266. HON. STEPHEN FAIRBANKS, of Boston, Mass.

Born in Dedham Feb. 5, 1784; died in Boston, Sept. 10, 1866. When about fifteen years of age, his father removed to Francestown, N. H., at which time Stephen came to Boston and was apprenticed to the trade of Saddler and Harness Maker. On coming of age he engaged in business for himself. The same year he was admitted a member of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association. Thirty-one years thereafter he was chosen President of the same, and held that honorable position for several years.
He early relinquished the saddlery and harness business, and engaged in the hardware trade, which he pursued until 1846, when he became connected with the Western Railway Corporation (now Boston and Albany); was chosen Director in 1846, and in 1848 was made Treasurer, which office he held till 1866. He served on the School Committee; was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and of the Senate for several terms. Was President of Mass. Temperance Society; Trustee of the Asylum for the blind; Treasurer of the Society for Propagating the Gospel among the Indians and others in North America; and was an active member of many of the Philanthropic Societies and Institutions in Boston. He not only gave freely of his time to the public, but of his money. He was a useful man in the community. He was a believer in the Christian faith, and lived as he believed.
Married, Nov. 27, 1807, Abby Parker, daughter of Capt. Thomas Parker, a Naval Officer.
