Beloved Woman Is Taken By Grim Reaper at Home
Mrs. Mary Francis Dies After Lingering Illness
Mrs, Mary Lavina Francis widow if Thomas Oliver Francis, passed away at her home on Brewer street Thursday
morning at 8:30 o’clock. Funeral services will be held at the Baptist churh Saturday afternoon at two o’clock with the Rev.
Leo J. Hooper in charge, assisted by the Rev. H. Lindstrom of the Southport Baptist church. Burial will be in the Greenwood
cemetery. A mixed quartet composed of Miss Grace Green, Mrs. Clyde Winchester, George S. Kenny and Guy Corrie will
sing at the service.
Mrs. Francis was one of a family of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Thomas Craig, pioneer residents of
Johnson county. Her birth occurred on November 18, 1857 and her entire life was spent in the county.
On November 18, 1874 she was married to Thomas Oliver Francis, the ceremony having taken place at the Sugar Creek
church. Following their marriage they resided on a farm in Clark township until their removal to this city in 1902. They were
the parents of nine children, three of whom, Alice A, Mary Ann and Adda Pearl are deceased. Mr. Francis passed away on
June 26, 1817 [1917], surviving are Charles Edward, and Mrs. E.E. Flanigan of Indianapolis; William Oscar of DesMoines, Iowa,
Robert E. Francis, John V. Francis and Mrs. Lillian Mae Devers of Greenwood. Fourteen grandchildren and six great
grandchildren also survive. 7
Also surviving are two brothers, Edward J. Craig and Dr. James A. Craig and one sister, Mrs Emma Maze, all of
Greenwood.
Mrs. Francis early in life united with the Baptist church and continued a devout member throughout all the years. As long
as her health would permit, she was always in attendance at the service of the church. Her death followed a several weeks’
illness.
