American stationer and office manager, Volume 87
Prominent Buffalo Stationer Dies
WILLIS PUTNAM WHITING, president of the Whiting Stationery Company, Buffalo, N. Y., died October 22, after an illness which had confined him to a hospital and his home for more than a year.
Mr. Whiting was born April 8, 1853, at Greece, N. Y. His father was captain of Company I, 140th Regiment, during the Civil War, and young Willis was taken around to recruiting rallies as a drummer and became known later as "The Drummer Boy of the Genesee Valley."
In 1865 the Whiting family moved to Rochester, where Willis attended the public school and Rochester Free Academy, from which he graduated. Mr. Whiting then started his career in the stationery business in the store of Steel & Avery in Rochester as errand boy, and worked his way up to salesman.
In 1882 he came to Buffalo with Mr. Vosburgh and opened a book and stationery store under the name of Vosburgh & Whiting. About 1897 he severed his connections with the Vosburgh & Whiting Company and opened a retail stationery store under the name of the Whiting Stationery Company, which has developed into the present splendid establishment of that name.
Mr. Whiting was a member of the Lafayette Presbyterian Church, Stationers' Club of Buffalo, Chamber of Commerce, Ellicott Club, Buffalo Automobile Club, Washington Lodge, The Shrine, "Hugh De Payans Commandery" and a 32d degree Mason.
He was buried Monday, October 25. Among the pallbearers were Millington Lockwood, the stationer, and John Condit of the Joseph Dixon Crucible Company.
The business will be continued under the same name by Lieut. Lloyd Whiting, son of Mr. Whiting, who has been associated in his father's business for some time.
Mr. Whiting was an ex-president of the Buffalo Stationers' Association and has for years been its chairman of the Retail Executive Committee.
At a recent meeting of the Buffalo Rotary Club, J. A. Condit of the Dixon Crucible Co., made the following remarks regarding Mr. Whiting's passing away:
"A good man has passed, whose going will deeply grieve the community. He inspired the love of all who knew him. In the affection of his fellow men he stood high.
"I need not speak of his abilities. His character tells what they were. His loss will be felt in a way that will not be commonplace. How greatly he strove for the good of his fellow men, with what courage and devotion he served them, how unselfish he was, never seeking his own, always solicitous for others.
"For the influence for good that he was in our community, for the gift of such a life, for giving thanks for their having been, for seeking counsel and strength to bear their loss men will turn alike to the great Giver of all good and perfect gifts. There is no other adequate way to cherish the memory of the friendship of Willis Putnam Whiting."
Willis married Miller Morris, Eliza on 10 Feb 1887 in Rochester, Monroe, New York, United States. Eliza was born on 27 Sep 1861 in Francesville, Pulaski, Indiana, United States; was christened in in Buffalo, Erie, New York, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
