He married, Sept. 21, 1794, Clarissa, daughter of Amasa and Sybil (Holton)
Sheldon, who was born in Berlin, Mass., 1772; died in Lawrenceburg, in 1859.
She was a descendant of the Sheldons of Deerfield, the most noted of the
defenders of their homes against the Indians, and builders of the Old Indian
House in Deerfield. In this house, Feb. 29, 1704, her
great-great-grandmother was killed by the bullet of an Indian, which was
fired through the door and passed through her neck. The old house is not now
standing, but the door is preserved in the rooms of "The Pocumtuck Valley
Memorial Association of Deerfield," and is one of the most valued of its
