561. GEORGE WASHINGTON FAIRBANKS, of Lynn, Mass.

Born in New Boston, N. H., Mar. 28, 1828; died in Lynn, Mass., Nov. 27, 1884. He was from Nov. 1849 to Nov. 1851 employed in the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, as an attendant upon the lecture courses, and messenger in the Library, and was also engaged in making meteorological observations, under Prof. Joseph Henry, then secretary. He afterwards removed to New York City, and engaged in the manufacture of Magneto-Electric Machines. About the year 1860, he removed to Lynn, Mass., and there carried on the same business. He then purchased a dwelling house, with a large lot of land on Lewis St., which is still occupied by his widow and daughter.
Married Jane Clarke, in Washington, D. C., Feb. 26, 1852.
