563. HON. ALFRED GERRY FAIRBANKS, of Manchester, N. H.
(267), Buckman VII, Israel VI, Israel V, Joseph IV, Joseph III, John II, Jonathan I.
Born in Francestown, N. H., Jan. 16, 1822. Removed to Manchester in 1843, where he lived to the time of his death, May 28, 1896.
His education was derived in the public schools of his native place, and was completed at the Francestown Academy. After laeving school he went to Goffstown, where he learned the trade of blacksmith. In 1843 he began his independent career as a blacksmith in the employ of the Amoskeag Corporation in Manchester. In 1857, his health failing, he left the corporation, and purchased a farm in West Manchester. About this time, he opened a meat, provision and grocery store in Manchester, which he conducted for six years. In 1863, he established a bakery, and was awarded the contract for supplying all the bread, meat, and provisions, used in the war hospital at the North End of Manchester, where the wounded soldiers at the front were removed by the government. He faithfully carried out this contract, from his two stores, until the hospital was discontinued in 1864.
He was deputy sheriff and jailor in Hillsboro' County, from 1864, until the State became Democratic ten years later, when he retired to private life, but soon became interested in the Underatking firm of Pearson & Wallace, as a silent partner. Upon the death of Mr. Pearson in 1884, he became an active partner, and was very successful in this line of business, in which he continued until his decease. He always took a lively interest in the politics of the city, and State, first being a Whig, and later an ardent Republican, and filled various official positions with honor to himself, and advantage to the community. Was a member of the Legislature in 1882-82, County Commissioner from 1883 to 1889, and Chairman of the Board three years; was a State Senator in 1892-93, serving on important committees.
In every position Mr. Fairbanks made warm friends, and always held the highest respect and esteem of his fellow townsmen, among whom he had been a prominent factor for advancement.
For fifty-two years he was a member of the Frainklin Street Congregational Church, active in advancing its interests and welfare, and was chairman of the Building Committee, when the church was remodelled in 1878.
He was a member of Mechanics' Lodge, No. 13, I. O. O. F., and for fifteen years served as quarter master of the Amoskeag Veterans.
He had the entire confidence of the community because he deserved it; was one of the few men that are always depended upon to do things for others, because he knew how and was capable. He succeeded in business, and leaves a reputation, which is worth to his friends vastly more than the property he accumulated.
Married, Sept. 10, 1844, Harriet A., daughter of Joshua B. and Deborah (Merrill) Dodge, of Francestown, where she was born Dec. 23, 1821. She died Aug. 22, 1891.
