This website will contain historical and photographic materials documenting the Whiting family of Hartsville, NY and their descendants. Ancestors of this family, specifically Reverend Samuel Whiting, originated in Lincolnshire, England and arrived in Massachusetts in 1636. Samuel was born 20 November 1597 in Boston, Lincolnshire. Samuel and his wife, Elizabeth (St. John) Whiting arrived in 1636 in Salem Harbor with a 3 year old son, Samuel, and first lived in Lynn, MA. By 1640, Samuel Whiting was the first minister of Lynn, MA. Later, by 1665, Samuel's son, Reverend Samuel Whiting, Jr., was living in Billerica, MA. Their descendants lived there in Billerica for much of the 1700s. Some time after the Revoltionary War, probably by 1800, Jonathan and his wife Rebecca (Danforth) Whiting took the family west, to Buckland in Franklin County, Massachusetts. Then William or his son David Stearns Whiting again went west to Hartsville in Steuben Co., NY by 1813. Along the way to Hartsville, David S. Whiting met Mary Kennedy and married in 1813. Some of their children were born in nearby Tomkins County.
