States war of 1861, that the said Lizzie during the absence of her said husband while in the war aforesaid left this town with one Henry D. Smith for the state of Pennsylvania, that during her stay there the said Lizzie wrote a letter to her father, Nathan Whiting, who is my husband, requesting him to send her money. She had a child there belonging to said Smith and said in her letter she was going down South as soon as she could give the child away. The letter from her refered to was destroyed, but I well recollect some of the leading contents, and that she the said Lizzie signed her name at the close of said letter “Lizzie Smith.” The said Lizzie never had but one child by Nelson Abbott, the deceased soldier, which child named also Nelson is now living with his grandfather James F. Abbott of this town. I have no interest in any case to which this my affidavit may relate." signed Caroline Whiting
