    Transcription of the 1627 will of Giles Whiting, clerk of Etton, Northampton

    Three images comprise the probate record for Giles Whiting. The first image, Document 7a, shows a document written in 1627 and which summarizes some, but not all, of the legatees. Words on the extreme left margin of the document are incomplete or missing due to tight binding. Words on the extreme right margin are partially illegible due to darkness of the image. The second and third images, Documents 7b and 7c, show the will as written in 1625. Together these two images offer the complete will. This will looks more like a draft then the final document. Many lines of the will, especially on Document 7b, are interposed one on top of the other making it extremely difficult, and in some cases impossible, to distinguish the individual phrases. Other phrases are crossed out. Words on the right margin are in some cases too dark to clearly distinguish. The Latin words and abbreviations are transcribed as found in the documents with the exception of the probate statement at the end of the will which has been summarized in an English translation.

    "Whiting Family. Nathaniel Whitin (1) , the immigrant ancestor of the Whitin Family of Whitinsville , Massachusetts, was born in 1609 in England. He is mentioned in the will of his grandfather, John Smith , who bequeathed to his mother, Sarah (Smith) Whiting, lands in Hoxden, Middlesex county, England. He had a brother, Samuel Whiting, also mentioned in his will. Nathaniel Whiting came first to Lynn as early as 1638, when he was a proprietor of that town. In the first records his name is spelled Whiting, Whyting and Whitinge, most of the descendants having used the form Whiting. He removed to Dedham a few years after he came to New England and was a proprietor there in 1640. He was admitted to the church, July 30, 1641and was made a freeman May 18, 1642. He died at Dedham January 15, 1682/83. His will was dated May 15, 1677, and proved April 19, 1683.

    Came to colonies at age of 29 years.

    Title: Colonial Families of the United States of America Page: Vol. 6, page 289 Text: The emigrant ancestor of Harriet WHITING was Nathaniel WHITING, of Lynn, 1638, and Dedham, 16 41, where he established the first corn mill, on the oldest canal in America, which connect s the Charles with the lower levels of the Neponset River. His wife, Hannah, daughter of John and Hannah DWIGHT of Dedham, survived him thirty years, managed his business affairs and brought up a large family with rare discretion. The corn mill was in the possession of the WHITING family for more than two centuries. The last owner was William WHITING, son of Lemue l and Mary (GAY) WHITING, and of the sixth generation from the first miller, Nathaniel WHITING.

    ===========================================
    Notes for Nathaniel Whiting: According to the Desford, England Parish Register, Nathaniel was the son of Timothie and Anne Bunning(e) Whiting, who were married 20 Oct 1606. Nathaniel is first mentioned in this country as a landholder in Lynn, Mass., in 1638. He is next mentioned in the records of the First Church at Dedham, Mass. He was admitted into the church at Dedham on 30 Jul 1641. He was granted the privileges of a freeman on 18 May 1642. Nathaniel was married in Dedham, Mass, on 4 Nov 1643, to Hannah Dwight, daughter of John and Hannah Dwight of Dedham. She died in Dedham on 4 Nov 1714, aged 89 years (born about 1625). Eleven of their 14 children survived to adulthood. From other records, Nathaniel was born about 1609. He was therefor about 29 when he came to this country, 34 when he married, 63 or 64 when his 14th and youngest child was born, and 73 or 74 when he died. He was about 16 years older than his wife Hannah. Nathaniel was by occupation a miller, and the first to operate a corn mill at Dedham. At their 8th town meeting, 21 Feb 1636-7, the townsmen of Dedham voted to grant Abraham Shaw the right to build a corn mill. He died in 1638 before the mill was Commenced. Therefor, the right was granted to Nathaniel Whiting and John Elderkin. Water was diverted from the Charles River into the Neponset River and sufficient fall and supply of water obtained for a mill. The records do not give the date of completion of the dam and mill, but a committee was appointed on 14 Jul 1641 to "lay out a cartway to our mill". A grant of 8 acres was made to John Elderkin and Nathaniel Whiting on the south side of the millpond for a house lot. There is no date to this grant. John Elderkin sold his half of the property to Nathan Aldus, John Dwight and John Allin (Dwight was Nathaniel's father-in-law) on 8 Aug 1642. They in turn sold their interest to Nathaniel on 29 Sep 1649, making him sole owner. The mill privilege was retained in the hands of the Whiting family until 1823, when the heirs of Hezekiah Whiting sold it to Jabez Chickering. On 15 Jan 1682-3, the day of his death in Dedham, Nathaniel Whiting and John Draper, Sr. were granted the right to erect a fulling mill on the stream below the corn mill. By his will, dated 15 May 1677, he gave all of his possessions to his wife Hannah, who was his executrix. An inventory of his estate on 15 Feb 1682-3 assessed his worth at 489 Pounds. His wife Hannah survived him over 30 years and appears to have managed his business interests and brought up their large family with rare discretion. The largest street in Dedham today is Whiting Avenue. The two schools in town are located on Whiting Avenue. Nathaniel is mentioned in the will of his father-in-law John Dwight, written in 1658: "I giue vnto my sonne, Nathaniell Whiteing, 20s. ...

    ====================================
    A 17th Century Northamptonshire Poet Parson
    The Revd. Nathaniel Whiting, M.A. (1612-1682) was one of a number of my ancestors who, as ordained clergymen, found they could not accept the teachings of the Church of England and turned to nonconformity. Nathaniel's grandfather was the Rev. Giles Whiting, Rector of Pansfield in Essex who favored the Scottish-Presbyterian form of puritanism in the late 16th and early 17th century. Nathaniel uncles included the Rev. Dr. John Whiting, Rector of St. Martin le Vintry, 1611-24 and 18th Canon of St. Paul's Cathedral. He made his name by extracting confessions from those on trial for the murderof Sir Thomas Overbury in the Tower of London. Although he served the establishment for most of his life, he was suspended for a while in 1623 after preaching a sermon in Hampton Court on "the idol of the mass" at a time when Prince Charles' Spanish marriage negotiations had just broken down. Another of Nathaniel's uncles, Rev. Timothy Whiting, held a number of livings in Northamptonshire and Leicestershsire, carrying out his duties without hindra'nce. His son, Rev. John Whiting, Rector of Lexden, who was Nathaniel's cousin, is remembered solely by the form of his death, of which R. Josselin wrote in his diary, "Hear of Mr. Whiting's death...by putting his finger into a man's mouth, whose throat was ill with 'squinsey' and non compos mentis,he bit it vehemently, on which it gangrened and killed him about eight days after". A more distant relative of Nathaniel's, was the Rev. Samuel Whiting who abandoned his living in Lincolnshire to go to Massachusetts in order to pursue his Puritan ways. (1) Although the Whiting family tree is not complete the coat of arms (Gyronny of four azure and ermine overall a leopard's face and in chief 3 bezants)has enabled me to link up the various sections to some extent. In this way I have traced Nathaniel's family back to Thomas Whiting, Chester Harold of the late 15th century.
    Nathaniel went up to Queen's College, Cambridge, as a pensioner at Easter, 1629. He was awarded his B.A. in 1631 and his M.A. in 1635. His tutor was Stubbins. Although he was entered as a pensioner, the college accounts for 1630-3 list him as a scholar, receiving the respective annual payments of 12 s. 6d., 16s. 3d., 19s. 7d., and 15s. 10d. The full income of a scholar was about L12. It was probably about this time that he secured the friendship of Sir William Fleetwood of Aldwincle Manor, as a later letter to Sir William shows: "I am not ashamed (Right Worshipfull) to tell the world how ancient and how affectionate a Maecenas you have been to me; that I received many encouragements from you when I was a student in the universitie; how ready I have alwayes found you to lay forth your power and interest in me...and how much I found the favor of a Patron, and the affection of a friend (I might go higher) for the space of many yeares". (2) Nathaniel's first opportunity.... see Gordon Whiting File

    6. Lieut. JOHN FAIRBANKS, of Wrentham, Mass.
    (2) John II, Jonathan I.

    Born in Dedham, Mass., the 7th of the 12 mo., 1643. Lived there till after 1677, when he removed to Wrentham. Died Sept. 14, 1706. Will dated Aug. 29, 1706; probated Oct. 1, 1706. The will mentions his wife Hannah, sons John, Joshua and Nathaniel, and daughters Hannah, Mary, Sarah and Deborah. See Suffolk Wills, Vol. 16, fol. 188.

    He received by will of his father, a copy of which appears on page 35, all of his real estate, or rights, within the town of Wrentham, and some money.

    He married, "1st of the 1 mo., 1671/1672," Hannah Whiting, daughter of Nathaniel and Hannah (Dwight) Whiting. She was born "the 17th of the 12 mo., 1651," and died June 14, 1740, aged 88 yrs., 5 mos., 27 ds.

    [Note: it is erroneously stated in the Dedham Records, Vol. 1, p. 12. that he married Mary Whiting. Mary was Hannah's sister, born 12: 8 mo. 1658. See Hannah Whiting's will, Suffolk Probate Records, Lib. 18, Fol. 196.

    American Marriage Records Before 1699

    FAIRBANKS, John and Mary Whiting, 1 January 1672, Dedham, Mass. [could have been first wife of John, son of John, son of Jonathan; could have been a third wife to John, son of Jonathan, or perhaps Zaccheus, son of Richard had a son John? At any rate, John Fairbanks, son of Drury Fairbanks married Mary Whiting a century later]

    The marriage date of 1st of the 1 mo is 1 March 1671/1672, not as stated in American Marriage Records before 1699. The date appertains to the Marriage of John and Hannah. So, discounting John son of John, grandson of Jonathan, one would have to follow the other leads, if indeed Mary married a John on the date indicated. Certainly Mary could have married in 1672]
