- OBITUARY FOR CLARENCE MORLEY WHITING
Clarence Whiting, 84, of Clitherall died Friday, April 25, 2003 at the Tri-County Hospital in Wadena. He was born on August 22, 1918 in Old Clitherall, the son of Julian E. and Amy L. (Gentzler) Whiting. He attended rural school District # 1 in Old Clitherall, and continued through the 10th grade at the Battle Lake High School.
He moved to California and worked at a C.C. Camp, and then for the State and National Park Department. He then moved to Missouri and did trucking until 1941. On Jan 21, 1941 he entered the U.S. Army and served until 1945 in the Aleutian Islands, New Guinea for a year, and then two years in the Philippines during World War II.
In March of 1943 he married Betty E. Rokes in Clitherall. Following his military service he returned to the Clitherall area and did over the road trucking for 18 years. He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years, serving as Assistant Postmaster and then as Postmaster in Clitherall for the last few years. Mrs. Rokes died in 1991.
He was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Battle Lake for over 50 years, where he served in most offices. He was also a member of the Battle Lake Veterans Groups.
He is survived by a brother, Julian E. (Ilo) Whiting, Jr. of Blue Springs, Missouri and numerous other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; and three brothers, Vincent, Richard and Ronald.
Visitation is Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Services are at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Battle Lake. Clergy is Reverend Mark Hume. Burial is in the Lakewood Cemetery in Battle Lake. Funeral Home is the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Battle Lake.
