I give to my sonne William L100 more than I give to either my sonne John or Samuel; I give to John & Samuel L100 more to each than I give to my daughter Sarah or Mary. I give L20 to Mr. Hooker, L10 to Mr. Stone, L5 to mending the Highway betwixt my hwse and the meeting house, also L5 to some godly poore of the towne. I desire Mr. John Haynes, Mr. Edward Hopkins, Mr. John Webster, with Mr. Hooker & Mr. Stone, to be Overseers. Alls, I doe bequeath unto my father and mother L20. and if the bee dead my mind is it should be given unto my brother and his children.. William Whiting.

"2 April 1646. Intending another voyage, my will is, my son Joseph shall have an equal portion with sonnes John & Samuel. I give William L50 more; to Mary, L10 more; to my sister Wiggin, L5; and to each of her children L3; I give to Margery Parker L10, my former will to remain in force. William Whiting In presence of Edward Hopkins.
"William Whiting, upon his death bed: It is my minde that the children which God hath given me since the will was made wch I have in Mr. Hopkins hands, shall have an equal portion in all my estate together with the rest of my children as I have to these devised. Also I confirme L10 given to Mr. Hopkins, L10 to Mr. Webster, L10 to Mr. Hooker's Children, L10 to Mr. Stone's Children, L10 to the poor, L5 to Hartford, & L5 to the other two towns, Wyndsor & Wethersfield, and L5 to Mr. Smith's Children, of Wethersfield. William Whiting In presence of Henry Smith, James Cole. 24th July 1647.

Paper on file compared with original.
"2 September 1647, Mrs. Whiting is admitted to Adms. according to the will.
"3 October 1654. Mr. Webster, Mr. Stone, Mr. Fitch, Mr. Will Whiting, John Whiting, presenting to this court a distributiyon of Mr. Whitings estate agreed upon by them (signed & sealed), bearing date 30 Sep 1654, this Court allowes to be recorded.
"29 October 1667. Whereas, Mr. Alexander Briant and Mrs. Susannah Fitch have, by an Instrument of Resignation bearing date 27 June 1662, resigned their Interest in and unto the estate of Mr. William Whiting, Decd, that hath bee in ye possession and Improvement of sd. Susannah, in the time of her Widowhood, unto the Children of ye sd. Mr. Whiting, and they desire the favor of the Court to have Deacon Edward Stebbing & Thomas Bull as Adms. on the remayning part of ye Estate."
Further probate records pertaining to this family are found under Nathaniel Collins: "Court Rec. p. 92 - 4 Sep 1684: Mr. John Whiting, Mr. Joseph Whiting, Mr. John King in Right of Mrs. Sarah his wife, and Mr. Nathaniel Collins in Right of Mrs. Mary his wife, are plaintiffs; Corporall Thomas Bissell, Defendant; in an Action of the Case of unlawfull detaining from them their proportion of Land now in your possession, sometime the Land of their Father Mr. William Whiting, Decd, given them by the will of their Father.
1:385 William Whiting. Court Record Page 92 - 4 Sep 1684: Mr. John Whiting, Joseph Whiting, John King in right of Sarah his wife, Mr. Nathaniel Collins in right of Mary his wife, Plaintiff; Capt. Thomas Bissell Defendent. For unlawful detention of Lands, their Proportion, sometime the land of their Father, Mr. William Whiting, Decd. Nonsuited."

In the Granberry Family, the Margery Parker mentioned in the 1646 will above is identified as the wife of William Parker; both were born in England. William died at Saybrook CT 21 December 1686, and Margery died at Saybrook 6 December 1680. The authors comment on the L10 legacy: "This was a good-sized legacy to receive from a man, even though wealthy, who had a wife and children; and though no relationship is mentioned, it is likely that Margery was connected in some way with the Whitings or that they brought her to this country as a member of their household. The Parker children were all recorded at Saybrook, though the older ones must have been born at Hartford. The eldest was born in 1637, so the marriage of William and Margery probably occurred soon after they came to Hartford."
The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire gives information about Capt. Thomas Wiggin, gentleman. Wiggins witnessed delivery of the Vines patent 25 June 1630, the Hilton patent 7 July 1631, and of Piscataqua 22 October 1631. He was in England 31 August 1632, and there on 19 November 1632 when he wrote to Sec. Cooke estimating the English in N.E. as about 2000. A week later a patent was granted by the Council of N.E. In March 1632/1633 he was called the chief agent (in England) of the honest men about to buy out the Bristol men's plantation at Piscataqua and plant 500 people before Michaelmas. Winthrop, on 10 November 1633, records his arrival at Salem in the James with about 30 men. He went directly to Piscataqua from where he wrote a letter in November 1633. As agent for Lords Say and Brooke and in his own interest, he was opposed to the Mason claims, and in time became a strong adherent of Massachusetts and a help in extending their power. His wife Katherine was willed L5, and each of her children L5 by her brother Mr. William Whiting.

The Fourteenth regiment Rhode Island heavy artillery (colored) in the war to ...
By William H. Chenery
JOSEPH CARY WHITING, Jr.
F1rst L1eutenant And Adjutant Joseph Cary Wh1t1ng, Jr., was born in Providence, R. I., Aug. 2, 1840. His maternal ancestor on this side of the seas was Elizabeth (St. John) Whiting. She was the second wife of Lawrence Whiting, first Congregational minister of Lynn, Mass. (1630). She was a descendant of the Barons of St. John, of Bledsoe, and sister of Oliver St. John, Chief Justice of the English Commonwealth, and cousin of Oliver Cromwell, its Founder and Defender.
The maiden name of Lieutenant Whiting's mother was Patience Borden (family pronunciation Burden) Durfee. Benjamin Durfee, her progenitor, settled at Tiverton, R. I., in 1680. Her mother was Hannah, daughter of Elisha Anthony, of Newport. Elisha Anthony's ancestral tree was planted at Mount Hope by John Anthony, in 1650, or twentyfive years before King Philip was killed there. Lieutenant Whiting's grandmother on the paternal side was Elizabeth Cary, daughter of Joseph Cary, who married in Providence, in 1763, Elizabeth Carey. Joseph Cary came a babe in arms to Providence about 1730, with his father, who moved up from Bristol, where his great grandfather, John Cary, settled in 1640. He crossed to Bristol from South Braintree, Mass., where his father, John, and a few others bought land of the Indians, and settled in 1630. The Carys came from Bristol, England, where the father of John (of Massachusetts) was mayor. Hugh De Kary, the English progenitor of the tribe, crossed into England with the Conqueror.
Lieutenant Whiting's father was born in Providence in 1796, his mother in Newport in 1800. Her family built ships and were of the original proprietors of Long Wharf, and another wharf long since sunk under the waters of the Bay. Lieutenant Whiting's grandfather, Nathaniel Palmer Whiting, was born near Norwich, Conn., at Voluntown. His ancestors were of the Hartford and Windsor colonies. The first expedition against Canada from New England was led from Hartford, in 1690, by a Colonel Whiting, and the family were quite prominent there and at Windsor. The family of Whitings is not a numerous one, but it furnished eleven officers of the line to the Revolutionary forces.
Lieutenant Whiting's mother's family were Quakers, and suffered seriously through the occupation of Newport by the British. Her grandfather, besides his Newport ship-yards, owned about 7,000 acres of timber land,- a tract extending from Fall River to Fairhaven; and of this estate he contributed about one-half, in silver obtained therefrom, to help the Colonists.
The subject of our sketch attended in his youth the Summer Street Primary, Intermediate, and Grammar Schools, and the Providence High School, of the Class of '58. He graduated with the Class of'57, and attended " Chemistry Lectures " at Brown. He was subsequently employed as a clerk in the Merchants Bank, Providence, R. I., from April, 1857, to April, 1859. He was engaged in the survey of Denver, Colorado, in the summer of 1859. He left Brush Creek, the scene of a battle of the Civil War, on the 27th of March, 1859, with an ox team train in charge of A. C. Hunt, who afterwards (under President Andrew Johnson) was Governor of the Territory of Colorado. He reached the then little settlement of Denver, June 27th. He returned to the "States " the same year, leaving Denver November 2d, and reaching Plattsmouth, Nebraska, Dec. 2, 1859. He then went out on the old Santa Fe trail to the crossing of the Arkansas, thence up the river to where Pueblo now is, and thence "over the Divide," and returned via the right bank of the Platte, a journey afoot of about fourteen hundred miles. He cast his first vote at the age of nineteen, for delegates to the first convention of the then unorganized territory of Colorado, and attended the convention. He subsequently returned to Rhode Island, and was a student at home until his entrance into the military service. He was enrolled as a private in Company E, Tenth Rhode Island Infantry, May 26, 1862, and was mustered in the same date. He was afterwards promoted to corporal, and served with his company in the Defences of Washington, D. C. He was mustered out with his regiment at the expiration of its term of service Sept. 1, 1862.
He afterwards assisted in recruiting Company A, Twelfth Rhode Island Infantry, expecting to be its first lieutenant, but was unjustly deprived of his commission, and went out as sergeant, and mustered in as such Oct. 13, 1862. He participated with his regiment in the battle of Fredericksburg. He still retains the musket which, when his own became foul, he crept out from under cover to secure from among the slain.
After the battle of Fredericksburg Lieutenant Whiting was promoted to first sergeant of his company, Jan. 1, 1863, and was subsequently commissioned second lieutenant, May 23, 1863, and mustered in as such to date from June 2, 1863. He participated with the Twelfth in its campaign in Kentucky and the West, where it gained by its severe and harassing marches the sobriquet of the "Trotting Twelfth." He was mustered out July 29, 1863.
In the formation of the Fourteenth on the Dexter Training Ground, he rendered invaluable assistance to Colonel Viall, and served as adjutant of the regiment from the beginning to the end of its organization, rendering conspicuous and faithful service. He was appointed regimental adjutant Aug. 27, 1863, and mustered into service Sept. 14, 1863. When the Third Battalion left Dutch Island, April 3, 1864, he accompanied Colonel Viall to New Orleans. When regimental headquarters were established at Camp Parapet, just above Carrollton, Lieutenant-Colonel Viall assumed command of the post, and Lieutenant Whiting was post adjutant. When Lieutenant-Colonel Viall was in command of the District of Carrollton Lieutenant Whiting was his acting assistant adjutant-general. He served in this capacity till Aug. 22, 1864, when he was summoned by Colonel Sypher to the new regimental headquarters established at Plaquemine, La. He was a member of a military commission from Oct. 26, 1864, until Nov. 21, 1864. He afterwards accompanied Colonel Sypher on his various details for duty, viz.: to New Orleans, to Greenville, back again to Plaquemine, to Donaldsonville, and regimental orders to all the battalions were issued from these points.
Lieutenant Whiting was mustered out with his regiment at Camp Parapet, La., Oct, 2, 1865. After the war he located in Louisiana in 1866, except two months, when he was North recovering from typhoid fever. After convalescing he was elected and accredited one of the two delegates to the first soldiers' and sailors' convention (Pittsburg), 1866. He was Mayor Thomas A. Doyle's secretary from March to October, 1867. From 1867 to 1871 he was in mercantile business in Chicago. From 1871 to June 1, 1876, he was engaged in the same business in St. Louis, Mo. He founded in St. Louis what is now known as The Standard Stamping Company. Retired from same April, 1881. Engaged in mining since in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Montana. He is a member of the California Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States; is also a "Colorado Pioneer."

HAMILTON I. WHITING, who is living in practical retirement on his farm, near the village of Scott, was born February 13, 1839, in the town of Scott, Cortland County, N. Y. He is a son of Anson Lord and Nancy (Burdick) Whiting, and a grandson of Thomas Whiting.
The Whiting family is of English descent, our subject's great-grandfather, Theophilus Whiting, having been born in England. He came to this country during the early colonial period and settled in Connecticut, where his son Thomas was born. Thomas Whiting remained in his native state until 1811, when he with his wife and eight children moved to Spafford, Onondaga County, N. Y. There he spent most of his life, but was living at Onondaga Hill, near Syracuse, when his earthly career ended. He was one of the pioneer settlers of Spafford, which was then called Babcock Settlement, and followed the occupation of a farmer.
Anson Lord Whiting was a native of Connecticut and was four years of age when he came with his father to Spafford, in 1811. There he grew to manhood and followed farming; in 1833 he moved to the town of Scott, where he operated a mercantile store for the following sixteen years. He also manufactured flax for many years. He was an extensive land-owner and shortly before his death gave each of his five children a good farm. He was a shrewd and energetic business man and accumulated considerable money, besides owning no small amount of real estate.
He was united in marriage to Nancy Burdick, a daughter of Henry and Jemima (Crandall) Burdick. The Burdick family is of Scotch descent, and, upon coming to this country, settled in Hopkinton, R. I., where Henry, our subject's maternal grandfather, was born. There he remained until the year 1800, when he came to Scott and purchased a farm. After a stay of two years, he went back to his native state and upon returning to Scott, he was accompanied by his father and mother, and his four brothers, Joseph, Paul, Jesse and Russell. They all settled within a radius of five miles of Scott, and his brothers, with the exception of Paul, lived to be prosperous and successful farmers. Paul was of a mechanical turn of mind and was an inventor; his son Orin became well known all over the country by his connection with the Osborne reaper. Henry Burdick was a pioneer settler of Scott and one of its leading citizens. Besides clearing his own farm of 100 acres, he cleared farms for others. He was an active and industrious man and possessed the confidence of all who knew him. He acted as justice of the peace for many years and served on the board of supervisors. He married Jemima Crandall, by whom he had the following children: Elmira, deceased, was the wife of Daniel Babcock of Scott; Sallie, deceased, married Abel Lewis of Scott; Nancy, married Anson Lord Whiting, our subject's father; Betsy, deceased; Henry Lee; Jared C. was a prominent publisher of New York City, where he was at the head of the Ladies' Wreath and Parlor Annual; Russell M. was a prominent business man of Hartford, Conn., and was interested in the cultivation of oranges in Florida; William M.; and Asher B., who was the publisher of "Helpers Impending Crisis." Henry Burdick had reached the advanced old age of eighty-nine years, when he died in 1869. Mr. and Mrs. Whiting's union was blessed by the birth of five children, namely: Lucelia O., deceased, who was the wife of Hon. S. A. Childs, whose sketch appears elsewhere in this book; Henry Lee, after attaining his majority, went to Hartford, Conn., where he was in the mercantile business for twenty-five years, then returning to Scott in 1892, where he died in the same year; Hamilton I., our subject; Lorinda F., the wife of James B. Spencer, whose personal history appears elsewhere in this book; and Adelle O., who married Leland Griffin, a resident of Scott. At one time our subject's father was a Whig, but later became a Republican. He was quite active in politics and held a number of public offices; for many years he was a member of the board of supervisors, and was also town clerk. Religiously, he was a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, and contributed largely to the support of that organization.
Hamilton I. Whiting received his primary education in the district school at Scott, after which he attended the De Ruyter Institute of Madison County, N. Y. At the age of eighteen he left school and engaged in the manufacture of flax in partnership with his father, under the firm name, A. L. Whiting & Son. Eight years later he began to manufacture green tow and continued in that business for some fifteen years; he was the first in this section to engage in that business, but he was quickly followed by others. In 1884, he opened a general merchandise store in Scott and conducted it alone until 1891, when his son, Merton A., became a member of the firm. One year later, Mr. Whiting retired from active business life, and his son has since conducted the store with the same good judgment, that characterized all of his father's business ventures. Mr. Whiting still oversees the farm of 148 acres, upon which he now lives, but does none of the hard work.
He was united in marriage to Josephine A. Truman, a daughter of Dr. William M. Truman of Alfred Center, Allegany County, N. Y., in 1858. Dr. Truman was born in Madison County, N. Y., and studied medicine in Scott. He graduated when he was nineteen years old and then went to Richburg, Allegany County, where he practiced for about seven years. He next went to Alfred Center, where he acquired a large practice, and remained the rest of his life. He married Hulda L. Babcock of Scott, and they reared a family of four children, namely: Josephine A.; Elosia A.; Adelbert W., M. D., lives in Rochester, N. Y.; and Mary, deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Whiting have reared four children, whose names are as follows: William I., who is head clerk and manager of a grocery store at Skaneateles, N. Y., Lena M., the wife of John B. Brown, a farmer of Scott; Merton A.; and Mary E. In politics, Mr. Whiting is a stanch Republican and takes an active interest in state as well as local politics. He is serving in an official capacity as county committeeman, and was supervisor one term. He is also a director of the Homer National Bank. He is a well informed man, sociable, genial, and has a large number of friends.
