Notes from Ellen Baker, Washington State (dab@3-cities.com ) Thomas and Mary and family came to America in 1635. In what ship isstill unclear. Several researcher believes it to be Susan & Ellen buttheir names are not listed on the passenger list. After Mary died in1636? in MA, Thomas would marry again? to #2? Margaret Butler and senthis family back to England so he could be one of the first settlers tosettle Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT by 1639?. (*Note-The firstsettlement was wiped out by Indians in 1637, which killed HughHillard, the first husband of Margaret Hillard Elson.) He would buy upa lot of land and would eventually have his own Island, called "WrightIsland" in the Connecticut River. The Indians called it Mannahannock("Great Laughing Place"). A part of this Island was still owned by thefamily in 1900. It would later sink, though, and does not exist today.Thomas would sit on a Jury in 1643 in 1665?, and 1666. Thomas and Maryhad at least 5 children. (*Note-Researcher Mike Wright tells me there is a dispute if DeaconJoseph Wright is actually the son of Mary Cranbroke. He was supposedlyborn in Kelvedon Hatch, England but there is no record of his birththere. Thus, they think he may have been born at St. Peter's in SouthWeald, England, Thomas' father's home parish. It is thought the reasonthey are in England is that Thomas sent the family back while he wentoff to reclaim the Wethersfield Settlement in CT from the Indians. That is if Mary did indeed die after 1639. If Mary died in 1636 inWatertown, Middlesex Co., MA, then Thomas must have married MargaretButler in 1638 and got married in the wilderness of New England andthe events were never recorded or recorded and got lost. He then senthis family back to England, where Mary had his son Joseph. It is saidshe died in Wethersfield, Hartford Co., CT in 1645. By all accounts,Thomas indeed marry again to twice widow Margaret Hillard Elson in1647.)*(Note- Thomas married again to wife # 3? twice widow MargaretHillard Elson on May 2, 1647 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co, CT. Theyhad no children together but she had children from her first marriageto Hugh Hilliard and she did make a Will that mentions her Hillardgrandchildren. When her son Benjamin Hilliard got into a legal troublein 1648/9, Thomas stood by him in court like a father figure)
