We are indebted to Mr. L. H. Hedges, one of the officers of the steamboat Pocahontas, for the details of the loss of that steamer, by fire, on Friday night, the 16th inst., near Island No. 78, in Choctaw Bend, 30 miles below Napoleon.

I've been stumbling through sources that have roots in the same areas, but nothing concrete. I have Whitings b. Ohio, spouse in NY, lived in Arkansas, father & brother die in Tennessee. These were river transients, generations that would be just prior to your Frank. Earliest origin I have is George W Whiting in a land division to his children dated 21 Aug 1834, Robertson Co., TN. He is already dec'd prior to 1830. The court names children Ruth Snody {Snowda} b MD, James Thomas Whiting b OH; Elijah Whiting b OH 1809; Allen Whiting; William Whiting & Elizabeth McIntosh. Elijah was steamboatsman. Haven't found connection to MA, but sure it's there. Any interest contact brimerkk@aol.com
