The following is taken from the Fond du Lac Portrait and BiographicalAlbum, copyright, 1889.

ETHAN ELLIS WHITING, an intellegent and enterprising citizen of the townof Waupun, who is now engaged in farming and stock-raising on section 10,is a native of the Empire State. He was born in Erie County on the 25thof January, 1845, and is a son of Warren and Lorinda (Keith) Whiting. When he was a babe of two years, his parents left their Eastern home and emigrated to the Territory of Wisconsin, locating in Fond du Lac County. His boyhood days were spent in much the same manner as those of other farmer lads, and he was reared to manhood under the parental roof. In the common schools of the county he acquired his primary education, which he completed at Hillsdale College, Michigan, pursuing his studies duringthe winter term, while in the summer months he assisted in the labors ofthe farm.

On ariving at years of maturity, Mr. Whiting chose for himself a helpmate in the person of Miss Julia Towne, and on the 23rd of October, 1867, their marriage was celebrated. The lady was a native of Catttarugus County, N. Y. , born Feb. 11, 1842, and four children, one son and three daughters, graced their union: They are Walter F., Wilhelmina, Nellia W.and Ida C., all of whom are yet at home. In 1879 Mr. Whiting was calledupon to mourn the loss of his wife, a most estimable lady, and a memberof the Free-will Baptist Church, who died on the 26th of June of that year. On the 17th of November, 1880, he was again married, his second union being with Miss Ella F. Grennell, who was born in this county July20, 1856. They have two interesting children, Ethel M. and Arthur E.

At the time of his first marriage, Mr. Whiting located upon the farmwhere he still makes his home. It comprises 181 acres of land, which hehas placed under a high state of cultivation. Diligence and industry arenumbered among his chief characteristics and he labors assiduously in theinterest of his home and family. In connection with general farming, heengages quite extensively in stock-raising and also owns and operates adairy. He has been very successful in that line of business and welldeserves a liberal share of the public patronage. Religously, Mr.Whiting is a member of the Free-will Baptist Chruch, while his wife is acommunicant of the Congregational Church. They hold a high position inthe social world and are greatly esteemed by those who know them fortheir upright lives. In political sentiment, Mr. Whiting is an advocateof the principles of the Republican Party, and as ever true Americancitizen should do, feels an interest in political affairs. He has, however, never sought or desired public office, preferring to devote hisentire time and attention his business interests. He has witnessedalmost the entire growth of Fond du Lac County, and is a worthy andvalued citizen.
