Whiting Boathouse
NEENAH — In an era of bankruptcies and bread lines, paper baron Frank B. Whiting built a luxurious boathouse overlooking the headwaters of the lower Fox River.
"This, in Wisconsin, epitomizes the Hollywood glamour of the 1930s," Neenah historian Peter Adams said. "There just isn't anything else like it anywhere."There, the millionaire playboy threw extravagant parties that attracted celebrities such as tennis greats Pancho Gonzales, Bobby Riggs and Dorothy Cheney.
The Wisconsin Historical Society recently recognized the importance of the Whiting Boathouse by adding it to the State Register of Historic Places. It also will be submitted to the National Park Service for consideration on the National Register of Historic Places.
Daina Penkiunas, National Register coordinator for the Wisconsin Historical Society, said the Whiting Boathouse served both as boat storage and as a party place on the water, complete with a rooftop-dancing pavilion. She said it reflects how the wealthy lived during the 1930s and 1940s, when many others were struggling to meet basic needs.
"You still had people who had money who could throw these elaborately themed parties for their friends and their social set," she said.
The landmark was added to the Neenah Register of Historic Places in 2008 based on its architectural, recreational and social significance and its association with Whiting, who was president of the George A. Whiting Paper Co. in Menasha.
Whiting built the Mediterranean Revival Style boathouse at 98 Fifth St. in 1932. He added a party room in 1939 and enlarged the boathouse to two stories in 1946 to accommodate his 57-foot yacht "Nauti-Gal." Upon completion, the boathouse was estimated to cost $100,000.
Adams described the decorative, nautical-themed boathouse and its party rooms as "one of the most dramatic examples of the taste and lavish lifestyles that Neenah's industrial wealth produced during the early 20th century."
The property was deeded to Neenah in 1952 after Whiting's death and is available for rent through the Parks and Recreation Department. It is the city's most popular facility for parties and weddings and the only park property that allows the consumption of alcohol.
"They can have a little taste of that glamour themselves," Adams said.
Frank Brock Whiting of Menasha, the builder's grandson, said he remembers the boathouse "as a wonderful place to visit" as a child. He was 12 when his grandfather died.
"I am just really happy that it is being used for public purposes now," he said. "A lot of people get enjoyment from it."
The boathouse contains two slips that store police and rescue boats for Lake Winnebago
