WHITING Direct Line Ancestors of Annabell Marion Brown Wright
JEREMIAH B. WHITING Jeremiah B. Whiting was born about 1771 in Sharon, MA. He married Ruth Sweet June 25, 1797 in New Bedford, Briston, MA. Ruth Sweet was born about 1778. She was the daughter of Silas Sweet and Mary Blackman. Soon after the wedding they moved to Bradford, Vermont and in 1807, they moved to Northern New York. Dr Whiting practiced medicine in Vermont, Onondaga and Cayuga Counties in New York and then moved to Michigan. In the 1850 census, which was taken shortly before his death, he was listed in the home of his daughter Thalis (Whiting) Snyder, in Calhoun county, Michigan. From "A History of Bradford, Vermont", by Rev Silas McKeen, pages 396-7: "Dr. Whiting practiced medicine in Bradford for a few years. He resided in the part of town called Goshen. He had a good preparatory education and was well-read in his professional studies. He distinguished himself somewhat in his judicious treatment of scarlett fever which prevailed at one time during his practice in Bradford." The following is from "The History of Cayuga County 1789-1879 page 462 Town of Moravia" ....... Jeremiah B. Whiting joined the County Medical Society February 2, 1826, and practiced in the north part of the town till 1832, when he removed to Michigan. He was from Dutchess county. ........ "Northern New York" must refer to Spafford in Onondaga County; the book Onondaga or Reminiscences of Earlier and Later Times, by Joshua V. H. Clark, A.M., Stoddard and Babcock, Syracuse, 1849, pp. 348 - 352, lists Dr Jeremiah B Whiting as one of the first Doctors in Spafford. And the Centennial History of Spafford tells us that Dr Jeremiah Bumpus Whiting settled in Borodino, then called Child's Corners, about 1802. He continued to practice medicine and clear up and manage a new farm until 1819, when he removed to Sempronius in Cayuga County and afterwards went to Michigan, where he died. He was a good classical and medical scholar and was the best skilled in the use of American indigenous remedies of any of our early physicians. The History of Onondaga also notes that Dr. Jonathan Kneeland of Marcellus was a precocious youth and at age eleven (1823) became a student of medicine under Dr. Jeremiah Bumpus Whiting of Sempronius, Cayuga County. The Kneeland genealogy (Seven centuries in the Kneeland family) tells us that Jonathan "was appenticed to learn the art of healing to Jeremiah Bumpus Whiting of Sempronius. Bumpus was a college graduate and he agreed to reward Kneeland for faithful services in ten years, with a horse and saddle bags. This delightful experience and prospect was rudely ended by the relapse of the learned Whiting to his old but relinquished habit of quaffing the flowing bowl". The History of Cayuga County notes that Jeremiah B. Whiting joined the County Medical Society on 2 February 1826 and practiced in the north part of the town of Moravia until 1832, when he removed to Michigan. This history states that he was from Dutchess County. Children of Jeremiah Whiting and Ruth Sweet are: 1. Jeremiah B. Whiting, Jr., born Abt. 1812 in New York; died Abt. 1852 in Scott, Cortland, NY; married Eliza M. unk. 2. Thalis Whiting, born Abt. 1819. JEREMIAH B. WHITING Jeremiah B. Eliza M. was born about 1814 in New York. Children of Jeremiah Whiting and Eliza are: 1. She married (1) Nicholas Cushin about 1862, son of DAVID CUSHIN and JEMMIMA. He was born about 1832 in Steuben, New York. She married (2) William Coshun in December of 1874. He was the son of CATHERINE. He was born about 1822 in New York and died after 1880 in Seneca, New York. Obit: "Mary A Coshun, a sister of Mrs. William Woodard and J. B. Whiting was buried in the McNeil Cemetery on Saturday last. Her death occured on the 13th, and funeral service were held the 15th at the home of Mrs. George Stewart. Farmer Review 12/22/1900." Her father, Nicholas Cushin, deserted her mother when she was 6 months old. She was adopted by Dennis T. Coon and wife Elizabeth Muncy Coon. It is interesting to note that Dennis T. Coon was related to Nettie's husband William McDonald Sterling (second cousin, twice removed). Both families descended from the Coons of Washington County, Rhode Island. The name shortened to Coon from MacCoone. The original ancestor, John MacCoone came to America in 1652 from Aberdeenshire, Scotland. View trascript of Adoption Record.
