MASON WHITING was born February 28, 1822 in Douglas, Massachusetts, and died February 17, 1899 in St. Marie, Wisconsin, buried at Mt. Tom Cemetery near Princeton, Wisconsin. He married ALMIRA RICE October 9, 1845 in Johnston, Wisconsin, daughter of BENJAMIN RICE and JUDITH CALVIN. She was born November 26, 1827 in Boston, New York, and died December 1, 1900 in Princeton, Wisconsin, buried at Mt. Tom Cemetery near Princeton.
At a young age he moved with his parents to Boston, Erie Co., New York. It is assumed that Mason and his family came to Wisconsin shortly before Wisconsin became a state. Mason was a farmer and was nearly 43 years old when he was enlisted into the Civil War on Dec. 31, 1864, for one year, serving with Company D, 13th Regt., Wisconsin. He was issued a horse, saddle, and a rifle in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and told to report to his unit in Huntsville, Alabama. From Chicago, he road on the top of freight cars to Alabama to join his group, serving in Kentucky, Alabama, Louisiana Tennessee and Georgia. His general duty was the protection of communication lines and railroads moving supplies to the troops.
While serving in the military, Mason was the victim of severe food poisoning, a major contributor to deaths in the Civil War due to a lack of refrigeration. He was last paid on April 30, 1865, in the amount of $36.95 for clothing and $8.40 for transportation from San Antonio, Texas. It was determined that food poising contributed to his blindness 21 years later. For his disability, Mason received a pension of $8.00 per month.
After the Civil War, Mason and his wife, Almira, farmed near St. Marie, Wisconsin, and he held several positions in county government, as county treasurer, on the county board of supervisors and as the head of the St. Marie Cemetery. Mason was the first of his family to visit Dakota Territory and western Minnesota. The Princeton Republic newspaper stated that Mason Whiting left on a six-week trip to Dakota Territory on April 10, 1868. That was 40 years before his son, Bertine, homesteaded in South Dakota.
Above, left, is Mason and Almira (Rice) Whiting.
