    Notes:

George Thomas Waterman was known by his middle name, Thomas, which was shortened to 'Tom'. He was probably named after his uncle Thomas, who was his mother's brother. This unmarried uncle usually lived with his parents and the two families always lived fairly close to each other--never more than just two or three miles apart in England.
Emigration records show that 'Tom' age 7 (actual age was 11), traveled with his older brother William, listed as age 11 (actual age was 17), and returning LDS missionaries to the USA. They left Liverpool, England in a company of 120 people aboard the ship 'Dakota' on 14, October 1875. Part of their passage money was paid by their maternal grandfather, Benjamin Miller, who was 82 years old at the time and because of 'in-firmed due to age' had to remain in England. They arrived in New York on 26 October, 12 days later. They arrived in Utah on the 3rd of November.
Until his mother and younger brother, Lemuel, immigrated to the United States two years later, Tom and his brother, William, lived with and worked for one of the missionaries they traveled with from England. By 1878 his father and older sister, Flora, also immigrated. The 1880 Census of Spanish Fork, Utah Territory shows that the parents and the three youngest children were living together. Tom was 15 years old and was a 'laborer'.
He received his naturalization citizenship 7 September, 1894; he was 30 years old and had been married for 7 years.
At the time of the 1900 US Census he, his wife, and children were living in Mapleton, Utah; he was listed as a 'farmer and construction worker'; he owned his own home without a mortgage; could read and write, had immigrated to the USA in 1876, and had been married for 13 years.
By the time of the 1910 US Census of Desert Lake, Emery, Utah, his wife had died, he was 44 years old, and he was living with six of his eight children: Clifford 21, George 16, Ella 14, Ruth 11, Cecil 8, and Arthur 6. Also living in the home was a housekeeper, Lottly Christensen 27, and her two children, Elsie 11, and Leroy 6. Because his construction work kept him away from home, he sent money home to the housekeeper. It was learned later that she had 'pocketed' most of the money, causing the growing family to live on meager means.
About 1913 Tom took George, the second oldest son to Susanville, California to work on the construction of a railroad. He also farmed there and his oldest married daughter, Elsie and her husband and young family went there for a year or so to help him. George returned home after about a year to his siblings in Utah. Else and her family returned to Salt Lake City, Utah. Tom, however, stayed and worked in California and Nevada. He did not return home for about 21 years.
The 1920 US Census of Hazen, Nevada shows that he was living there with his second wife, Anna, and her three children: Cleo 13, May 7, and Delwin 5. All three children adopted the 'Waterman' name. Tom was married,'head of house', rented their home, and was doing 'construction' work. Four years later, that small family moved to Grand Forks, Canada. That was Tom's home for the following 13 years. He made no contact with the family he had left in Utah.
Canadian Border Crossing Records show that Tom, his wife and three children left Lovelock, Nevada by railroad and moved to Grand Forks, British Columbia. They were admitted to Canada 27 May 1921. His occupation was listed as a 'farmer'. That same year the 1921 Census of Canada Grand Forks, British Columbia indicates that the family lives on Wellington Ave, owns their home which is made of 'wood', and has 9 rooms. They are 'Christian' and Tom is a 'Farmer'. They went to Canada in 1921.
Ten years later, In September of 1931 his wife, Addie, and the two youngest children left Canada and returned to Idaho. The oldest girl, Cleo, had left years earlier because she could not 'get along' with her mother.
In 1931 at the age of 66 a Border Crossing document described Tom as being "of medium complexion, 5 foot 6 inches tall, with brown eyes, and bald'.
In 1933 Tom was living alone in Canada. He and his wife were presumably divorced. His adopted son, who was living in Albion, Idaho and a Utah granddaughter, who was visiting in Idaho, met by chance at a dance in Burley, Idaho. Thereafter, his adopted daughter encouraged him to contact his Utah family, which he finally did via a letter. Consequently, within months and with the financial aid of his Utah children he was able to return home to Utah. Border Crossing Records show that he left Canada 10 February 1934 in care of his son George to return to Price, Utah. He was 69 years old and 'single'. He had lived in Canada for 13 years. He had been away from Utah for at least 21 years!
Throughout the years his children had unsuccessfully been looking for him. The reunion with his family was happy.Tom lived with various children in the Price area for the remaining 18 months of his life. According to his death certificate he died December 18, 1935 at 4:00am in the hospital in Price, Utah due to 'Acute Myocarditis' of eight days duration. He was buried December 22 in Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, Utah.

During a telephone conversation with the sexton at Evergreen Cemetery in Springville, it was learned that 8 plots had been purchased, and that 6 were in use. Cemetery records did not show the burial of George Thomas. However a subsequent conversation with Laura Redenbaugh Jarboe, grandaughter, verified that she was present at the burial and that he is indeed buried next to his wife. She further stated that she, Laura, and her brother, Russell Redenbaugh, later purchased perpetual care. She related that the children of George Thomas jointly purchased the 'WATERMAN' marker. For years there had been individual metal markers at each grave which had been eventually discarded. As of this time, (2002) one plot remains unused.
