- Birth: 1849 Death: Apr. 21, 1921 George was born in Marquette County, Wisconsin, the son of George Whiting and Nancy Barnum. The family removed to Keokuk, Iowa and thereafter to Monmouth, Illinois following the death of his father by a stroke of lighting in 1854. George lied about his age in order to serve in the Civil War. He first served in F Co., 83rd Illinois Infantry, followed by service in G Co., 61st Illinois Infantry. George never married. He died at the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers at Leavenworth, Kansas.
