Notes
John Whiting, second son of William Whiting, was born 1635; graduated at Harvard College, 1653; preached several years in Salem, Mass. He was there in 1659, March 8, when "the selectmen, together with the deacons and Mr. Gedney, are desired to treat with Mr. Whiting to know his mind about staying with us" [Salem Town Records]. He removed with his family "from the Bay" to Hartford, and was ordained over the First Church in 1660. In 1669, in consequence of the discussions which agitated the church at that time, Mr. Whiting and others presented a petition to the Assembly "for their approbation, for a distinct walking in Congregational Church Order," which was granted, and in 1670, a new Church was formed, of which Mr. Whiting was chosen pastor, and so continued till his death, September 8th, 1689. Rev. John Whiting was twice married. 1. To Sybil Collins, daughter of Deacon Edward Collins, of Cambridge, Mass., by whom he had 7 children. 2. Notes for REV. JOHN WHITING:
John is our direct descendent.See our book, "Our Whiting Heritage" for a more complete narrative.
Our John married twice, first to Sybil Collins the daughter of Edward and Martha (Baylie) Collins. During their 18-year marriage, John and Sybil had seven children. In 1673, the 38-year-old John married Phebe Gregson, daughter of Thomas and Jane Gregson of New Haven, with whom he had seven additional children. John graduated from Harvard College in 1653 at the age of 18 and several records state he preached several years in and around Salem, Massachusetts before moving to Cambridge. Other records indicate John moved to Cambridge Massachusetts shortly after graduation sometime in 1653/54. In 1660 he moved with his family "from the Bay" to Hartford, CT where he was ordained at the First Congregational Church. (Salem Town Records.)
According to journals taken from New England Families Memorial, there was a Rev John Whiting who served as the chaplain of the Hartford Colonial Foot forces during the King Philip's War in 1675. The journal further states this John Whiting was killed by Indians on Sept 8, 1690.Other articles record John Whiting died from Indians in Sept 1697, and Sept 1688. We now know that the Rev. John Whiting who was killed by Indians was the descendent of Samuel Whiting of Lynn, Mass., who is no relation to our Hartford Whitings. (Whiting Memoir).

He served many years as a justice, a captain of militia, and a vestryman. He was elected to the House of Burgesses, representing Frederick County in the sessions of 1754 and 1755. He used his influence to ameliorate the sufferings of Friends caused by the laws governing those dissenting in religious opinions. ***After the settlement in 1749 in the Shenandoah Valley of Lord Fairfax, withwhom Isaac PErkins was on very friendly terms, he secured several additional grants of land in the Northern Neck, lying in the counties of Frederick and Hampshire.
