Notes for NICHOLAS CUSHIN: Nicholas shows up in the 1860 Seneca County, NY Census married to Mary with daughter Carrie. Based on family records transcribed from Cortland County, Nicholas deserted Mary and they gave up daughter Nettie to Dennis & Elizabeth Coon who adopted her. Children of MARY WHITING and NICHOLAS CUSHIN are: 1. CARRIE CUSHIN, b. 1859; d. October 1906, Cortland Hospital; m. WILLIAM MACDONALD STERLING, Aft. 1901; b. March 15, 1861, New York; d. She next appears in 1870 census living with the Adrien/Nancy Huff family as a domestic servant in Ovid. Family records (Lillian Sherman) states that she eventually married William McDonald Sterling after the death of Nettie Sterling in 1901. Her given name may have been Caroline. Death also based on family records. 2. NETTIE ELIZABETH (EMILY ANTONETTE CUSHIN) COON, b. July 31, 1863, New York; d. April 14, 1900, New York. Child of MARY WHITING and WILLIAM COSHUN is: 3. MARY L. She married (1) William McDonald Sterling March 13, 1882 in De Ruyter, NY. Emile Annonette Cushin was the birth name of Nettie Elizabeth Coon. Her father, Nicholas Cushin, deserted her mother when she was 6 months old. She was adopted by Dennis T. Coon and wife Elizabeth Muncy Coon. It is interesting to note that Dennis T. Coon was related to Nettie's husband William McDonald Sterling (second cousin, twice removed). Both families descended from the Coons of Washington County, Rhode Island. The name shortened to Coon from MacCoone. The original ancestor, John MacCoone came to America in 1652 from Aberdeenshire, Scotland. View trascript of Adoption Record.
