JOHN HOWARD WHITING LAID TO REST IN PROVO
The funeral of John Howard Whiting was held at the residence Tuesday afternoon under the direction of Rev W F Ballery of the Espiscopal Church. Mr. Whiting
was born in Minnesota in 1867 and followed the grain business for more than 30 years. He came here last December for the benefit of his health and died May 4.
He leaves a wife and 5 children all of whom live here except Leonard who lives in Minnesota. The speakers were W P Bulkely, Rev E Y Kuhne and Bishop Jos A Battie.
The music was under the direction of W P Whitehead and Mrs I H Master and Murray K Roberts sang.

His brothers Almond, Sylvester, Chauncey, and Lewis and his sister Louisa, did not feel that Brigham Young should be the leader of the church so they followed a Mr. Alpheus Cutler and called themselves “Cutlerites” and moved up into Clitheral, Minnesota. To this day, they hold tenaciously to the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith. They still correspond with the children of Edwin Whiting, and have given us, for temple work, an extensive genealogy of the Whiting family.

Postscript
While this book was in the final stages of publication, the author learned that Sylvester Whiting, son of Elisha Whiting, Jr., was first married to Elizabeth Brunnell. According to their descendents, Sylvester and Elizabeth were endowed in the Nauvoo Temple 7 January 1846. Their son, Sylvester Whiting, Jr. was born at Mt. Pisgah, 29 August 1848. Later Sylvester, Sr. left his family and joined an apostate Mormon sect. Elizabetrh and her son went to Utah, reportedly arriving in 1854. Elizabeth then married William Gribble. More information on Sylvester, can be found in thie book, pages 95 and 100.

Rebecca (daughter of Redfield, William and Scott, Mary Ann) was born on 8 Aug 1835 in Clitherall, Otter Tail, Minnesota; died on 29 Dec 1908 in Clitherall, Otter Tail, Minnesota; was buried in Clitherall, Otter Tail, Minnesota.
