    ===================================
    Taken from the newspaper Sunday Commerical, Port Huron, Michigan. October 19, 1885. William Whiting of this city had the body of his father, Peter H. Whiting, who died at Romeo 6 years ago taken up and brought to this city and interred in lakeside cemetery. ----------------------------------- Peter was born at Claverack, Columbia County. N.Y. Resided there until 25 years of age. Went from there to Venice, Ohio and from there to Michigan in the year 1818. Was one of the early pioneers on the Black River St. Clair County in 1823. Was married Nov. 6th. 1825 to Miss Margaret Champion(Monica Champagne) of Detroit. Their wedding journey was by sail boat from Detroit to Port Huron, then 5 miles up along the Black River on an ox sled in June, the only other mode of travel was by indian canoe. He died at Ray Mccomb County, Michigan, March 29th. 1880, aged 90 years 2 months and 6 days. Both are buried at Port Huron, Michigan. "The above information obtained from Helen Whiting of Port Huron, MIchigan." ------------------------------ Information furnished by Robert W. Knight, Mt. Clemens, MI., Peter H. Whiting was born in Claverack, Columbia Co., N.Y. Jan. 1, 1791, the son of Job Whiting who was in the U.S. Census there in 1790 and who removed soon thereafter to Blenheim Twp., Schoharie Co., N.Y. before 1800. In 1815 he and (by tradition) two or three brothers removed to Venice, Ohio (now a part of sandusky). One of the brothers is said to have settled in the Cleveland, Ohio area and the others went west. Peter came to St. Clair Co., Michigan in 1818 where we first find him in published records as one of 33 signers of a petition to Congress by inhabitants of St. Clair Co., Territory of Michigan, dated Mar. 18, 1822, requesting that a law be enacted to provide for a circuit court to be established in each county. On May 31, 1825 he was a voter at an election held in Cottrellville, St. Clair co. and, by early arrival at the polls, was elected and inspector of the election and was one of those who certified the results of the election which was for a Delegate to the U.S. Congress and for members of the Legislative Council. (The Territorial Papers of the U.S., Vol. XI, The Territory of Michiagn, pages 230, 892, 893 and 913.) In "The Territorial Papers of the United States", Vol. II The Territory of Michigan, it is noted that he was a signer of petitions to Congress: p.441 - Feb. 13, 1832, citing the need of a military road to be built across Mich. Territory from Fort Gratiot on Lake Huron to the mouth of the Grand River on Lake Michigan to open the land for settlement. p.725 - feb. 4, 1834, for a road from Fort Gratiot through Lapeer to Grand River and there connecting with the Detroit-Chicago road. The name of his mother is unknown but is thought to have been Dutch. His son, George Whiting, was born Aug. 19, 1833 at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse. It is unknown if any of his other children were born there. Peter Whiting is recorded as a settler in Section 29, Burtchville twp., St. Clair Co., in 1840. In the 1850 U.S. Census, Peter Whiting is recorded as a innkeeper in Port Huron twp., St. Clair Co. This is before he last removed to Lakeport in Burtchville twp. where he as recorded as a farmer in the 1860 Census. In the 1870 U.S. Census, Monroe County, he is recorded as being in the household of John L. Simmons and his daughter Mary, Monica is not mentioned in that household, he may have just been visiting. He also shows up in the Huron County census that same year with his wife. The Monroe and Huron County census`s were not taken during the same month. He died before the 1880 census in Ray twp., Macomb Co., Mich., at the home of his son Geroge, March 29, 1880 -------------------------------------- Information furnished by Angie Wesch, librarian in St. Clair Co. Port Huron, MI. to Susan Severson by e-mail. Paper copy in correspondence book under Whiting. The only information I found about Peter was as P. H. Whiting being a Justice of the Peace (in the year 1844) in Burtchville Twp. There are other Whitings mentioned. I believe these Whitings came later and came from Steuben Co. NY. These are the books I checked: The history of St. Clair County, MI. Chicago: A.T. Andreas & Co., 1883. Jenks, William Lee. St. Clair County, MI. its history and its people a narrative account of its historical progress and its principle interests. Chicago. Lewis Publishing Co., 1912. ------------------------------------------- This information obtained from Helen Whiting, in telephone conversation with Ron Quayle on Sept. 23, 1997. Helen Whiting in talking to her husband`s father Kenneth Whiting, and George Whiting of Washington, Michigan in about 1983, he was in his early 80`s at the time, was told that four Whiting brother`s came west from New York to Cleveland, Ohio. One stayed in Cleveland and three went to Michigan, one went to Detroit and married a French girl from Quebec, probably Peter H. Whiting. The other two moved around Michigan`s Lake shoreline, one settling in Whiting, Indiana and the other moving to Whiting, Iowa. It seems these towns were named after these Whiting boys. ---------------------------------------- Found in a book at the Minnesota Historical Society. The Michigan State censuses 1710-1820. Section for 1820, Peter H. Whiting in Desmond Township. Also in the 1830 Federal and Michigan territory census found Peter H. Whiting Township of Desmond. age 0-5 5-10 10-15 15-20 20-30 males 0 0 0 1 6 females 2 0 0 1 1 Possible names of persons in household: 1- male 15-20 years old - unknown, but could have been one of Monica`s brother`s Antoine who was 19, or Hubert who was 17. 6 - males 20-30 years old - One could have been Peter, but not right age group unless he was Peter b. 1800. Other five unknown. 2 - females under 5 years old - Mary and Emily, there daughters 1 - female 15-20 years old - unknown. 1 - female 20-30 years old - Margaret (Monica Champagne) Whiting.
