      Col. D.B. FAIRBANKS Dies

      Colonel D.B. FAIRBANKS of Petaluma, one of the most prominent millers in California, died Friday night. Colonel Fairbanks was president of the Golden Eagle milling Company at Petaluma, a member of the Merchants' exchange and prominent in banking circles. He had been ill for several weeks, but his death was unexpected. He was only recently married to his brother's widow, who survives him.

      His many Santa Rosa friends, as well as the entire Petaluma community in which he had resided since boyhood will be surprised to learn that Colonel D.B. Fairbanks died this morning shortly after one o'clock at Dr. Burke's Sanitarium, near this city. *** It was not generally known that Colonel Fairbanks was sick at the Sanitarium, although he had not been a well man for a long time. The news of his death comes as a shock. ***
      Colonel Fairbanks became well known in military circles of the State while Colonel of the Fifth Infantry N.G.C., and commanded that regiment during the memorable railroad strike in 1894. A number of years ago he retired from the National Guard. *** The deceased was a son of President Fairbanks of the Petaluma Savings Bank, and was for a long time cashier of that institution, resigning to devote his whole time to the Petaluma Flour Mills. *** Last summer he married the wife of, his deceased brother, and the wedding took place in Oakland. In fraternal circles he was prominent, and at the time of his death held a high office in Petaluma Commandery of Knights Templar. *** The remains were brought to the undertaking parlors of Moke & Ward at an early hour this morning and will be sent at once to Petaluma for interment. *** Mrs. A.B. Hill and Miss Dacia Fairbanks, both of whom are well known here are sisters of the deceased.

      Born Nov. 7, 1854. He crossed the plains with his parents, on their way to California, in 1859, arriving at Petaluma during the fall of that year. He was graduated from the State University in Berkeley, Cal., returning to Petaluma, to make it his home. He is the treasurer of the Golden Eagle Flour Mills, of which his father is president, one brother is secretary, and another is manager; in Jan. 1878, he was elected Cashier of the Petaluma Savings Bank, which office he continues to hold. "The personnel of the bank, is of itself a suffieient guaranty of its absolute reliability, and of its straightforward business methods."

      He is Colonel of the 5th California Reg't, National Guards, having held the position for more than ten years. He is unmarried.
