      Provenance (a) Mrs. John M. Miller (Margaret Jackson Whiting), who had relatives in Baltimore, Maryland;
      (a) her daughter, Caroline K. Miller;
      (a and d) her nephew, Hebard Miller Paine, Litchfield, Connecticut (died 1964).

      Color notes (a) Powdered brown hair dressed with a blue band which is inscribed: "DE PRE. DE LOIN" (the dot after PRE signifies the omitted letter S). Blue eyes. Blue tunic which is inscribed along the top: "La vie et la mort." Dull green background, spray of ivy leaves at right.
      Subject (b) According to tradition, Frick Library negatives 54152-3 represent Huguenot refugees who came to Baltimore. When they returned to France, they sent the miniatures to the Baltimore family that befriended them. Frick Library negative 54155 may represent their daughter, but Mr. Paine, the owner, is doubtful.
