- George Washington Van Alstyne served a valiant and colorful role in the U.S. Civil War. he enlisted with the Union Army August 12, 1862 with Company C, 4th Heavy Artillary, New York. He was honorably discharged June 13, 1865. G.W. Van Alstyne served in grading the United States Capitol at Washington DC. He served under General Hancok in the famous battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Ann, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and at the seige and blowing up of part of Petersburg and Deep Bottom, Reams Station on the Weldon Railroad, where he was taken as prisoner. George W. was held prisoner six weeks at Bell Island prison, the transferred to Saulsbury prison, North Carolina where he was held until February 22, 1865, when he was parolled.
