John and Isabel Whiting
John Whiting was born about 1570 and died on October 22, 1617. John married Isabel. Isabel was born in 1570. She died on 4 May 1608 in Boston, Lincolnshire, England.
John was the Mayor of Boston, England in 1600 & 1608.
There is some disagreement as to whether this John Whiting was the father of Maj. William Whiting.

Here is an email from one researcher:

Are you aware of two confusions in your Whiting genealogy? One is: John and Isobel Whiting, Mayor of Boston: Boston is not in "Linshire"...it's Lincolnshire, often called Lincs. I'm sure you know this, but it can be confusing to a newbie reading your wonderful site, for which you are to be commended. You've done a lot of good work on it.
Also, John Whiting, Mayor of Boston, Lincolnshire, is not the same man as John Whiting, father of Maj. William Whiting of Boxford, Suffolk. These are two different families in two different counties with some mileage between them. No connection has been found between two that I'm aware of. A lot of confusion has been disseminated between the two Johns, no doubt due to the location names of Boston and Boxford. John and William were such common names of the time as well, making it even more confusing. Just wanted to touch base with you on that. I do enjoy your site. Joy Wiggin-Robbins, March 2005.

Later life and death[edit]
In 1609, William Parker invested in the second Virginia Company and became a member of the council. He had shares in the East India and North West Companies as well.[3] Parker used his influence to protect his brother-in-law, Thomas Habington, from the possible consequence of death, after harbouring the forbidden priests at Hindlip. Although Habington was condemned, his wife's pleas to her brother secured his reprieve.[3] Despite revealing the Gunpowder Plot, Parker seems to have pertained some connections to the Catholic community. His eldest son of six children, Henry Lord Morley, was also a known catholic[3] and in 1609, he was suspected of sheltering students from St. Omer's seminary.[1][5] Monteagle gave permission for his oldest daughter Frances Parker to become a nun, although not willing, at first, to grant her request. He eventually surrendered to his physically handicapped daughter's appeal "in respect that she was crooked, and therefore not fit for the world."[3]

By his marriage with Elizabeth Tresham, he had six children: three sons, three daughters.[1] The eldest son, Henry, succeeded him as 14th Baron Morley and 5th Baron Monteagle. These baronies fell into abeyance when Henry's son Thomas died in about 1686.[6] His oldest daughter, Frances, was a nun; the second, Catherine, married John Savage, 2nd Earl Rivers; and the youngest, Elizabeth, married Edward Cranfield, and was the mother of Edward Cranfield.[citation needed]

Parker was summoned to parliament as Baron Morley and Baron Monteagle in 1618 after the death of his father. He died on 1 July 1622 in Great Hallingbury, Essex and was reported to have received the last rites of the Roman church before his passing.[1]

28. COL. NATHAN5 WHITING (SAMUEL4, JOHN3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1)66,67 was born 4 May 1724 in Windham, CT, and died 9 Apr 1771 in New Haven, CT. He married MARY SALTONSTALL 12 Jul 1750 in New Haven, CT, daughter of ROSWELL SALTONSTALL and MARY HAYNES. She was born May 1728 in Branford, CT, and died 1771 in (Information on Mary's parents extracted from "Genealogical Notes" by Nathaniel Goodwin pg 336).

Notes for COL. NATHAN WHITING:
The youngest child born of Samuel & Elizabeth, Nathan was born in Windham CT in May 1724 and graduated from Yale College in 1743. Much like his two brothers Nathan served in the defense of the colonies and rose to the rank of Colonel.

Nathan moved to New Milford, CT where he resided for most of his life and entered military life shortly after graduating from Yale. Extracts taken from the book "Two Centuries of New Milford 1707-1907" gives a little insight into Nathan and his township. "New Milford was, during most of these first fifty years of its existence, a frontier town, a line of guards was established which reached across the country from Woodbury to the New York boundary, and the members of the company had to take turns in patrolling this line. The second company in New Milford was organized in 1744, and both of these companies continued to exist until the Revolution." In 1744 Nathan commanded the Eleventh Company of the Second Regiment in which they responded to a military crises outside New Milford. The first recorded service of the New Milford men beyond their own borders occurred about 1758. The greatest accumulation of men found on the record is a company raised for the French and Indian War in 1759. It was commanded by Captain Whiting and was known as the "Tenth Company of Colonel David Wooster's Third Regiment of Connecticut Levy." Shortly after this excursion, Nathan was elected as a Colonel of the Second Regiment and saw action outside New Milford in 1759 and 1761.

Nathan married Mary Saltonstall in New Haven CT on July 12, 1750. Mary was the daughter of CPT. Roswell Saltonstall, of Branford, Connecticut. Her mother, Mary Haynes, (widow of Elisha Lord,) was the granddaughter of Gov. John Haynes of Hartford. During their 21 years of marriage, Nathan & Mary resided in New Milford and had nine children. Three of those children died as infants. There are conflicting dates concerning their daughter Mary. Majority of the records reviewed has her death listed either in 1761 or 1781, yet she married Elisha Hale in 1782. It is believed Nathan's mother, Elizabeth, moved into their household sometime around 1761/62 and lived with them until her death. After Nathan's death, it is believed Mrs. Mary (Saltonstall) Whiting married Rev. Warham Williams, of Northford, CT., but various records has her death listed for 1771.

Children of NATHAN WHITING and MARY SALTONSTALL are:
i. MARY6 WHITING, b. 6 Jun 1751, New Milford, CT; m. ELISHA HALE, May 1782; b. 1747, Glastenbury, CT.

Officers for the six Regiments raised for the defence and safety of the Colony. [1775-04-26] Connecticut, General Assembly. [S4-V2-p0411] [Document Details][Complete Volume]
Fourth Company, Fifth Regiment. — David Dimon, Captain; Peter Hendrick, First Lieutenant; Ebenezer Hill, Second Lieutenant; Wakeman Burr, Ensign.
===========================The following sketch of David Dimon is taken from " Brief
Memorials of Ancestry and Kindred," by Arthur Dimon Osborn.

" David Dimon was commissioned Captain of the 4th Company
in the 5th Regiment, when the six Connecticut regiments were
organized in 1775, by Act of the General Assembly, for service in
the revolutionary war. He was promoted to be Lieutenant
Colonel, and on the death of the Colonel took command of the
regiment, and died in the service."

The following narrative was prepared by his son, Ebenezer
Dimon, January 13, 1841:

" Col. David Dimon of Fairfield, commenced his Revolutionary
services in 1774, by assisting in organizing and preparing his
fellow-citizens in the town for that event. In the early part of
1775 he joined a corps of volunteers which took possession of a
quantity of the King's military stores in New York.

" The States of Connecticut and New York having determined
on raising forces for the invasion of Canada, my father received a
commission of Captain in the corps raised for that object. I was
with him from May till the end of August in their company near
the city of New York and did the duty of waiter to him and of
fugleman to the company, till the company broke up and the
troops proceeded under the order of General Montgomery on the
Canadian expedition.

"When the siege of St. Johns commenced my father was pro-
moted to the rank of Brigade Major and became one of General
Montgomory's staff. He assisted in taking Fort Chambly. A part
of the select corps was led by Major Brown and the other part by
him. At the surrender of St. Johns he was appointed to take posses-
sion of the Fort and receive the submission of the garrison. He
continued with Montgomery until he took possession of Montreal,
at which time circumstances required him to return to Connecticut.
In the campaign of 1776 he was promoted to the rank of Major in

one of the Connecticut regiments raised for the defense of New
York, and I was with him during the whole of this discouraging
campaign. In the winter of that year Congress passed an order
for raising the regular army, and he was again promoted to the
rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in one of the Connecticut regiments.
The chief Colonel (Douglas) soon after his appointment was taken
sick and died and the duty of recruiting and preparing the regi-
ment for actual service devolved on my father.

" While this was in progress a detachment of the British army,
under General Tryon, landed on the west side of this town on
their expedition to destroy a large quantity of military stores at
Danbury. As soon as the alarm had reached us here my father
assembled and put in motion such of the new recruits as had been
enlisted in this part of the State to harass the British on their
march. In the battle of Ridgefield which took place in the same
expedition, he acted under the immediate orders of General
Arnold. Directly after this event the regiment was filled up and
prepared for actual service and was posted on the line between
this State and New York. The duties at this post became very
arduous, requiring constant vigilance and change of position to
prevent surprise by the numerous forces of the British then in
New York. In a night movement in September the regiment be-
came drenched in rain during nearly the whole night, and my
father, the next day, was seized with a bilious fever, which proved
fatal in the thirty-sixth year of his age. At this time I was again
with him. About two years after this the house which he left was
burnt by a detachment of the British army, in the general confla-
gration of this village. This loss reduced his family nearly to a
state of indigence severely felt for ten years after."

Another account is given in Lossing's Field-Book of the Revo-
lution, vol. I, page 403.
Fifth Generation. 37

And in vol. I, page 408:

" Col. David Dimon, one of Wooster's subordinate officers was
a native of Fairfield and was a brave and useful soldier. He was
one of the volunteers who captured British stores at Turtle Bay,
N. Y., and one of Montgomery's staff in the expedition to Canada
in 1775.

" He was active in the capture of St. Johns on the Sorel and
Fort Chambly, after which he returned to Connecticut on public
business, and was not with the army in its defeat at Quebec.
Colonel Dimon continued in active service until after Tryon's ex-
pedition to Danbury.

" He had the command of the barricades in Ridgefield and pur-
sued the British to Compo A fever produced by exposure in the
service caused his death in September following when in the 36th
year of his age."

The inscription on his tombstone in Fairfield reads as follows :

19832 http://www.concentric.net/~Ssbray/mecham.htm 9 Aug 2004:
"THE MEACHAM /MECHAM FAMILY: Origin and Spelling of the Surname Lillie Dunford Mecham, a researcher of the MECHAM family, wrote, "It is suggested by one historian that the progenitor of the English family which came to be known as MEACHAM came to England with William the Conqueror from French Normandy in 1066, and that the name was then MEACHAMPE. I have not yet been able to verify this story, but it is reasonable, and the name in the original spelling still persists among descendants of early immigrants to America, both from France and England, who settled in our southern states. (The New Dictionary of American Family Names, however, says that the name MECHAM or MEACHAM means "one who came from Measham, a homestead on the Mease river, in Leicestershire, England." Any name ending with -ham indicates a homestead or walled farm). Another surname dictionary says that the name may have come from Machin, meaning "a stonemason." Another anecdote, in jest, says that the name was bestowed by a neighbor and friend of the first man who took the surname Meacham, who called him "me chum" (my friend). The truth is that the origin of the name is uncertain.
The descendants of the immigrant Jeremiah Meacham all spell the name MEACHAM, with the exception of those who joined the LDS Church in the 1830's, who changed it to MECHAM. It is not clearly known just when or why these three brothers, Joshua, Elam, and Joseph Mecham, dropped the letter "a" in the spelling of their surname, but on the records of the Mormon church it was spelled that way. The pronunciation of the name was changed also, from MEACH-UM (rhyming with peach) to ME-KUM (me-come). There are also two other branches of the family who are apparently distantly related. The Quaker branch who came to America in 1702, all spell their surname MECHEM. Later immigrants spell the surname MEACHEM. Because of the lack of standardized spelling in early times, it may also be spelled Mitchum, Measham, Meachin, and many other ways."
Lillie Dunford Mecham wrote, "It has been found that the Meacham and Mecham family have been very prominent in all walks and talks of life. History records many of them as public-spirited men and women possessing breadth of vision, spiritual fortitude, and a dynamic propensity for work. On the whole the record reveals them to be of a sturdy, fearless, strong-minded and capable race, strongly imbued with the pioneer spirit and possessed of the ability to lead and direct others. There have been great explorers, hunters, farmers, lawyers, judges, postmasters, professors, educators, state attorneys, legislators, mayors, governors, U.S. senators, representatives, clergymen, mission presidents, bishops, stake presidents, high councilmen, patriarchs, doctors, dentists, musicians, scientists, and men in the diplomatic groups of our country. Space here would not begin to let us mention a small portion of these men of note."(GLENN MECHAM, a lawyer who became the mayor of Ogden, Utah in 1992, is the son of Lillie Dunford and Everett H. Mecham).

Birth: Mar. 4, 1655
Wethersfield
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA
Death: unknown
Newington
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA

Sarah Boardman (q.v. Boreman), dau. of Samuel Boreman and Mary Betts, b. of record Mar. 4, 1654/5 at Wethersfield, Conn. She was living at Wethersfield on Apr. 9, 1717 when the estate of her deceased husband was distributed to her, to her step-dau Abigail (Fitch) Kimberly, and her own children son Samuel and Sibell (Fitch) Hurlbut.

On an unrecorded date after Nov. 1684 probably at Wethersfield, Sarah m. as his 2nd wife, Thomas Fitch, s. of Samuel Fitch and Susanna Wiggin, latter the former wife of Maj. William Whiting of Hartford, Conn. Thomas was b. circa 1653 probably at Hartford and d. intestate Oct. 18, 1704 at Wethersfield, Æ 52.

Thomas Fitch m. 1) of record Sept. 15, 1680 at Wethersfield, Abigail Goodrich, dau. of Ens. William Goodrich and Sarah Marvin, b. at Wethersfield June 5, 1662. Abigail d. of record Nov. 8, 1684 at Wethersfield, Æ 23. They had the following three children at Wethersfield:

• i. Thomas Fitch, Jr. b. July 20, 1681; died in infancy.

• ii. Abigail Fitch, b. circa 1682, was living at Newtown, Conn. in 1728 when her husband's estate was probated; m. of record May 11, 1696 at Stratford, Conn., Abraham Kimberly, Jr., b. Mar. 4, 1674/5 at Albemarle County, in modern South Carolina. Nine children of the family. Stiles' 1902 "Ancient Wethersfield" followed by later writers assigned Abigail as the dau. of her father's 2nd wife Sarah Fitch, an obvious error. If the latter were true, that Thomas Fitch's 1st wife d. of record in Nov. 1684 would mean that dau. Abigail could not have been born prior to late 1685, then marrying Abraham Kimberly of record in 1696 when barely 11 years of age. That Abigail (Fitch) Kimberly was a very young bride is also obvious, but not at age 11.

• iii. Sibell Fitch, b. Nov. 2, 1684, d. in infancy Dec. 18, 1684.

Sarah Boardman and Thomas Fitch had the following three children at Wethersfield:

• i. Sibell Fitch, b. circa 1686 assuming she was 18 years of age when she married, d. at Newington, Conn. before Nov. 30, 1747; m. Apr. 27, 1704 at Wethersfield (by James Treat, JP), Joseph Hurlbut, s. of Stephen and Phebe Hurlbut, b. July 10, 1683 at Wethersfield. He d. at Newington, Conn. June 24, 1752, Æ 69 (g.s.) Ten children of the family.

• ii. Samuel Fitch, whose birth is not of record; was living on Sept. 7, 1713 as a minor (under age 21) when William Whiting of Hartford was appointed his guardian. He was living Apr. 9, 1717 when included in the distribution of his father's estate, but no further record has been found regarding him.

• iii. Martha Fitch, b. prior to 1694 assuming she was at least of age (18) at death, d. of record at Wethersfield Feb. 2, 1712/3. Her estate was inventoried Sept. 3, 1713 with administration of Martha, "a single woman," granted Sept. 7, 1713 to her mother, Sarah Fitch.

Delilah Barber1
b. 1797, d. 13 October 1833
Dr. Barber lists four children of Delilah with dates after her death; probably children of Roxanna. Since the first two children are listed with no birth dates, it is still a question as to who their mother is, but seems likely to assign them to Delilah. Delilah Barber was born in 1797. She was the daughter of Job Barber and Lola Mills. Delilah Barber married Erastus Whiting. Delilah Barber died on 13 October 1833.

Descendants of Daniel P. Whiting Revised May 21, 2008 Comments, corrections, questions? Contact me . After much research, I am quite certain this Daniel P. Whiting is the son of Caleb and Lucy (Ross) Whiting and either the grandson or great-grandson of Caleb M. Whiting. More needs to be done, however, to document the line between Caleb M. Whiting and Daniel P. Whiting. For the town of Conewango, The History of Cattaraugus County, New York , published in 1879 by Everts, edited by Franklin Ellis, lists "Daniel Whiting, from Vermont, settled on lot 48, in 1849; and Luther Martin on the same lot, in 1823" and later, on the same page, "Freeborn Fairbanks settled on lot 64, in 1827."

The Ingalls Connection
Revised May 30, 2010
Comments, corrections, questions?
Contact me.

Interestingly, the Whitings share a connection to Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House books, in more ways than one.
One interesting aspect is that the Whiting homestead is mentioned in the book "Little Town on the Prairie." It seems one night while Pa Ingalls was asleep, a mouse had gotten in his hair and chewed some off to use for a nest. The next day he had to attend a meeting at the Whiting homestead to help organize the county, Kingsbury, in the newly-formed state of South Dakota. He was concerned about having to take his hat off if Mrs. Whiting were present. As it turned out, he came home with a little kitten for which he had paid 50 cents, a sizable sum in those days, and was glad to get the kitten to help keep the mice under control.

Laura Ingalls Wilder and Education in Kingsbury County, 1880-1885 (12 pages), by Nancy Cleaveland, gives a comprehensive account of the time Laura taught in Kingsbury County and also covers the tenure of Amos Whiting as Superintendent of Schools.

In addition to the fact that Amos Whiting was acquainted with Charles P. (Pa) Ingalls, Laura's father, Laura had two cousins, Alice and Ella Ingalls, who married Whiting brothers, Leslie Lee Whiting and Arthur Leland Whiting. I have traced the Whiting brothers to their grandfather, Daniel Whiting, but have not yet made a connection to a specific Whiting line.

However, after much research, I am quite certain Daniel Whiting is a descendant of Caleb Whiting, the Revolutionary War soldier. Everything I have documented fits nicely, but I do not have a birth record or an adequate reference to his parentage (primary source preferred).

Descendants of Giles Whiting, published online (PDF format) by Jeff Maass, indicates that Daniel is the grandson of Caleb M. Whiting, through his son Caleb (# 99), and carries the line down to Leslie Lee and Arthur Leland Whiting. It does not give documentation however. See Daniel Whiting Research for an overview of problems and discrepancies encountered in connecting the line.

In the Recollections of Susan (Fairbank) Whiting, Susan Whiting mentions Uncle Daniel and Aunt Rilla (Aurilla) and goes on to say that Uncle Daniel died in 1849 (Part 2: The Wisconsin Years, Paragraph 12), which agrees with the information I have on Daniel Whiting. She also mentions Uncle Dorris in the same paragraph and Amos elsewhere in the account. Amos and Dorris are brothers of her husband, Newell. This, along with BLM land records, shows that Daniel and Aurilla Whiting do have some connection to my Whitings.

It is also interesting to note that a brother of Charles Phillip Ingalls (Laura's father) and Peter Riley Ingalls (Alice and Ella's father) was George Whiting Ingalls, and the father of these three brothers was Lansford Whiting Ingalls. The fact that George and Lansford both bore the middle name Whiting is an indication that a past relative may have been a Whiting.

Sometimes a child was named after someone famous, such as a president. For instance, Andrew Jackson Whiting, father of Leslie and Arthur Whiting, may likely have been named after the president, Andrew Jackson. Also, it is possible that a name may have been used to honor a local celebrity or hero, or just a notable person in the community.

People often refer to second and third cousins, etc., as "cousin," or somewhat of a blanket coverage for a "relative." In her "Recollections," Susan (Fairbanks) Whiting may have referred to Daniel and Rilla as Uncle and Aunt in the same sense as cousin. Note that Susan had a sister also named Aurilla. This is likely the Rilla mentioned in the very beginning of her Recollections.

What follows is information I have on the family of Peter Riley Ingalls.

PETER RILEY INGALLS was born October 28, 1833 in Cuba Twp., Allegheny, New York, and died March 22, 1900 in Milaca, Mille Lacs, Minnesota; bur. Forest Hill Cemetery, Milaca. He married ELIZA ANN QUINER June 6, 1861 in Concord, Jefferson, Wisconsin. She was born April 21, 1842 in Brookfield Twp., Waukesha, Wisconsin, and died June 6, 1931 in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California; bur. Hemet, California. See The Ingalls Inquirer, Vol. 5, No. 2 - July, 1988, for Eliza Ann (Quiner) Whiting's obituary. Also see The Ingalls Inquirer, Vol. 9, No. 2 - July, 1992, for a short note concerning the grave of Peter Riley Ingalls at Milaca, Minnesota.

Some sources have given the place of death for Peter as Mazeppa, Minnesota, and others as Milaca, Minnesota. I checked Milaca and found this entry in a ledger at the registrar's office at the Mille Lacs County Courthouse (Book B, page 3, line 30): Bogus Brook (township), Name - Peter Riley Ingalls, Date of Birth - October 28 - 67 years, 5 months old, Died - March 22, 1900, Cause of Death - Fatty degeneration of the heart, Duration - 6 months, Occupation - Farmer, Born - New York, Father - Lansford Ingalls, Last Residence - Milaca, Parents' Birthplace - Canada. The entries in this book are original entries (entries made as the events occurred). The stone gives his birth year as 1834 but the information in the ledger matches everything else.

I located his grave at Forest Hill Cemetery, Milaca, on the west bank of the Rum River. It is just inside the gate (about four car-lengths) and on the river side, just before the water spigot. It's a flat stone within six feet of the lane. Judging from the style of the stone, it was likely placed there several years after Peter died in 1900. A photo of his grave and a short bio has been posted on Find-A-Grave. It also includes a picture of Peter and Eliza, which was posted by an Ingalls fan.

Children of PETER RILEY INGALLS and ELIZA QUINER are:
i. ALICE JOSEPHINE INGALLS, b. April 23, 1862; d. January 30, 1934. She married ARTHUR LELAND WHITING March 20, 1881 in Wabasha, Minnesota, son of ANDREW JACKSON WHITING and URANIA BROWN. He was born was born December 3, 1859 in Claremont, Dodge, Minnesota, and died January 3, 1949 in Ventura, California. Both are buried Bellevue Cemetery, Ontario, San Bernardino, California.
ii. ELLA ESTELLA INGALLS, b. January 23, 1865 in Wiconsin; d. March 9, 1945. She married LESLIE LEE WHITING November 29, 1883 in Dakota Territory, son of ANDREW JACKSON WHITING and URANIA BROWN. He was born March 8, 1858 in Claremont, Dodge, Minnesota, and died June 3, 1927 in Riverside, Riverside, Californi
iii. PETER FRANKLIN INGALLS, b. November 16, 1866; d. September 23, 1932. He married, September 13, 1891, MARY EDITH (MOLLY) MCGOWIN. Children: Edith Elsie (February 1894), Alexander (November 1896), Florence E. (September 1897), Perlie Belle (May 1899), Freddie Franklin (1900), and Mary Emily (November 1905).
iv. LANSFORD NEWCOMB INGALLS, b. April 5, 1870; d. 1946, Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota. He married MELISSA FUNK. She was born 1876, and died 1941. From the Atlas and Farmers' Directory of Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, Bogus Brook Township (copyright 1914): Ingalls, L. N. R2, sec 6, ac 80, sec 7, ac 80, wf Melissa, ch Alice, Arthur, Helen, Francis, Gerald, (1). [The (1) means they lived in the county 1 year.] This property is believed to have belonged to his father, Peter Riley Ingalls, originally. Some of Peter's descendants later located in Burnett County, Wisconsin, which is basically straight east of Milaca, just a few miles into Wisconsin.
v. EDITH FLORENCE INGALLS, b. June 29, 1872; d. July 13, 1951. She married HEIL NELSON BINGHAM June 9, 1892.
vi. EDMOND LLEWELLYN INGALLS, b. 1880. He married EDITH MAE ________.

Also, listed in the Birth Record Search Site For South Dakota Birth Records With Birth Dates Over 100 Years is Bruce Ingalls Whiting, born 01/12/1889 in Beadle County to Katie May Ingalls and Wilfred Barron Whiting (state file number 566058). Beadle is the next county west of Kingsbury County. From information obtained from another Whiting researcher, it doesn't seem that he is closely related to my Whiting line. The relationship, if any, to Laura Ingalls Wilder is still unknown.

As an added note on the Ingalls family, a very interesting article concerning Mary Ingalls and her years at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School in Vinton, Iowa, is located on the Benton County IAGENWEB Project site.
