Notes:

Thomas Kimberly, the first of that name to come to America, was baptized at Wotten-Sub-Edge, County Gloucester, England, June 24, 1604. He was the son of Abraham Kimberley and Katherine Howe, who were married there Oct. 4, 1602. It is not known just when Thomas Kimberly came to America, but he was one of the founds of New Haven, Conn., in 1638. He was chosen corporal of the Train Band (Military Company) in August 1642, and clerk for the Military Company in April, 1655. He was Marshall of the New Haven Colony 1643-1661. Later he moved to Stratford, Conn. He married Alice Awood [other sources say Atwood], who died Oct. 10, 1659. One of their children was Abraham Kimberly.

There is no record of the date of the birth or marriage of Abraham. It is known that his wife’s name was Hannah. Her last name may have been Preston, but this is not absolutely certain. Abraham Kimberly and his family moved to Chowan County, North Carolina by 1668. He died there sometime prior to March 27, 1680, when administration was granted on his estate. Abraham’s widow returned to Connecticut with the three surviving children, whose births were entered in the Stratford, Conn., records. One of the children was Abraham Jr., who eventually became the chief heir of his grandfather, Thomas Kimberly.

This Abraham lived in Stratford until 1711, when he became an original proprietor of Newtown, Conn., which was incorporated as a town in 1711. Abraham Kimberly Jr. married Abigail Fitch, the daughter of Thomas Fitch and Abigail Goodrich. Their daughter, Hannah Kimberly, born January 19, 1698, married James hard Jr. Abraham Kimberly died prior to July 26, 1727, when administration was granted on his estate.

Thomas lived in Wethersfield, CT. He was a constable in Dec 1679 before his marriage to Abigail. After Abigail's death in 1684, daughter Abigail went to live with her maternal grandparents. Thomas married Sarah Bordman and had several more children; they resided on the east side of Broad St. between ch. and Fletcher's Lane. Thomas was a schoolteacher in 1699 and a leather-sealer in 1702.

Sarah Boardman (q.v. Boreman), dau. of Samuel Boreman and Mary Betts, b. of record Mar. 4, 1654/5 at Wethersfield, Conn. She was living at Wethersfield on Apr. 9, 1717 when the estate of her deceased husband was distributed to her, to her step-dau Abigail (Fitch) Kimberly, and her own children son Samuel and Sibell (Fitch) Hurlbut.

On an unrecorded date after Nov. 1684 probably at Wethersfield, Sarah m. as his 2nd wife, Thomas Fitch, s. of Samuel Fitch and Susanna Wiggin, latter the former wife of Maj. William Whiting of Hartford, Conn. Thomas was b. circa 1653 probably at Hartford and d. intestate Oct. 18, 1704 at Wethersfield, Æ 52.

Thomas Fitch m. 1) of record Sept. 15, 1680 at Wethersfield, Abigail Goodrich, dau. of Ens. William Goodrich and Sarah Marvin, b. at Wethersfield June 5, 1662. Abigail d. of record Nov. 8, 1684 at Wethersfield, Æ 23. They had the following three children at Wethersfield:

• i. Thomas Fitch, Jr. b. July 20, 1681; died in infancy.

• ii. Abigail Fitch, b. circa 1682, was living at Newtown, Conn. in 1728 when her husband's estate was probated; m. of record May 11, 1696 at Stratford, Conn., Abraham Kimberly, Jr., b. Mar. 4, 1674/5 at Albemarle County, in modern South Carolina. Nine children of the family. Stiles' 1902 "Ancient Wethersfield" followed by later writers assigned Abigail as the dau. of her father's 2nd wife Sarah Fitch, an obvious error. If the latter were true, that Thomas Fitch's 1st wife d. of record in Nov. 1684 would mean that dau. Abigail could not have been born prior to late 1685, then marrying Abraham Kimberly of record in 1696 when barely 11 years of age. That Abigail (Fitch) Kimberly was a very young bride is also obvious, but not at age 11.

• iii. Sibell Fitch, b. Nov. 2, 1684, d. in infancy Dec. 18, 1684.

Sarah Boardman and Thomas Fitch had the following three children at Wethersfield:

• i. Sibell Fitch, b. circa 1686 assuming she was 18 years of age when she married, d. at Newington, Conn. before Nov. 30, 1747; m. Apr. 27, 1704 at Wethersfield (by James Treat, JP), Joseph Hurlbut, s. of Stephen and Phebe Hurlbut, b. July 10, 1683 at Wethersfield. He d. at Newington, Conn. June 24, 1752, Æ 69 (g.s.) Ten children of the family.

• ii. Samuel Fitch, whose birth is not of record; was living on Sept. 7, 1713 as a minor (under age 21) when William Whiting of Hartford was appointed his guardian. He was living Apr. 9, 1717 when included in the distribution of his father's estate, but no further record has been found regarding him.

• iii. Martha Fitch, b. prior to 1694 assuming she was at least of age (18) at death, d. of record at Wethersfield Feb. 2, 1712/3. Her estate was inventoried Sept. 3, 1713 with administration of Martha, "a single woman," granted Sept. 7, 1713 to her mother, Sarah Fitch.
