richard Butler to conclude a peace with the Six Nations. The year following he was elected lieutenant-governor, which station he filled for ten years, when he was chosen governor, the dignified duties of which station he performed until death closed his mortal career on the first of December, 1797, in the seventy-first year of his age, regretted by all, and most by those who knew him best. In addition to his numerous public services, always performed without pomp or noise, his private character shone with peculiar luster. He possessed all the sterling virtues, was a devout and consistent Christian, an honorable and honest man.

§Death and legacy[edit]
On December 1, 1797, he died in Farmington, Connecticut. He is interred at East Cemetery, Litchfield, Litchfield County, Connecticut.

Oliver Wolcott, Jr., his son, served as Secretary of the Treasury under Presidents George Washington and John Adams and as Governor of Connecticut. The town of Wolcott, Connecticut was named in honor of Oliver and his son, Oliver Jr. His home in Litchfield was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971. In Torrington, Connecticut there is a school named after him Oliver Wolcott Technical High School. He was passionate about poetry.

About 1798, Fort Washington on Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island was renamed Fort Wolcott. Fort Wolcott was an active fortification until 1836. It later became the site of the United States Naval Torpedo Station.
