      Biography: a Representative from Michigan; born in Bath, Steuben County, N.Y., February 18, 1847; moved to Michigan in 1849 with his parents, who settled in St. Clair; attended the public schools and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor 1863-1865; engaged as a merchant and manufacturer; mayor of St. Clair in 1879; member of the State senate in 1882; elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress and reelected to the Fifty-first, Fifty-sec-ond, and Fifty-third Congresses (March 4, 1887-March 3, 1895); resumed his former business pursuits in St. Clair; unsuccessful Democratic candidate for Governor in 1898 and also for election in 1900 to the Fifty-seventh Congress; chairman of the Democratic State central committee; died in St. Clair, Mich., January 31, 1903; interment in Hillside Cemetery.

      Pamelia Whiting Hopkins "Mrs. H. A. Hopkins, 74, died at her home on N. Riverside Avenue, early this morning after an illness of 16 years. Pamelia Whiting Hopkins was born in St. Clair November 9, 1873, daughter of Justin R. and Emily Owen Whiting, and was a graduate of St. Clair High School. She was active in many civic organizations and was past president of the Ladies History Class, and a past regent of the Otsiketa Chapter of the DAR. Mr. Hopkins, who was for many years editor and publisher of the St. Clair Republican and postmaster of St. Clair, died in 1944. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Rosamonde Earle, a granddaughter, Miss Frances Earle, both of St. Clair; a sister, Mrs. William Hatton, Grand Haven, Mich.; two brothers Justin R. Whiting, Sr., Jackson, Mich., and John P., St. Clair; and the following nieces and nephews, Mrs. Fred Tholen Sr., Dearborn, Mich.; Mrs. Vern Hibbard, St. Clair; Mrs. Clifford Domke, Justin Whiting, Jr., and John Whiting, all of Jackson Mich. William W. Ottaway, Laguna Beach, Calif., Dr. John Ottaway, Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.; James Ottaway, Endicott, N.Y.; Miss Norma Hopkins, and Mrs. Katherin Kenzell, Grosse Pointe, Mich. Funeral services will be from the Frederichs Funeral Home Saturday at 2 p.m. Dr. Clyde Wilcox, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery." - Source: local newspaper Submitted by Pat Love
