From the St. George newspaper this morning:
ST. GEORGE - With loss and yet with joy, we celebrate the life of our husband, father, grandfather and friend. Gentle, shy, strong and loving, George Albert Whiting passed away March 22, 2012 in St. George, Utah. He was the last of his family to survive. He was born March 2 1926 in Crystal, Idaho to Lorenzo Snow Whiting and Perlina Fannin. He lived most of his life in his beloved Salmon River Mountains of Idaho.
Coming to Utah in 1971, he worked for the BLM on the Arizona strip district. He was an auto mechanic, road builder, heavy-duty equipment operator and upon retirement he loved working in his wood shop where he made chests, models, wagons etc. which he gave away. Jeeps, we must mention Jeeps which he loved rebuilding and explored everywhere with his family. He was devoted to teaching his children in family home evenings. George served in the Navy in WWII at Iwo Jima and was blessed to be one of the few survivors of the 1945 Indianapolis tragedy. The last years of his life have been difficult with much discomfort and poor health.
He is preceded in passing by his parents; and siblings: LaVerne, Elmer, Verona, Laura, Rozella, Alvin and Merlin. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nina Louis Lambert; sons: Carl (Carol) Whiting and Hal (Louise) Whiting; daughter, Janene (Steven) Ustach; 13 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Metcalf Mortuary Chapel, 288 West St. George Blvd., St. George, Utah.
