    Perry Oliver Everts History
added this on 6 Oct 2009
On April 3rd 1867 Civil War Veteran Perry O. Everts Married Harriet A. Whiting Daughter of Nathan and Harriet Whiting in Van Buren County Michigan. The town of Evart Michigan is named for this man. Perry Oliver Everts (also known as Frank) enlisted in the Union Army July 24 1861 in LaGrange co., Indiana. and fought in the Civil War. He served with The 1st Indiana Heavy Artillery Company “A” as a private and mustered out Jan 13, 1866. After the war he came back to Michigan where he was born in 1843, and purchased 80 acres where the town of “EVART” now stands. At the town’s organizational meeting in 1870, they wanted to name the township for the earliest settler and a Civil War veteran. John Smith was the choice, but Smith was such a common name that he passed to Frank (Perry) Everts as the next settler in the township. Everts’ name was misspelled and that misspelling was allowed to stand. Lumber baron Delos A. Blodgett officially platted the town in 1872, the same year it was officially organized as a village. Evart was a strategic point for sorting timber that was floated down the Muskegon. It was later organized as a city in 1930.
Everts was a farmer and a well liked man by all accounts. Perry and Harriet had 8 children. Perry died in a barn raising accident in his early 40s.
His tombstone in Forest Hill Cemetery in Evart reads:
    Perry O. Everts, 1845-1891. Perry O. Everts age 46 buried Jan. 11. 1891.
In 1975, an Everts' granddaughter, Ruth, who knew Harriet Whiting Everts, visited Evart and brought the portaits of Frank and Harriet to Evart. In the article, she says Harriet died in 1920 at her home (Ruth was 6). Harriet Whiting Everts moved with daughters family to Snohomish, Washington, where she died in 1920, and is buried at the G.A.R. Cemetery.

Hello Whitings, Is this list still active? I am still looking for Nathan Whiting b. Dec 1827 in NY his father was born in New Hampshire I do not know who his parents were and have a hard time trying to match him up with any of the typical Whiting lines I have found. Nathan was married to 1) Harriett Adeline Woods (or Wood) some time around 1846 or 1847 Their first child was Harriett Adeline Whiting They moved to Michigan something before 1850 and the three of them show up in the 1850 Calhoun County Michigan Census. Nathan was a farmer. Nathan and Harriett had 5 or 6 children Van Buren County, MI 1860 Columbia Township Nathan Whiting Head of household age 31 Farmer Born in New York b. 1829 Harriet A. Whiting age 29 "Domestic" Born in New York b.1831 Anson L. age 4 Born in Michigan born 1856 Harriet age 13 Born in New York born 1847 Bernice (Mark) age 2 Born in Michigan born 1858 Van Buren County, MI 1870 Columbia Township Listed in 1870 census with 5 children the census PDF file is un readable Town- Name ship Page WHITING (Columbia Township) Nathan CLT 12 age 43 born 1827 Harriet A. CLT 12 age 41 born 1829 A.S. (Anson) CLT 12 age 13 born 1857 Estella CLT 12 age 9 born 1860 W.P. (William) CLT 12 age 7 born 1863 Clarence CLT 12 age 5 born 1862 Maud (Mark Burns?) CLT 12 age 3 born 1867 And also WHITING Libbie (Female) Born11/05/1868 (but was not listed in the 1870 census) It appears Nathan and Harriett divorced in the mid 1880's. Harriett moved to Snohomish Washington with her Daughter Harriett Adeline Everts On April 6th 1887, Nathan married Effie Hubbard in Montcalm Michigan. Nathan and Effie moved to Skagit, Washington and show up in the 1900 census with youngest son Clarence J. Whiting living with them. I don't know when Nathan died (between 1900 and 1910) and can not find a record of his death in Washington state or Michigan. Their son Clarence Name: Clarence J. Whiting Death date: 20 Aug 1949 Death place: Kirkland, King, Washington In the 1910 Clear Lake, Skagit, Washington Census it lists Effie as a widow, so Nathan had to have died between 1900 and 1910I could use some help with who Nathan's parents from New Hampshire were. Thanks! Hello Scott, There may or may not be a connection here. This is what I came up with using Calhoun Co., MI and the name Anson L. Whiting: I've been researching Jeremiah Bumpus Whiting (Baumpheous, Bompasse?) 1774 - 1850. He was born in Litchfield Co., CT, married in MA, practiced medicine in VT and NY and died in Lee, Calhoun, MI. He settled for several years in the Spafford, NY area. We have found other Whitings in the Spafford/Scott area and think he might have come to NY with other family members. My late cousin's research on Spafford found a Thomas Whiting who came to Spafford in 1811with a wife and 8 children. There was also an Anson L. (Lord) Whiting who was born in Litchfield Co. CT in 1807 and came to Spafford when he was 4 years old. (I think this was from A History of Spafford 1903 by Capt. George Knapp Collins). Perhaps Anson is a family name? There was also mention of a Theophilus Whiting who was born in England and settled in CT. >From other sources, there was a Thomas Whiting (about 1777) of Spafford, NY, son of Theophilus. Thomas is buried in Onondaga Hill Cemetery, and had a son Anson Lord Whiting. The county lines have changed several times, so there may be information in Onondaga, Cayuga and/or Cortland Counties. Hope this is of some help. I'd appreciate more information on Jeremiah B. Whiting. Who were his parents and siblings? (I have some guesses but nothing verified.) He was the first of 3 generations of Jeremiah B. Whitings and I have quite a bit of info on #s 2 and 3.
