    Obituary of Alexander Slattery:

    FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH

Alexander Slattery, who lost his life in the fire in the Dinnie block a few days ago, died in the performance of his duty, and those who knew him best say that the manner of his death was in keeping with his entire life, in which duty had always held first place. For years he had been in charge of the building, and to the safety and comfort of it's occupants and the security of their property he had devoted his entire time and energy. When danger threatened he sought to avert it, and in the performance of that work he did not hesitate to incur the risk which ended his own life.
Mr. Slattery was one of the rapidly diminishing group of pioneers who came to Grand Forks with the first river craft, who established themselves permanently here and became part and parcel of the little community out of which was to develop the modern city. In education, in social advantages, and in the possession of material wealth, these men differed widely, but they had one thing in common, the spirit of courage which led them into the new and unknown, and which sustained them through the varied experiences of pioneer life.
These men differed in their subsequent careers as widely as in the conditions which surrounded their early life. Some of them became known as the managers of large business enterprises. In the course of years some of them retired in affluence. Alexander Slattery filled his own little niche in the city's life, Quiet and unobtrusive, without wealth or important station, but known to his acquaintances as a man of sterling character, honest and honerable, unfaltering in the fulfillment of every obligation - faithful unto death.
