518. LIEUT. HENRY SWEETLAND FAIRBANKS, of Lincoln, R. I.

Born in Attleboro, Mass., Sept. 13, 1825; resided in Smithfield, R. I., now Lincoln. Was a mechanical Engineer. He, with his brothers, when young, were put to work in a cotton factory. He worked himself to the head of the Foundry and Machine Co., and, at the time of his death, was at the head of the largest file factories in the world.
He was twice elected to the Rhode Island General Assembly, and was twice appointed by Gov. A. E. Burnside, as Lieutenant of the State Militia. He was reared in the country, where he had limited school privileges, and was called a self-made man. Died Dec. 1, 1878.
Married Ruth Simons, of Tiverton, R. I., Aug. 4, 1843. She died Mar. 25, 1876.
