From Dennis Kroll (California cousin) 10-2008 (from Ancestry.com)"Family Book of Remembrances and Genealogy with Allied Lines" published Dec 25, 1952:
"LaFayette Meacham, born September 20, 1829, at Hopkinton, New York, third son of Stephen P. and Dolly Meacham married Letitia Yager, then made his first home at Springville where his first child William Edwin was born December 22, 1852.
In 1854 LaFayette removed to San Bernardino, California. In 1855 he bought a 40 acre farm at what is now 9th and Broadway, in the heart of Los Angeles. At different times he owned and operated mining and business properties "on the desert." Later he returned to San Barnafdino where he maintained his home during the remainderr of his life; however, his ranch on the Cajon Pass is still a well known landmark.
LaFayette was a highly respected pioneer of the San Bernardino and Los Angeles areas where he is credited with having introduced many varieties of trees, among which is the Pepper tree, common in San Bernardino Country. In fact one of the first of such trees planted in those parts was planted by him and is still standing near his old home in San Bernardino.
LaFayette and Letiltia were parents of the eight children named below and whose descendants still live in the Los Angeles and San Bernardino area:
William Edwin, 1852; George Franklin, 1855; Charles LaFayette, Henry Denver, 1858; Ransom Marshall, 1863; Stephen Clarence, 1865; Isaac Augustus, 1867; Alida, the olny daughter, who died as a child.
LaFayette died July 24, 1914, and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery at San Bernardino."
